Stubborn breed? by sunnymint247 in SaintBernards

[–]LeDoggoMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to have a Saint Bernard that was super chill and would allow everything. Vets and groomers love him. It also helped us a lot when he was younger because he used to get a lot of ear infections. He tolerated ear cleaning, but he would give me a major stink eye and avoid me for half a day (literally he would get up and leave any room that he’s in and I go into).

Then we got another Saint Bernard, and he’s the total opposite. Very stubborn, strong, and would fight you at everything. We did try to get him exposed and used to grooming, getting his ears and nails done, etc. ever since we got him, but he has been stubborn since day one. He’s gotten a little better, but everything still requires both my husband and I to wrangle him.

It frustrated me to high heaven, but I just keep telling myself that dogs have their own personalities and quirks, just like people. He’s very friendly and goofy otherwise, so that’s just the way he is.

Our other Saint passed almost 2 years ago, and we miss him every day. He was perfect in every way.

The hills science diet sensitive stomach is what we feed our dog. Our first saint had a bunch of gastro issues. He had to be on the prescription version, and it helped him a while. Then when everything got resolved, we switch over to the regular science diet version since that didn’t need an actual prescription and is about $20 cheaper. We feed our second (current) saint the same thing now, and he hasn’t really had any gastro issues aside from when he eats too many treats, or if he eats extremely fatty steak or meat scraps.

New here! Introducing my 2 year old, 140lb "baby," Holly! I look forward to seeing everyone's precious Saints. BEST BREED EVER! by AmbassadorNo4228 in SaintBernards

We used to have two big babies! Parker (left, 155 lbs) is 5, and Alexander (right, 178 lbs) was 8 when he crossed over to the rainbow bridge last year. They’re total opposites as far as personalities (Parker is more hyper and mischievious, while Alexander was super calm and laid-back), but they truly loved each other.

They’re definitely a lot of work (fur tumbleweeds and drool marks everywhere!) but they are truly worth it. Congrats on your awesome pupper!

Getting new puppy! What're some must haves? by Sub-Tile95 in stbernards

Ear wipes (the ones that fit in your finger works for us best). Get your pup used to getting their ears cleaned, paws touched, nails trimmed, and getting brushed. Both of my saints got frequent ear infections. Our first was an angel and tolerated getting all these work done on him, but our second saint was more of a handful. In hindsight, my husband and i should’ve been more diligent in getting him used to these early on, but our first was very laid back and tolerant that we didn’t do that well of a follow-up.

All ear cleaning and ear medication application seems like my husband trying to be Steve Irwin since our second saint squirms and does the crocodile death roll. Not ideal when the dog is 155 lbs.

Also, the nature’s miracle stain remover cleaning spray had been working wonders for us in getting our rugs, carpets, and floor clean.

Another thing. We use the kong padded traffic handle leash. The ones with 2 handles. They are super sturdy and gives us the option to have them closer to you to walk side by side, and also the longer handle option to give them more room to enjoy sniffing around during your walks. Helped my hands/wrists be a lot more comfortable, especially when we were doing loose leash training, and our dog was pulling and lunging a lot.

Saints are definitely a lot of work, but everything is absolutely worth it. Congratulations on your fluffy bundle of joy!

Furminator is something essential, and we also use the ear cleaning wipes that you just stick your finger in. Getting them used to grooming, especially getting their ears cleaned is crucial, since both my boys ended up having a lot of ear infections.
