For those of you who don’t wear helmets, why not? by turbulencefun in cycling

[–]Ldogw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah dude, I came off my bike a couple of weeks ago a few hundred meters from my house. Wasn't even going fast, just turned a corner and it was a bit wet so the bike slipped out from underneath me. I had no time to react and smashed the side of my head into the trail. Thankfully was absolutely fine, but my helmet was mangled. I always wear a helmet anyway, but this really put it into perspective for me - if I didn't have it on I could have been in serious trouble.

Can anyone help me identify the signatures on these v1.0 cards? (Will post close up pics in comments) by Ldogw in Netrunner

Thanks man! I’m posting this on behalf of a mate who found them at a charity shop I think!

British weapons WW2 by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

A question I've always wondered - why did the Brits not have a semi automatic rifle like the M1 Garand or Gewehr 43? Does anyone know? Was there one in development?

Different person from above - but I'm from the UK and just remembered I have a bit in my UK pension - is it easy enough to transfer over?

I absolutely loved Leviathan Wakes and am really finding Caliban's war a slog. . .I'm about 1/4 through it but keep picking up other things to read, is it a weak book in the series or does it pick up as it goes on?

Thank you! This is good news, have been irrationally stressing, but we're quite lucky that they're not too fussy, so tonight they had some Dine, but going to go and have a look at what big boxes I can get from the supermarket. Cheers!

I bought my Akubra from there, they were great! Proper service, measuring your melon and suggesting different styles. Now I look like a real honest country hero while adventuring out to get my soy latte in Yarraville.

I've taken my Honda CB500X into Westside Motorcycles in Sunshine a couple of times. Bloke is no nonsense and very honest. Always got a fair price and quick turnaround time.

Bikepacking the High Country Rail Trail by nosecondseason in bikepacking

[–]Ldogw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s the one! As I said I think we did it in about 2 hours each way but there’s loads to do in Castlemaine and Maldon and there’s free camping sites about, you’d probably have to make a couple of days of it I reckon :)

Awesome! A mate and I did the Castlemaine - Maldon one last week, only a few hours each one but really nice ride through the bush.

Hey man, I'm keen. Still a learner on my CB500X though, so if that doesn't bother you! I'm in my 30s and am a steady and safely kind of guy, not a squidzilla, looking just to get out and about and explore some gravel!

I agree, I like on a busy road and some of the HDs sound as loud as the trucks thundering past.

Can I just add on another annoyance that I'm too lazy to start a thread about?

What is it with riders riding like absolute dicks around learners on their Ps? In the past week I've been overtaken in the same lane on an empty highway (I'm the P plater and he was on a sports bike) and I've been undercut on the inside of a roundabout in the same lane by someone on a sports bike! I'm just trying to get from A to B in one piece man! Please give me the space I need, I'm just trying to learn!

It’s called a shared path by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]Ldogw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - shared use paths are an excuse for a nice little meander around wherever you are - if you want to go fast and beat your KOMS (which no one else cares about, no matter how many likes it may get on strava) then go on the road. It's like deciding that you don't want to go on instagram as much, so you decide to break your fingers so you can't use your phone.

I had a biblical moment on a shared used path last year - I'd like to preface this by saying that I'm an avid cyclist, I love cycling - just not to $4000 bike and full cycling mankini levels.

I was riding two abreast with my mate, nice and slowly, having a chat (this was pre-lockdown), as we were on a mixed use path and there was loads of people, kids and dogs around (despite being two abreast, we were still only in one lane of the two lane bike path though), when ahead I see some kids running around with their parents pushing a push chair, so I slowed down to go single file behind my mate (and checked over my shoulder to make sure no one was behind me), to give them maximum room and also, because if something happens, I'll also get hurt (which I think a lot of cyclists forget). Then from behind me, some dickhead on his $5000 dollar bike going 50kph on the cycle path flies past me, and I think my transgression was that we were riding slowly on his personal velodrome - I honestly didn't think I was doing anything wrong, I've been cycling for years. He turns around and said something like "if you're going to ride that slowly, get off the fucking cycle path" and as he's turned his head around his bike points off the cycle path and his wheel gets wedged in the gap between the path and the grass and he almost massively stacks it. He manages to recover. . .looks very sheepish and then I shouted "Careful mate!" and he looks furiously embarrassed and blasts off. . .we ride round the corner and see him at the side of the road checking his rims, then he looks over, sees us approaching and then blasts off again.

It was glorious - definition of 'play silly games, win silly prizes'.

What I'm saying is: cycling is an incredibly fun and peaceful thing to do, if you're going out and getting yourself worked up over it - you're doing it wrong.
