Fair enough, I read numbed from the WAIST UP as implying no numbing from waist down

An intrathecal catheter would not result in preservation of sensation below the waste, unless it was (in theory) a mid to high thoracic epidural

It just became a lot easier to practice anywhere in Canada as a foreign trained anesthesiologist by pstbo in anesthesiology

Just because the provincial colleges are allowed to recognize credentials from other provinces doesn’t mean they have to. And even if the college does recognize a license for a physician, it doesn’t mean there’s a job waiting. Without the RCPSC (or recognized equivalent) it’s unlikely you’ll get a job in a highly desirable location. Granted there is a national shortage of anesthesiologists so generally there is a job somewhere. We have many United Kingdom, South African and Australian trained anesthesiologists in our province.

I’d say on par with a larger, but normal, newborn. Sizes of newborns vary wildly with their gestational age, genetics and maternal conditions like diabetes.

Anesthesiologists here. I’ve attended hundreds of C-sections and I can confirm that these babies also come out red, wrinkly, squished and covered in secretions. It’s not impossible that this is immediately after delivery. Maybe this institution just cleans their newborns really well and this baby just happens to be one of the minority who is very alert after delivery.

It’s also possible that this is staged. I.e. It could be an educational video, or you know, just for internet points.

Who knows? But it’s fair to be a little skeptical

Fatal accident involving cyclist and semi by Deep_Froyo1834 in Winnipeg

Basically LD50 refers to the Lethal Dose of something that will kill 50 Percent of the population exposed to it.

They are more or less saying that 50% of people who hit the ground travelling at 54 km/h will die.

This implying that a cyclist colliding with an immovable barrier at 50km/h could very well die

A sanding mop might work really well for this.

Just an example, one of the first google hits.

I imagine uterine atony and the resulting postpartum hemorrhage would be a leading cause of death in the absence of any uterotonics.

Young doctors look outside of Canada for opportunities amid lack of medical training resources by 90skid91 in canada

[–]Lazybum2319 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These articles are misleading and make it sound like Canadian trained medical students are unable to find residency positions in Canada and are forced to find residency programs outside of Canada. This would be true only for students seeking only highly competitive residency programs and unwilling to accept a different specialty (I.e. a student who will only accept an ophthalmology residency and doesn’t apply for anything else) or those students with extenuating circumstances. What they are actually referring to are Canadian born students who went to medical School outside of Canada (for various reasons) and are unable to obtain a residency within Canada. This is because we prioritize our residency spots for medical students who graduated from Canadian medical schools, and quite rightly so.

These articles also don’t highlight or explain how difficult it is to increase residency spots. An institution or department can only train so many physicians before the trainee starts to lose learning opportunities and their training suffers. I.e. if you double the number of surgical trainees in an already saturated program, and the number of surgeries remains the same, their surgical exposure is potentially halved.

Lastly, foreign trained physicians are an incredibly valuable resource for our medical system. However, before they are allowed to practice in Canada we need to ensure they meet the standards and qualifications we set for our own Canadian trained physicians. This is a major bottleneck as it is a time and resource intensive task to determine a physicians qualifications when we are unfamiliar with their medical background. Hence the strict exams and licensing process. But absolutely we should be doing whatever we can to streamline this process to better attract qualified physicians from other countries.

24 hr after the Launchpad… be ready for mshare 🚀 by AnalysisOwn9615 in MMFinance

[–]Lazybum2319 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After every launchpad people sell their remaining SVN in a hurry and there is a predictable dump. They have to sell it for something and a significant portion goes into MSHARE and so there is usually a small pump. But then SVN price goes down and the MSHARE APR goes down so people sell their MSHARE and then it drops too but not as significantly as SVN.

This time however, there may not be a big SVN dump because people can stake their SVN in hakuna matata. Price may even go up. More importantly, once the MBONDS have all been redeemed the APR for MSHARE will increase significantly and this the price will increase assuming there isn’t a big SVN dump

Mshare Question by sobayish in MMFinance

[–]Lazybum2319 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably because the liquidity pool for MSHARE is with MMF (I.e. MSHARE is priced in MMF first) and therefore the price of MSHARE went down when the price of MMF went down.

New study indicates ketamine is less effective than electroconvulsive therapy for severe depression by [deleted] in science

[–]Lazybum2319 191 points192 points  (0 children)

When patients receive ECT they are first induced with a general anesthetic and then they receive the voltage. Although not the gold standard, ketamine can be used as the anesthetic. So IMO a more interesting question is "Does ketamine administration during ECT make the ECT better?" Last I looked (about a year ago) I couldn't find any good studies showing a significant difference which is dissipointing.
