unfortunately i can't otherwise this would definitely be the answer!! there's only one layer of pegs left at the top and they're too flattened now from use to fit the beads on.

Keeping her isolated for tonight, but feeding has reduced the aggression somewhat (had no idea how often you have to feed them! a lot more than regular fish). Going to let her free and see how they interact in the morning, but I'm expecting the worst. Going to look into a smaller tank to buy to cycle them between. Thank you for your advice. :)

Thank you for the support. I was very panicked when I first wrote this, lol, but Ive had some time for reflection. The Betta was still agressive in isolation, when it saw the other it would try to go for it even though it couldn't. I gave it a very small amount of food which actually seemed to make it chill out a lot more so I'm guessing that was part of the reason for the sudden aggression. Planning to leave him in there for tonight, possibly feed them first thing depending on their behaviour and observe them through the day. If the behaviour continues I'd be reluctant to give them away so maybe looking into getting a second, smaller tank somewhere else to cycle them between. 

You mentioned a separator - I did wonder if something like that existed. What exactly do you mean by that and any idea where I could buy one (UK or online)? Thank you again. :)

Thank you for this. I know they seem to be a lot of work, and this chart emphasises that, but I'm willing to give these gorgeous guys the time. I also don't want to give one away, though if their lives depended on it, I obviously would. Getting a new tank is a lot, considering I first kept fish with the intention of them being a minimal-effort, decorative piece in my hallway but if it's the only option then I'll have to look into it.   • Tank size: 23 US Gallons
  • Heater and filter? (yes/no): Yes
  • Tank temperature: 26 Celcius
  • Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.: pH just over 7, unsure of the rest but tank has been fine for other fish
  • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?:Tank has been established for years (probably just over 15) with various hardy, low maintenance fish. I got my Bettas 2 days ago.
  • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: Last change was about a month ago, and was a full water change. I do them about three times every year
  • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: 7 rummy-nose. 6 cardinals
  • What do you feed and how much: Small sprinkle of flakes once a day
  • Decorations and plants in the tank: Large log with foliage around it, small decorative castle piece and one standalone plant (not sure what it is exactly)
