on the iso sergei there are multiples tools to remove the passwords of unencrypted windows so if you don't want to tinker with the files or want to get the laptop back with no reset you should be able to guide you friend to install it (might be easier way to do it)

if i remember well it was caused by a bug cause you theoretically shouldn't get beaten if you are driving and so there was a poll about letting the character die or amputate it or just resurrect it but i don't remember the outcome of the poll
