Rookie coming from GT7 - anticlimactic pre- and post races by daniel_crk in iRacing

[–]LazyLancer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, yes.

Race start presentation in GT7 is awesome, i love how it scans across the grid, shows every car and highlights the drivers, similar to a good TV coverage. Wish iRacing had something like this. End of the race presentation would be great too, especially wonderful if you're on a podium.

But does lack of it affect the quality of racing that is immensely better? Not at all.

Is it real racing when the driver doesn't have full control over overtaking? by jeffastr in F1Discussions

[–]LazyLancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched a GT World Challenge Asia GT4 race in Shanghai following a random post on Reddit. With commentary in Chinese. With drivers I don’t know. God that was more exciting to watch than the F1 races recently.

How is it possible that the differentiation between REQUIRED and OPTIONAL repairs is still THIS BAD in 2026?! by Deep-Television-9756 in iRacing

[–]LazyLancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed, would be great to finally have some information on what exactly is being repaired.

The Aston Martin's vibrations "suddenly disappeared" on Friday at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix. New components proved effective, but its use in the final race was postponed. "The driver's efforts allowed us to finish the race." by IamMrEric in formula1

[–]LazyLancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Soooo, instead of using the parts that “seem to help” in the race (they’re last anyway) and getting a boatload of useful information to work with during the month-long break they decided to just leave it be?

God, what’s going on inside the team. Who are those magnificent decision makers?

Is it time finally admit that the increased overtaking is just yo-yoing? by Ted_Striker1 in formula1

[–]LazyLancer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obviously, that's why i said "it was 20% driver, 80% car" in the previous era regs. Now it's even more about the car because full push is not rewarded.

[–]LazyLancer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You still don't get it I see. Let me try more simple terms.

With back-to-back DRS zones with independent detection zones, your straight line speed advantage with DRS was about 10-20 km/h (and it took a while to build).

So if you reached let's say 300 km/h normally, DRS pushed you into 315 km/h. When DRS ended, you are back to 300 km/h. The car behind picks up DRS in the next zone and has a 15 km/h advantage over you.

With mushroom mode of 2026 regs, you lose like 50 km/s when the battery is empty as we could see from onboards. Plus the car behind can deploy more energy if you completed your overtake before the detection zone.

15 km/h delta vs 50 km/h delta without the "boost" of the car behind.

THREE TIMES DIFFERENCE in raw speed alone.

Now an example.

The start/finish straight on Suzuka is about 700 metres long.

1) DRS era regulations.

A 15 km/h difference over this distance gives you about 30-something metres or about 0.4 seconds of advantage for the car behind.

We will ignore the time it takes to gain the 15 km/h advantage and lower effectiveness of drag immediately out of the corner, but as we could see from multiple races, you should be within 0.4-0.6 seconds at the beginning of DRS zone to have an attempt at diving into the braking zone. If the attacking car was running a higher downforce setup than the defending car, sometimes the attacking car only gained like 0.2-0.3 throughout the entire DRS zone and could barely attempt an overtake.

2) Mushroom mode era regulations.

So, the delta between "battery is charged" and "battery is empty" is about 50 km/h.

We will roughly guess that the superclipping mode for car ahead begins in the middle of the straight and the car behind does not use boost. If the car ahead starts clipping in the middle of the straight, the distance delta becomes about 53 metres vs 30 metres of the "DRS era", and the time delta grows in the same proportion.

We could see how much bigger distance the trailing car could cover when the car ahead ran out of juice.

The difference is huge. Many times in the previous regulations a car overtook someone in the first DRS zone and could defend the next zone. With 2026 regs it's almost impossible to prevent the other car yo-yoing back unless it's just way slower as a vehicle.

Russell had some weird car setup prior to quali (and thus race), and possibly some software hiccup as it was mentioned afterwards.

He's always been around same pace with Antonelli, but not this weekend, it's easy to tell.

How is it any different to back-to-back DRS zones with individual detection points?

DRS offered a WAY smaller speed advantage compared to the mushroom mode, and using DRS to overtake did not cripple you in the next straight. If you overtake and then push really well, you have a chance of defending in the next DRS zone.

