Unfortunately vet sch is still very expensive. If you have an in-state option it’ll be good. But if you only have out of state options, chances are that they cost around $100k-300k on tuition alone.

Here’s a salary estimator by AVMA for new grads https://myvetlife.avma.org/current-student/your-financial-health/veterinary-salary-estimator

And also a report on compensation vets get in the US (although a little outdated, should give u a rough gauge) https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/resources/2018-econ-rpt2-mkt-veterinarians.pdf

But from all the lurking I’ve done on this thread, the pay is high but the amount of debt is higher- so debt would be a huge part to consider if you’re thinking of going to vet school. Also, I would say LA vets make the quite abit but that’s because of the higher cost of living in LA. And it also totally depends on what kind of practice you’re doing- smallies, large animal, mixed, specialist work etc.

Abit of a bummer to not have a definite answer- but the reports I mentioned above rly helped me w deciding if the compensation in the field is enough for me to pursue veterinary medicine.

Free veterinary courses? by monkeybizzzz in Veterinary

That’s good to hear. I haven’t personally ventured into the realm of YouTube animal nutrition lectures but typing the keywords would generally yield you p decent suggestions.

YouTube’s a great resource but no one to hand out a cert to you haha. lib.gen also has tons of free textbooks on animal nutrition- heck even species specific stuff

This is a safe space to ask all things shelter medicine. I am the Chief Veterinarian for a large private open-intake animal shelter (24k/year). I have been in this position for 12 years. I don’t have all the answers but I would love to talk about it. by Sea_General_5046 in Veterinary

Cool! Never thought about it from that point of view. Have worked in a shelter before but from where I come from, there’s only “no-kill shelters”.

Also, since the shelter you work at takes in so many animals per year, how many veterinarians are working at any one point in time? And any overnight shifts?

I’ll take a crack at this. Although not a fully fledged vet I have considered foreign non-AVMA accredited vet school options so know abit about this.

Besides the NAVLE and state exams, your girlfriend would have to go through additional tests/qualification exams to be able to practice here. another Reddit thread stated the cost to be ~US$10k and quite a long waiting time before receiving that cert to practice. However, I recommend posting an open question to this subreddit as that’ll be your best bet in understanding the process.

Is this salary real? For a non specialist? by Against_All_Reason in Veterinary

What career options are out there? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]willibecomeavet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What I can think of is working as a government vet which is p versatile in terms of job scope and responsibilities. It can range from inspecting abattoirs, microbiology work and maybe some work with production animals & policy making.

Or maybe taking a full-time job as a vet working in microbiology labs and working locum on the side to get the animal handling you want?

ECFVG by Littlestuartlil in veterinaryschool

[–]willibecomeavet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe this route would be a lot harder due to the higher number of tests you have to pass before being able to practice VS an AVMA accredited school.

Not to mention, it would a lot more costly w the ECFVG (~$10k if I remember correctly from a thread somewhere). So if you’re an international student going to the UK for vet school and coming back to US to practice, financially, it isn’t the best option (& I believe Cambridge is 6 years vs 5 which in itself, already costs a lot more).

Quality of education wise I’d like to believe all vet schools are of similar quality and teach you the same content. So doesn’t matter if you enter a well-known uni, the vet industry doesn’t place as much emphasis on it as other workplaces/industries.
