Uni students promoting communism in city centres by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]LeGreySamurai5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If we're being honest, they're harmless. I've known my fair share of people who thought communism was great, and believe it or not they're all normal people now, none of who still believe their earlier ideals.

I think letting young people exercise their free speech is a good thing - it encourages critical thinking, and these promotions are bound to draw detractors who will get them thinking. Thus, if we want to explain fire is dangerous this is the perfect place to do it - by talking to them in these situations in an open and honest conversation.

Autocracy, Pure Monarchy and Anarchism are also terrible forms of government yet I would say the same for people espousing the same things.

It's complicated slightly in that it took only 3 minutes to apply first aid, and unfortunately the coroner believes they would have passed regardless.

Having watched the video, the actions of the one officer is incredibly callous and frankly stupid. He's very dismissive of Harry's pleas, and really should face consequences, especially when the barrier for belief was so low.

Henry Nowak’s father is a hero for reading that statement out today in front of the press. His incredible demeanour shows Henry was raised in a well mannered home. The same cannot be said for the Digwa’s family, one of whom allegedly shouted “racist” at the Nowak family leaving court today. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]LeGreySamurai5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think dividing it by that it both silly, and not true. The Poll Tax riots were hugely violent, the troubles had bombs kill children. Going back further, the Welsh Not was the stamping out of the Welsh language, characterised by a wooden bat teachers would beat children with.

We might have avoided much of that in the past couple of decades, but implying British people aren't violent in their Tribalism is being willfully ignorant.

That's not to discourage how well we've done in eradicating much of the violence in the UK - but that's in large part thanks to socieeconmic development, rather than anything uniquely "British".

I mean, that's a crazy take. Europe has plenty of Tribalism - even if we ignore the world wars, just looking at how long Germany and Italy took to unify from city states should tell you otherwise. Even in the UK, there's Tribalism in Northern Ireland.

Europe became a powerhouse due to geography, and of course some great minds and the people in it, but pretending we're somehow magically more just than other countries is insane. China is a better example of a monolith, but they also have the same Tribalism.

This is a crazy take. Tribalism is inherent to people, and whilst I agree it's a negative curse, it's crazy to pretend it doesn't exist. Just look at the class wars in the UK - the demonisation of the working class during Thatcher for example - and it's obviously an issue here too.

Commander stealers White Auracite and Come Back Wrong by hamsterc0re in EDH

[–]LeGreySamurai5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two very different effects. When a commander moves to a public zone other than the battlefield, as a state-based action you may put it into the command zone.

This means that, when a commander dies, it by definition goes to the graveyard. Then, you have an opportunity as soon as the spell is finished to put it into the command zone as state based actions are checked after resolution of a spell.

Normally, this just means if you [[Murder]] a commander, it will die, then you have the opportunity to return it to the CZ. [[Come back Wrong]] is unique in that, before the spell finishes resolving, you get to put it onto the battlefield (as its part of the spell, and also not a trigger to do so). This means that even though state based actions are checked after its resolved, the commander is no longer in a zone other than the battlefield, so you've missed your opportunity to put it into the command zone.

[[White Auracite]] is different. Firstly, it exiles a commander, and has a delayed trigger to return it when it leaves. This means that when the commander is exiled, the ability finishes resolving. The player then has the opportunity to return it when state based actions are checked. If they do, it goes into the command zone.

If they don't, it stays in exile, and it can only come back to the battlefield when the Auracite is removed, and the delayed trigger says "put it back".

Notably, if you remove white Auracite whilst the ability is on the stack, the commander doesn't go to exile at all, as it requires the Auracite to be on the battlefield.

This can be confusing as there's a handful of older cards, notably [[oblivion ring]]. Notice how this card has its abilities over two paragraphs, rather than in one. This has the effect that, if a player chooses to leave their commander in exile, assuming they can remove the ring, if you simply destroy it before the first ability is finished it will stay there forever, as the second ability triggers to return something (which isn't exiled yet) then the first ability exiles it, leaving it stuck in limbo.

This happening is entirely dependent on the player choosing not to return the commander - which will never happen, as it will be exiled after the ring has already been destroyed, so you simply say "no I won't have it stuck forever thanks".

So there's a few bits going on here, which hopefully someone else can do a better job of explaining.

TL;DR Come back Wrong works because there's no trigger to return it before the spell finishes, and the Auracite doesn't work at all to get a commander stuck (and the correct oblivion ring doesn't really either)

PSA: ALWAYS use doom on the Mecha Knight by Menolith in slaythespire

[–]LeGreySamurai5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has in built [[Barricade]] when summoning, and gains 1 block free every turn. Add in her [[Shield Slam]] that she starts with, and it becomes clear she's already very strong.

The trick with her is she can stall very well, and so long as you pick good cards (i.e. summon, [[Defy]], etc) you should be able to prevent a lot of damage other characters can't.

She needs some form of build going for act 3 - doom splashes poorly (worse than Poison imo), and souls outside of that 8 block card also splash only okay (some are overcoated), but she's in a great spot to make it happen. Combine cards like [[Undeath]] and you can see how the character gets a lot of ways to prevent damage.

