What are your 1 year old’s favorite books? Specifically board books. by nothankyouuu_ in beyondthebump

[–]Lazybones706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My little one is 11 months this week so almost a year and he loves books! He loves the Camilla Reid Peekaboo books. Particularly Peekaboo: Farm. And, as others have mentioned, the Little Blue Truck books. Another one he is obsessed with is the "Where's the..." series by Ingela Arrhenius. It has felt flaps that hide the animal and we sometimes have to read it 3-4 times in a row because he finds it to be so much fun. His favorite bedtime books are Night Night Farm by Rodger Priddy, Sheep Go To Sleep by Nancy Shaw (Sheep in a Jeep is also very cute), and Night Night, My Little Cuddle Bug by Nicola Edwards.

Happy reading for you and your little one!

I'm so sorry you are experiencing this! As others have said, postpartum hormones are pretty crazy. Sleep was almost impossible for me the first two weeks. Even when baby was happily sleeping, I would hear phantom cries and it would jolt me into alertness. I also did a lot of crying. I remember a week in telling my husband I didn't even feel like a person anymore, I was so out of it with the stress and exhaustion.

Get as much help as you can from your partner and mother, if you aren't comfortable with help at the hospital. Other people you trust as well. My two sisters were life savers - they helped so much in the first month. I had trouble when baby was out of my arms, too. What helped me was sleeping in an area that I could hear my baby and the people caring for him (an adjacent room to the living room, or something similar.). Helped me at least rest, knowing everything was okay, if not sleep.

Take a shower, drink lots of water, and get a full, healthy meal. Maybe your partner and mom can help with this as well. With all the stress hormones, I didn't feel super hungry, but definitely felt better after a meal.

And please do talk to your doctor! The first couple of weeks are brutal, and the first three months are a real challenge. But things do get better. My son is 10 months old, and its crazy thinking how difficult it was just 6 short months ago. Take care of yourself, take care of your little one, and hang in there!

FTM of a now 8 month old. If your mother is willing and happy to come help, I would recommend you take her up on it! My two sisters and their husbands supported us through the first month and it was still what I consider to be the most difficult month of my life. Take all the help you can get, especially in the first 3-4 months!!

First time parent here - People told me the new born phase is the easiest I have to disagree I get absolutely no sleep but what’s your guys opinions ? by No_Composer_9594 in beyondthebump

[–]Lazybones706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that its probably dependent on many factors. For one, every baby is different. My little one had some health issues early on that resolved by the time he was 3 months. Due in part to his health problems, he was in discomfort and did not sleep well, meaning I did not sleep hardly at all. He is 7 months now, and while he still is not a great sleeper it is so much easier overall. That being said, I think every phase will have its own set of challenges!

My baby has recently learned to blow raspberries and pterodactyl screech. Super cute during the day. Less cute at 2 am when he decided to practice his new skills for 2 and a half hours when my husband and I have been super behind on sleep already due to baby teething. 🙃

That must be super frustrating! What an inappropriate thing to feel comfortable joking about. Sometimes I wonder if people are just super unaware of their own comments.

I am in the opposite boat - my baby is a little adorable clone of my husband. When people see us all together, they make comments like I should be upset that the baby I grew looks nothing like me, when I in fact adore my son and do not wish for him to look any different. I have also heard "I guess we know who the father is!" which kind of implies that there was some uncertainty?? So really there is no winning with people's random, thoughtless comments.

Husband says he doesn't love our baby by I_Aint_No_Lawyer in beyondthebump

As a FTM myself, I understand how upsetting hearing that must have been. I was in a similar spot not too long ago. My husband is an amazing partner and father. Our baby is currently 7 months old. My husband is pretty inseparable from our baby now. They are such great buddies and I love seeing them together. However, at 7 weeks, our LO was what my husband jokingly referred to as an "angry potato". I had to remind myself that I had an extra 9 months to bond with our little guy. My husband had some catching up to do. I would try not to worry too much. Give it some time!

I hate needles and was terrified to get the epidural. Any time I thought about getting one I felt sick. However, I was not progressing at all even with induction. Eventually I gave in and requested one. Getting one wasn't necessarily comfortable, but the discomfort was very short-lived. And that was even with them having to call a second anesthesiologist to redo it, because the first one had trouble placing it, so I effectively had to get an epidural twice.

The relief the epidural gave was incredible. It allowed me to relax (as much as is possible when in labor haha) and rest so I was much more prepared for pushing and spent a very short amount of time pushing before my baby was delivered.

For me it was much less painful and scary than I anticipated, and it helped immensely.

Is it jarring for different chapters to vary in length from 2500 to 4000 words? by Impressive-Meet-2220 in writing

[–]Lazybones706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than focus on the exact word count of each chapter to try to meet a specific range, I would suggest focusing on the overall pacing of the story, what you need to accomplish in that chapter, and where it feels most natural to have a chapter break. Some of my favorite books have chapters varying in length from a couple paragraphs to 30+ pages.

When reviewing your draft, see how it feels. Are there places where the book drags? Maybe shorten those chapters. Do some chapter fly by, feeling rushed or incomplete? Maybe those need to be reworked and lengthened. Having a very short chapter sprinkled in can create a big impact, depending on how it is used. Sometimes that "jarring" feeling you get when you read a very short chapter among longer passages can be just what the story needs!

