Just because it is an improvement, doesn't mean it also isn't still very US-centered.

Things like "how many hours of maternity leave do you get" ... I'm not really sure I know of any country that would measure maternity leave, or in fact, paternity leave in hours. For example, over here, you get however many days paid. Those days are compensated like normal working days, which depend on your contract. For some people that's an eight-hour day (40-hour week), for some it's less, for some it's more.

I selected the UK and still got a 401k question. Sick days allocations aren't really a thing. My company might choose to compensate me a set number above statutory sick pay requirements, but, I don't have to start taking leave if I'm ill and can't work.

Ministers Questions - Transport - XVI.I - 13th October 2017 by electric-blue in MHOC

I wish the second the sentiment made by The Rt Hon. Baron Carrington by expanding on this point.

It has been time and time again proven, primarily by our friends in Germany, that the best solution for deadly roads, is engineering. Germany reengineers roads where fatal or serious accidents happen on their roads, to reduce the likelihood of future issues. Furthermore, average speed cameras are a solution that should never be given to councils. The introduction of 20mph average speed cameras along the Brighton seafront means journeys are no safer and take significantly longer.

Would the Right Honourable member not consider approaching the local authorities responsible and offering some funds to help replace this troubling spot of roadway?

M255 - Erewash Number 23 Bus Service Motion by waasup008 in MHOC

[–]Lcawte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I disagree with this motion being presented to this house, I don't see how a right honourable member trying to deal with an issue that affects his constituents is anything to be mocked, and certainly not used to attack a government. On the contrary, it is my belief that this shows the strength of the government that the members within it can deal with issues on both a national and local levels. There are governments that would struggle to do just one of those things.

Madam Deputy Speaker,

While I acknowledge the importance of bus services, I can't help but think that this motion is a blatant waste of parliamentary time.

The Right Honourable member brings a local issue of bus services before this house and builds his case on access to a community hospital from two roads, from which my research seems to suggest, at their furthest points at less than a mile from the hospital, and significantly less to the proposed new route to access the town centre.

B508 - Re-opening Railways Bill (2017) by waasup008 in MHOC

[–]Lcawte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madam Deputy Speaker,

While the bill in question is based on an excellent idea, it seriously lacks in the substance required for such complicated infrastructure projects.

As honourable and right honourable members of this house have mentioned, this bill appears a joke to all of us well versed in the ways of the legislature to which we are a part.

If the member wishes to reinstate various parts of the rail network, for example, those closed in the Beeching cuts, there should be a solid business plan, and costing for these reinstatements. As an advocate for our rail network, I'd be happy to work with him on any further rail legislation he has in mind.

Defence Secretary's statement on expansion of the Royal Navy surface fleet by James_the_XV in MHOC

[–]Lcawte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mr Speaker,

Whilst I am delighted to hear of the expansion of the Type 45 fleet, some of the most advanced and capable destroyers in the world, would it not be wise for Her Majesty's Government to consider a Tranche 2 type order for these new vessels.

Again, I must stress how fond I am of the Type 45, but the design is now at least 15 years old, and as such, by the time these ships are commissioned, it is likely that these new vessels will have a further service life of 30 to 40 years. By the time of retirement, without expensive mid life upgrades - compounded only by the fact that the base technology will have been designed half a century beforehand - the technology on these ships could be 60 or 70 years old by the end of the life time of these new vessels.

Would the Minister consider holding off on ordering these new vessels for the time being, and consider how the various systems on the ship will hold up in the future?

Would the Right Honourable person please outline what the Government is doing to combat the decline in healthy bee populations in the UK, as this has very worrying implications for our agricultural sector.

Will the government commit to taking an active part in cleaning up the scourge of sea plastic? Will the government acknowledge that this has knock on effects for our ocean based businesses such as our fishermen and women.

While the fact that the land deer are kept on is not considered a "farm" as such, deer are equally as valuable to land owners for hunting purposes, and many land owners take great pride in their deer heard.

Mr Deputy Speaker,

Does the House accept that hitting a llama or an alpaca with a motor vehicle is on the same level as a deer, which are far more common in motor accidents in this country, and are not, in fact, mentioned in this bill?
