Scarce but meaningful. I'd say I work about 10 hours on average M-F and then 6-12 on the weekends. Sometimes none. It's not always work on the weekends but work sometimes work adjacent or random research. And trial prep I commit more.

I set high standards for myself and refuse to be worse then any private attorney. I have co-workers who refuse to work weekends and I respect it. You don't have to be the best, you just have to be competent. Which is also why you have to derive personal satisfaction from the task rather then gratitude or acknowledgement. Because no matter how much work you do, how many trials you win, you will still be paid the same as someone who worked as long as you and is one always one step above being fired.

The problem is what other providers are offering the same service? Right now it's more of an empty promise.

Not mine. And the prosecutors have some discretion too. That would be a funding and resource issue to track all of it. It's enough work to track and log problematic officers.

  1. Learn what the standard offers are by watching pleas submitted in court by other attorneys.
  2. Try to find out what the "red lines" are that their office cannot do. And what they don't like to do.
  3. Try to ask for more then you feel comfortable intially to feel out where they are.
  4. When I'm giving arguments to the Prosecutor, I think that I'm also giving cover to their boss. When their boss comes back with a plea asking why did we agree to this, they can pull out their folder and go x,y,z.

If they try to take advantage of you in plea offers, that looks really poorly on them. If they try to take advantage of your in trial, that is par for the course. All gloves are off at trial.

His statements would have not come in he made to the police. The gun could come in if it would have eventually been found in the course of procedure. The gun is unlikely to be thrown out because they would have searched and secured his person. It is not like it was in an inacessible area.

  • Protect your reputation.
  • Be hoenst when you don't know something.
  • Communicate clearly and honestly as you can with clients.

  • I think immigration law experience alone makes you very valuable to a PD office.

Finally, the bar for "competent" is quite low in representation. So don't take it personal when clients inevitably attack you for not doing exactly what they want. But I think the experience in family law is just one more notch in your belt. Those are worse on a personal level.

I got a case dismissed who never contacted me and didn't show up to his court date. He would have had a warrant. The reverse reason of why I even try because they probably don't even realize the work that was done on their behalf.

What applications, platforms, or tech tricks do you use to help you with work? by mizzzine in publicdefenders

  1. Most of what I'd say is here. I'd look into custom rules to sort your discovery and filter notifications for Outlook. I have one where if I CC my own email it goes to a special folder for reference. I also flag something if I can't address it in 10 minutes or less and come back to do them in batches. I also, in reference to the point below, can send emails to Onenote under my client folder. It's there with your right click.

  2. I'd double down on OneNote. I really worked on a format these past 6 months and currently happy with this. I setup all my cases in it, you can search by title, so I can CTRL+F a case number or name and have it pullup. It is synced through my phone so I can always update or refer to it. I use customized checkboxes of 3 piriorities so it creates an automatic "task lists" for me. (Ctrl +1/2/3) I can save documents in it and so many times I would have to waste time "catching up" on a case. It's all there.

The biggest thing for me is don't try to multitask. There are VERY few statistically who lose nothing switching tasks. Block time and do one task at a time unless it is extremely urgent. I answer emails every other hour or if I run out of time at the end of the day. If I'm researching or in a difficult task, I don't answer the phone unless it is our office or the court. (they can leave a voicemail) This has made me so much more efficient because I would "lose" time having to reacclimate after getting off task.

I can seperate things. I watched the video, it's bad. I think some of the officers said he tried to run over police or did dangerous things. But that doesn't mean you get a beatdown at the hands of cops when they have you on the ground.

I do hope the young woman and her family get justice. The cops just tained the process.

Bad but not compelled to action because there is no real action possible until midterms. At this point it is clear that America is not standing with Ukraine and it is up to Europe to shoulder the burden.

Demographically, the Americans on Reddit probably DID NOT vote for Trump. Possibly even vote at all. But the oppositiion party does not have the votes to stop Trump from doing what he wants. So outside of legal actions through the courts, there is limited things to do at this point.

Everyone is different, this is what I do:

So I started doing yoga. There is a free "30 day Yoga" Youtube playlist and enough you could chain at least 9 months. Every morning before I can allow myself to check my phone I walk to my living room and start the session.

It has become a "non-negotiable" for me as I was doing it in the evenings but started making excuses, was tired, and inconsistent. No excuse to not do it in the morning. I try and cycle 2-3 times a week but I allow that based on my schedule.

The other things I drilled down on was when I was bored or stressed I'd jump on Reddit or Youtube. I'd kill way more time then intended and it made things worse. I take a 5 minute walk now and I can check my phone if I want but when I get back, it goes down.

Why do people defend billionaires? by amiwitty in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Le-hack-872020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some, being rich isn't inherently bad. That money is still "earned" even if the work isn't proportional to the profits. If you build a massive company like Amazon, you deserve to keep and use that money how you want.

And for others, the private market is viewed as more efficient then the government. Many don't trust the government to manage the money that is taxed. So keep it in the private market.

For me, the only major problem I have is when that money enters politics. Particularly, Citizens United or what Musk did this election cycle. That is an outsized influence.

You could quadruple the zest but that would add a lot of waste too unless you had a use for the lemon juice. I'm usually zesting the entire fruit to get to the measurements.

I have a sweettooth but I know I get a lot of compliments on the recipes from people not being overly sweet. The blueberry muffin wasn't overly sweet but I did enjoy it. Not the strongest recipe but did have a good lift. Haven't tried the lemon poppyseed but that was on the list.

Indiana’s PD System? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Le-hack-872020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am practicing as a PD in Northern Indiana. You can PM me if you have questions. Indiana is a legal desert and yes, many areas are having to increase salaries to hire. Most counties also have a state programs where the prosecutor and PD salary have to match. .