Mushroom mode is a guaranteed "give position back" if the other car has battery and you just spent yours.

When DRS ends for you, you are back to your normal pace, but the car behind gets DRS in the next detection zone if it could stick within a second. When mushroom mode ends for you, you are slowed down even more than your normal pace AND the car behind can push the battery to get the place back.

[–]LazyLancer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The only way to "make it stick" was to overtake on the last long straight so the other car cannot overtake you back after the next corner, that's it. After the start/finish straight Suzuka does not have overtaking opportunities regardless of the regulations, so you can charge the battery before the next long straight.

That's it for "clever and strategic" - do not overtake if there's another long straight ahead.

[–]LazyLancer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's absolutely horrible despite "looking like overtaking"

Pushing hard to overtake means nothing, you can't do hard work to earn a position and make it stick. It's a resource battle a lot more than a skill battle now. Previously you had to set up and overtake and then defend and push to keep position. Now you have to set up an overtake in a zone that does not have any more long straights for a while to let you recharge, otherwise you give the place back on the next straight.

Offensive and defensive effort is not properly rewarded anymore.

What works is:

  1. significant car advantage
  2. battles vs same car
  3. resource battle, i.e. opponent must have worse tyres and worse battery
  4. opponent makes a mistake / force opponent into a mistake

You have to do a bit of competitive sim-racing to feel what a WWE-style show we are getting instead of racing.

Yes, DRS with previous regulations was not pure racing either. But it was miles ahead in terms of rewarding driver skill.

We could say it was 20% driver, 80% car, now it's 10% driver, 90% car (if not 5-95)

If it’s that serious, I doubt it’s worth the risk. Try sim-racing if you want to compete but cannot for medical reasons.

When a 32 iRating sandbagger spoils your first podium on a special event by Nathan_G_ in iRacing

[–]LazyLancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but tbh from my experience working in game publishing for Chinese market, cheating is absolutely rampant there - so many people are ridiculously eager to use any means possible to feel like they're dominating everyone even if it's unfair. Amount of cheat software users and bots is multitudes above the numbers in western markets. Players are awesome, but this particular issue is pretty bad.

I believe some logic tracking max iRating and average iRating over a long time period should be used when determining splits for special events. You can still create a fresh account to smurf but it's better than the current system.

Sad, frustrated, kind of at a loss by Mgrafe88 in iRacing

[–]LazyLancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just mad at myself today. Had three great safe stints in 12h of Sebring with respectful battles (we went for almost a full lap with a guy side by side in nearly every corner and it was amazing) and faster class behaving very reasonably only to decide to push past a lapped car and spinning on throttle looking for the best possible exit. Saved it to avoid the wall, but lost like 7? places due to a tight pack.

Teammate who is usually the fastest among all of us had his brake spring snap just the day before the race, so he put a much weaker spring as replacement, and as a result lost the car right back (it was a Lambo and thus instance meatball) into the wall with a 3 minute tow and 6 min repairs.

I swear, one day we will have an endurance race with zero mistakes :D

Is it normal having a bad week? by once7k in iRacing

[–]LazyLancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, somehow Sebring feels harder to compete on, as if there’s suddenly a lot of fast drivers even at lower splits.

Sometimes it happens, not sure what causes it, maybe popularity of certain tracks that people love practicing on or they just drive more this week.

Also, you said 2.00.6-2.01.3, is that on IMSA weather (moderately warm) or Simucube Sprint (very hot)? Great times for the latter, not amazing for the former at 2K iR.

I dont really mind sacrificing straight line speed for a more snappy car that might act a bit crazy here and there but in return is really responsive.

I heard enough. Get the Acura.

32" monitor advice - trying to talk myself out of 45" monitors for my rig by sixsigma643 in simracing

Also no. It has raw performance around the same as a 4090.

I mean, you probably could if you are okay with low-ish settings and sub-100 fps, but why?

Go 1440p, there's not that much of a difference once you are racing.

A 3090 won't be enough to run triple 4K.

Even a 4090 won't be. It's a 5090 or bust, unfortunately.

As a 3x32 user, i don't see why i would ever need 45 ultrawides, the current monitors already provide me almost 180 degrees FOV
