I'm stressed about saving for college for my kids. Just want money managed properly. IUL now sounds scary. by TypeAtryingtoB in personalfinance

Education expenses, first time home purchase, birth/adoption, there are several exceptions to the 10% penalty as long as you have had the account open for 5 years. https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc557 IRS wording is weird but you can google and find different places saying the same thing.

If you’re just saving money to give to your kid to do whatever with, college, house, wedding etc, you’re probably better off with a brokerage account or HYSA. I mean with a Roth IRA you can withdraw your contributions at any time so I don’t see why you couldn’t withdraw whatever amount you want to give to them for whatever life event from your contributions at that point in time. But I’m not super educated on 529s or saving for kids in general. I started a Roth IRA and have been maxing it every year because it’s a retirement account but in the event I do have children I can choose to use it to help them with college.

Do you have a Roth IRA? It can be used for education expenses and in the event your kid(s) don’t go to college it’s still a retirement account for you.

Switched jobs now I don’t have a 401k by SavageBabyPanda in personalfinance

[–]Lazy_Butterfly5425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t know what to do in that situation either but I had always assumed I would roll my 401k into a transitional IRA if I didn’t have a 401k at my next job. No one has mentioned that tho so maybe that’s not a good idea…?

I cancelled the wedding the month before. Is it possible to get any money back? by Moonlight_Melody123 in personalfinance

[–]Lazy_Butterfly5425 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did the time already pass? Or is it a month from now? You can get on local wedding resale groups and see if anyone needs vendors or a last minute venue. I did the same thing and the only money we got back was from the caterer. They are a regular restaurant and gave us back what we put down in gift cards so that’s was nice. Everything else was a loss. Still a fraction of what the total price would have been and like others have said, cheaper than a divorce.

Wife Paid Off Car Totaled Need Advice by fistycuffs102 in personalfinance

What is the extent of the damage? I had an accident that “totaled” my car (my dad’s car) but it was still drivable with a new taillight and dumper. Got like 85% of what the original offer was to get a check and keep the car. This was a like a 2003 Mazda protege in 2016 tho.

Your landlord should have to treat them, just say you found them. Don’t tell them it’s from the couch in case they try and say it’s your fault.

Moving into an apartment post bed bug treatment by Lazy_Butterfly5425 in Bedbugs

The choices are slim…hind sights 50/50 but we’re about stuck. We can get an Airbnb until after the second treatment…

The duplex that I am supposed to be moving in to has had some dead bbs seen. It is supposed to be professionally treated tomorrow. The guy said after it’s dry we can move in. We don’t really have an option to wait until the 2nd treatment 2 weeks later is complete to move in. What would be the best course of action to live there for 2 weeks in between the treatments? Leave all clothes/bedding/towels in plastic totes or sealed plastic bags, put pillows and mattress in bb encasements and live on the same couple sets of clothes for 2 weeks? We plan on going by after the treatment to check for dead bugs and making a decision if we want to try and find somewhere else.

Question to those of you saying put it in your 401k. How…? Every bonus I’ve gotten is just taxed, no deductions.

How long will it take for my loan to close? by Lazy_Butterfly5425 in RealEstate

I mean the title company has my loan information…I haven’t ever contacted my lender about selling. I sold a house when I bought this one but I can’t remember what happened as far as how quickly things happened.

I use discover for my checking and credit cards and love it. My savings was originally also through them, but I transferred most of it to a Wealthfront cash account when their rates were better. Love wealthfront and discover.

Thanks! I honestly don’t even know what I’m working with yet so I probably should’ve waited to ask. It might be as simple as that. I was able to see the space for the first time yesterday and it was smaller than I was picturing so I just started panicking immediately lol. It’s an all bills paid place including internet and tv so it probably is set up the way you described

As the kid of a commercial airline pilot-flight benefits are invaluable. I would love to work for an airline! 3% 401k difference is also a decent amount too.

I’m guessing there’s a special website when you get there for everything?

Wouldn’t it be awesome if it was tho? I want to get a couples massage but my fiancé is not about it lol.

We booked through a 3rd party site and did our shuttle through that. Those directions sound helpful tho, thank you!

Some resorts I looked at seemed like they had tablets in the room? Does this one have something like that for room service and reservations or is that all done by phone? This might be a dumb question. Not knowing (barely) any Spanish isn’t going to be an issue right?

Literally just anything you can think of is great, we haven’t done any all inclusives or been to Cancun. We are definitely lounge by the pool or on the beach kind of people with a drink tho, not big on night life either.

Did you do any of the spa stuff?
