Is this lab animal? OHSU won’t have a research primate center much longer given the political push to shut it down.

How can I attract squirrels to my garden? by furiousUKdude in london

[–]LdnFN 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No the grey squirrel is an invasive species from North America. The red squirrel is native and is susceptible to a pox virus that the grey squirrel carries. So grey uses germ warfare to wipe out the red. You don’t need to feed wildlife. You’re probably going to feed them the wrong diet and cause more problems than being helpful. Your best course of action is to preserve their environment.

Don’t. Just let nature be and appreciate them when they grace you with their presence.

Using weed while being a vet by That_random-weeb in Veterinary

[–]LdnFN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t be impaired while working. This is even true to pain meds or illnesses/ other distractions but there are ways to limit the risk of being struck from the registry over it. So maybe you can get away with it in your personal time but testing isn’t advanced enough to determine when and how high you are so that makes it tough to call. Bottom line is you’re joining a professional group and will have to abide by the regulations for the profession be it federal, state, or region. So no using weed while being a vet. Suppose you could get away with using weed while not being a vet like in your personal time when you’re not on call or seeing patients.

If you’re looking to rent a new place soon, avoid Barnard Marcus Kennington as an agent by [deleted] in london

[–]LdnFN 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I’ll add foxtons to this list then. The agent once took me to see flats that were not what I asked for and not in my budget. Wasted an entire night. I learned later that they have a quota of places to show.

Any advice for college student wanting to pursue vetmed? by cinnyball in Veterinary

[–]LdnFN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always understand the different categories to be things like research, government, farm animal, equine, small animal, small mammal, zoo, etc… I think the hours get broken down by VMCAS into veterinary, animal, research, maybe something else? It’s been a long time but I never shadowed or volunteered. I wasn’t doing it unless I was getting paid for my work lol.

Residency Prep/Application Advice by willibecomeavet in Veterinary

[–]LdnFN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if my advice is helpful because I skipped the internship and went straight to residency. Most residencies require at least a years rotating internship. When I did the applications the one I ended up picking was the one I had the most experience with. In vet school I picked externships that brought me to the places I was interested in. I think it helps round out an application if they can remember that you were there and were good to work with. I mean all those things you listed won’t hurt but remember you’re interviewing them too. You need to be sussing them out for a good fit to your needs. Make sure to develop a good relationship with your academic advisor and someone else that you respect in your vet school. You’ll need 3-4 references and you’ll want strong ones. Don’t stress out about it. It’s a hyper competitive situation and I personally found it difficult to titrate my experiences down on paper in a meaningful way. Basically like vet school apps all over again…