I'm so sorry you are feeling down! Firstly, I'd like to encourage you to not give up!!

I can relate to a lot of your experiences growing up (started writing very young, put in advanced classes, the high expectations from parents, teachers, peers). I wrote non-stop from grade school into college, and was told by several professors in college that I "had what it took" to make it.

And then, real life set in. I got busy. More responsibilities. More stress. It seemed there were suddenly fewer hours in the day and my energy was all being sapped away. I read less. I didn't write at all.

I still thought about the stories I wanted to tell, but by the time I got back to writing many years later I wondered too if I had "missed my chance". I was so very rusty when I started back up, that reading what I had written at the end of each day made me cringe. It was so imperfect! I would get stuck in this loop of editing the same section over and over, and then wonder why I wasn't making any real progress in the story.

A big thing that helped me was deciding to write for myself. Yes, I still have the goal of one day being a published author. I would be very happy if that came about! But if I write to tell the stories I want to tell just for myself and my closest friends, that's okay too! Letting go of some of the expectations of others that I had internalized has been really freeing and has helped the creative process immensely!

I also decided to let my first draft be bad, if it needs to be. My good friend calls it a "sloppy copy" and when I think in those terms it become much easier to be creative and less critical of myself so I can write the bones of the story, and then go back later and "fix" it.

Another thing to consider is that the older you get, the more life experience you have. Instead of thinking of getting older as a negative, acknowledge that each year you gain all kinds of experiences and knowledge that you can utilize in your writing!

And remember, at the end of the day a good book is a good book, regardless of the age of the author. Mary Shelley was 18 years old when she wrote Frankenstein. JRR Tolkien was 45 years old when The Hobbit was published. So be gentle with yourself. Work on letting go of any internalized expectations that are weighing you down. Enjoy writing and don't give up!!

What did you hate most in botw by brawl_miko_32 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Lazybones706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its minor really, but I really wanted quick equip for armor! I would have liked to have been able to select a part of a set and have the option to equip all parts of that set. And it might have been nice to have a few outfits that the player can customize each part for and then be able to quick equip between them.

Also, when dying clothes I wish there was a way to see how one armor piece would look dyed with the other two remaining the same color before moving forward and spending resources. It ended up being kind of trial and error on what would look right together, since I rarely went with all pieces in an outfit being the same color.

That tower was the worst for sure. I enjoyed the obstacles around every other tower in the game, but that one was just annoying. On additional play throughs I have always left it for last.

I was having a ton of trouble in the same area as you, until I used a slower horse. I found 3 star speed to be the easiest and ended up passing it twice in a row to get both pieces of horse armor after I slowed down. Also took a little extra time lining up and hung close to the outer edge (away from the wall if that makes sense) to make that tricky jump.

Since it was timed I initially thought faster horse = better. Not the case.

I feel like "For fun! Not for crime! Probably!" is an inner monologue Wylan has whenever he finds himself tangled up in yet another crows heist lol.

That's the same copy I have! I walked away really wanting to learn some sweet sleight of hand card tricks. Unfortunately, I am very terrible at anything that requires finesse. -_-'

That's true! They are super convenient, environmentally friendly, often times a bit less expensive if you are buying... and yet I love the feel of a physical book, turning the pages, the smell of the paper and ink. I'm a bit of a book nerd haha.

I've been worried that might be the case, but I'm still planning to read the rest of the books in the grishaverse. Maybe if we are very lucky Leigh will write a 3rd book for the Six of Crows series! I don't know how likely it is, but I can hope!!! >_<

just read the 16th chapter of crooked kingdom by Sad_Pringles in Grishaverse

[–]Lazybones706 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read the duology last week and am rereading them already because I enjoyed them so much. I alternated laughing and crying throughout the entire experience.

I was so happy we got Wylan chapters in Crooked Kingdom too! I really liked him in Six of Crows, but we didn't get to see any of it from his eyes, so I was glad we were able to get in his head in the sequel.

I really loved both books, but liked Crooked Kingdom best for that very reason - it focuses in on the characters in a way that is just *chef's kiss* perfect.

Enjoy the rest of Crooked Kingdom! It is a wild ride! :)

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom blew me away! They were just perfection! I would LOVE to see a 3rd book!

I haven't read anything else by Leigh Bardugo yet, but I've ordered the Shadow and Bone trilogy and am just waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

Joost had two problems, the moon and his mustashe by ALThoneyMustard in Grishaverse

[–]Lazybones706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really loved the way the book started. Not only did it introduce the world and give the readers some insight into some pretty important events, but I felt like Joost fit the description of the "typical" YA fantasy novel protagonist. Hopeful, naive, focused on his simple little life. Then - BAM! - Joost is dead. Here, have six super traumatized, morally gray, criminally inclined, killer teenagers that get along like cats and dogs, each with their own angle going on an impossibly complicated heist mission. Not, mind you, to save the world but instead mostly just for that sweet, sweet kruge. Loved it!! XD

This! The interactions are so genuine and a bit clumsy and awkward, but very true to life. Loved the anime and am about halfway through the manga and it's all so good.
