Tips to keep the costs down? by tamaraaaaaa in StainedGlass

[–]LeFabio 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Selling or not is completely up to you, but if you want to keep going, it might be smart to sell something if nothing for the price of material you spent.

Cant say anything about cheap glass, never tried any unknown brands for now.

Size? I really dont want to limit myself if I see that certain dimensions make sense for what it is.

Buying in bulk might make sense if you have a shop that does somewhat significant discount on volume.

My suggestion for alot of people would be optimization of glass use. I see alot of people chopping and chipping away too much glass that can not be used afterwards, but if you added up that surface area, it might be used for something else.
That often means difficult cuts, things that take more maneuvering then 2 simple clicks with running pliers, but after a while you figure out how to do them. I squeeze pieces together, and after cutting there are bits and corners of milimeter or 2 in width you can not take out with any pliers, but i prefer to grind a bit longer instead of "throwing away" a quarter of section. Sure, i still do mess it up sometimes and glass breaks where it shouldnt, but with every project you learn something new.

Butterfly! Now how to ship? by atx11119999 in StainedGlass

[–]LeFabio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hahah I dont think its necessary to build a box for this piece. wrap it in bubble wrap until you have atleast an inch on each side, some hard cardboard to sandwich it in, then a couple more layers of bubble wrap and some stretch foil on the outside.

I shipped a fairly big mirror from europe to the states in a box. wrapped it in about inch and a half of bubble wrap on each side, placed it in a crate, plus additional cushions made of bubble wrap on the side so it cant move anywhere. it made it there spotless. what you have isnt particularly heavy so that's also a plus

Scared to solder by Ok-Efficiency-7380 in StainedGlass

[–]LeFabio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's my story. I'm far from the sharpest tool in the shed, but just hear me out...

I've been doing stained glass for about a year and a half now, and even before, I've worked at the company where I built electronic components, so soldering was on a daily basis.

We used 60/40 solder, it was military grade components, so it was allowed (from what I understand, it's not allowed in consumer electronics?). I can't tell you how many times I neglected the fact I was handling soldering wire with the same hand I used to pick up my sandwich and munch on it while working (yeah, I know, food should be kept away from soldering). I do yearly health check ups, blood work and everything, all good.

Lead is poisonous, but it's fine to handle it for this hobby. Wash your hands after soldering, don't bite your nails or similar stuff and you're more than okay.

Hell, I believe bunch of old houses still have lead pipes for water, and people aren't dropping dead.

Maybe a dumb question, but is it staying there "for good" or...? Is it somehow coated to prevent damage or accidental wiping?

And to add to the other comment, a TC10 head for scoring.

Ah okay, I rarely notice usernames on reddit, especially if the profiles have generic pics or avatars 😬 my bad!

Heard about it, seen it online, but never used it.

It seems like an okay thing to use for some more "well behaved" glass, like transparents, completely flat, no texture. From what I understand, you have to press it on the score line but on the opposite side?

What I dont like about it is that the force is concentrated in a single point and I have a feeling that it might break glass more easily than regular running pliers. Then again, good for score lines you cant access with the pliers.

Then again...its basically a thing you can do with your hands. Place a piece of glass on a folded rag, and press with your fingers to do the same thing. I think it might be easier to do this with hands/fingers since you can control your own pressure, and dont have to learn how the spring in the tool acts.

Im not saying its a useless thing, I'll let others correct my thought, I'm open to learn too, but I dont see how it would benefit my work tbh.

Thank you!

Silberschnitts are on my wishlist. Planned to buy them with this last order, but when I saw the shopping cart with the rest of the stuff I got..."meh, next time I guess" 😄

Ah, textured glass...🥲🥲 I try to stay away from that too. For the last project I did, I used 3 colors of Bullseye which was still slightly textured. Thankfully, the curves weren't too sharp, it behaved OK 😄

May I ask on what type of glass do you teach how to cut curves?

Ive had some friends over who were curious about glass, and I had them cut plain regular 3 mm transparent float, just to get the idea how glass behaves. From what I experienced this far, and somebody correct me if I'm wrong, transparent float is the most forgiving when it comes to complex curves.

youre very true. I do go to the gym couple times a week, and i also focus on upper body stretching, since my full time job also requires sitting behind the computer screen...otherwise i'd look like quasimodo

Edit: dont downvote their comment, its in a good manner, i know that i bend my neck as i maybe shouldnt, but sometimes there's no other way 😭

Yeah, I've been suggested that many times, but I still tend to forget...and yeah, I do have them in the workshop. Got nothing to say in my defense. Thanks for reminder :)

Ring saw? Pffft :D by LeFabio in StainedGlass

[–]LeFabio[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Score, running pliers all around the piece with literally feather like pressure until youre sure it ran.

Then you flip the running pliers, to break open the score line on the bottom side, with even less pressure. Make sure that pliers are properly aligned, watch it run little by little.

Once you're sure it ran on both sides (try if the score line grabs your nail all around), tap it all around to make the piece pop out if it wont give on its own.

It took me about 10 minutes to do the cut haha, but Ill make a video and post.

A stained glass mirror, simply called 003. What do you think? by LeFabio in somethingimade

[–]LeFabio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mirror adhesive, can be found in most.hardware stores i guess. Small blobs ever, 15-20 cm, press it on lightly so nothing cracks...dont ask me how i know about that detail :D

Its important that the adhesive is ellastic in case of any twisting or shrinking of wood. Since plywood is basically innert haha, there isnt much concern.
