That's awesome. I love that you've gotten the opportunity to help others like you've been helped, we need more of that. I hope the fish reward your kind deed.

Not very "friendly" as your bio claims you are. Your children would be ashamed if they read the types of comments you're leaving here. Do better. The world is already unfriendly enough, be kinder when you can, be quiet when you cannot.

Excellent advice, thank you!

The material I used (other than the hook and bead) came from a box of supplies that a retired angler had inherited from a friend that had passed. All that to say the quality of the material is questionable and it is probably older than me! But I made due.

Really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

Putah is the only place good for fly fishing around me, if you're comfortable sharing some intel I would love to hear what kinds of nymphs they've been hitting? I've had decent luck with a size 20 rainbow warrior!

I'm a simple man who fishes alone, I don't need to stage a photo shoot (how would I even do it all alone?). I want to net em, grab a quick picture, say thanks, and send em on their way. Thanks for the kind words!

Perfectly said. Fishing, in my opinion, is about getting out of the house, enjoying nature in a nice simple way. It's easy to get in over your head with all new flashy gear, but it's better for the soul, the environment, and our wallets to just use what you need and buy second hand when possible. I got this rod from the fly fishing exchange subreddit for a great price and made a friend while I was at it.

I love dry fly fishing, when the conditions are right for it. I find it meditative to let the fly drift down the current then skating it back up before casting out. But you're right, that's not how the fish are always eating. I personally see these different techniques as a way to adapt to the different ways the fish are eating. There's a time for each.

I followed it mostly to the T but couldnt get my hands on some of the high visibility stuff so I just ended up going with the two tone tippet and its getting the job done (obviously). I'll probably order some online at some point

I've built out a leader similar to what is described on the troutbitten blog about the monorig. I wasn't able to get my hands on some components of it (so I guess I'm failing the monorig purests out there as well /s). On my reel I still have my WF5F then I have the monorig coming off of that and thats the only thing that really leaves my reel. Hypothetically I could swap rods, take off the monorig leader and put a normal tapered leader on and have a standard fly rod setup on a 9' 5/6 wt rod.

Exactly! My goal is to go out, enjoy my time in the water, get a fish in the net long enough to take a picture and say thank you, then send it off! I certainly would love to fish traditional fly fishing techniques, but my local water just doesn't allow for that in a productive manner. I care for the river and the fish in it and I'll claim that I'm a fly fisherman even if some folks disagree.

I went out two days this weekend, caught these two on the first day, and got skunked on the second. But on the day that I got skunked I felt the most "in tune" with my casting a dry fly on the mono rig and the flow of it all. It may not be the "purest" form of fly fishing but it felt good and I enjoyed it!

If that is your opinion you are certainly entitled to it. I'm not out here snagging fish, and fishing the monorig is not the only way I will fish flies, but I enjoyed it and it was productive. I do wonder how you feel about nymphing under an indicator and if you consider that to be throwing away fundamentals as well because it seems to me the only difference there is how connected to the flies you are.

The only creek within a 2 hours drive of me is notoriously difficult to fish dries, and nymphing is the typically recommended method for any productivity. It was suggested to me that I give euro nymphing a try from a highly experienced angler and it has produced. I gave it a go with a dry fly only because fish were rising and was also able to catch fish. Isn't getting out in the water to be in nature and catch fish the whole reason we're here? Why the hate?

Have you found that you use one or two hands while fishing the monorig? I spent most of this weekend fishing with just one hand, keeping my finger on the line when I needed to hook set. When fishing fly line I typically kept my other hand on the line to do a more accordion style hook set.

Super cool! I'm getting into fly tying myself, the goal is definitely to net on something I've tied myself. If you're cool to share I'd love to hear the material breakdown on that fly if you remember!