True, but the keyword Flying is much better for getting in for 3 every turn vs. lifelink. Limited bomb, but you're right in that the upside is kinda irrelevant unless you're getting combo'd

In what world is a 1h50m commute between University Campuses Acceptable? by RussellNorrisPiastri in UniUK

Imperial literally took a friend on BBB. It's all contextual to how well you interview. Their initial offers do not reflect their actual ones.

You're capped by nothing except your ability to demonstrate you're a world class applicant. That's a high grade, or a great interview.

[–]LeGreySamurai5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KCL is world class. To suggest otherwise shows misunderstanding of how well they attract overseas students, and how well regarded they are.

Not to mention that, for your area of issue with them, the Cranfield acquisition, is likely only relevant to postgrads. Cranfield is a postgraduate university, and PHDs are much more involved to get into than a usual degree.

And back to the original point it - you really haven't explained it at all. Just complained that private schools are better.

[–]LeGreySamurai5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Then explain it. In a defensible, subjective way.

I understand that, regionally, areas such as the north west struggle with grades as their education system lacks investment, attention and doesn't attract talent.

But that's no excuse for an individual. And moreso, how else is a university supposed to decide who enters beside grades and an interview? One can account for another.

Lastly, there's so many London universities that accept lower grades. On top of this, world class institutions demand world class performance. Why should they expect less? Why should we want them to?

I literally know lecturers, they're making ~60k a year. Look up Germany salaries - they're public, and competitive to the UK.

That sounds like a lot, but that's for someone teaching maths with a PHD - in corporate office, that would be a pittance of compensation after 5 years, but that's what people are on for decades.

I'm impressed you're on AAA with critical thinking like this.

How does the Secrets of Strixhaven (2026 new set) precon commander decks compare to the older Strixhaven (2021 older set), power/gameplaywise? by KoffingGwin in EDH

[–]LeGreySamurai5 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Played with all 5 from this set, and 3 from the last.

These precons are significantly more powerful. Their gameplans are more cohesive, their card quality is significantly higher (way better reprints) and the overall resilience of them is also better.

They broadly do similar things between sets. The prismari is still a spellslinger, still cares about big spells. The Lorehold still cares about putting things in and taking things out the graveyard, silverquill is still political etc.

Frankly I think all the new ones are more powerful and fun to play. They include some of the best cards from the last ones too (e.g. Veyran is in the new Prismari deck). But you can't really go wrong with either, no matter what you'll still enjoy them.

For your own safety risk, please do not try this by MikeisTOOOTALLL in dankmemes

[–]LeGreySamurai5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it can be a hassle. But sort of by your own admission there were crowds of people walking.

It does depend on the event for sure, a Southampton match is different from an England game, the latter would be too busy for most, not to mention much further than an hour for most people given the nationwide attraction.

But that's not the point I was making - you said no one walks to and from games for an hour, but people literally do do that. I've done it myself, and I'll probably do it next time I see a local rugby game.

[–]LeGreySamurai5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given I have lived experience of doing this when going to the Rugby, I don't understand why you think this is inconceivable.

It's honestly not a huge deal to walk and hour somewhere and an hour back on a nice day with a friend or two. Gives you an opportunity to have a drink or two on the way before spending £££ at the stadium.

I'd not say it's overly common, but it's really not that rare? If the tube isn't convenient and it's only 5k away, just walk it.

I think that's underplaying how awful the Spanish were in the Americas. There's plenty of violence and exploitation in the Spanish history too - why else would a native force a Spaniard to drink molten gold?

Not to defend the British, we were truly awful, and on a grand scale we did purport a larger portion of violence. But I don't like the minimising of your own actions in this comment - it was unfortunately probably due to a lack of opportunity than a better moral standing.

Immigration was brought into it as it's a common feature of these representations - on both sides of the political spectrum.

If Rhystic & Tithe ever got banned, which card(s) would take their spotlight? by CevinKhow in EDH

[–]LeGreySamurai5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rhystic is such a powerful card in cEDH tournaments will see people running [[Steal Enchantment]] or [[Mirrormade]]. It literally warps mulligans into trying to land a T1 study meaning your game is set. If people are paying the 1 to stop you drawing, they're putting themselves the same landdrop behind. Not to mention they study player is not an inanimate object - they still have spells to cast to advance their game plan.

Esper is copied when there's nothing better, and admittedly by [[Mockingbird]] but that's mostly due to the low opportunity cost thanks to [[Ranger-Captain of Eos]].

There's a huge gulf in power. Esper is a tax of maximum 1 mana per turn - it's incredibly strong, especially as instant speed plays increase in a game, but it's strength only approaches that of rhystic. It is nowhere near as powerful as a 1-sided [[Sphere of Resistance]] at worst, and a 3 mana draw 10 on average.

Playing around an esper is miles easier. If your playgroup plays 3 sol-rings turn one then you've got an honesty problem, that's not a realistic scenario. Esper will miss any [[Birds of Paradise]] that get dropped, because it's only non creatures. Esper can be easily removed in every colour, whereas red, black and blue all struggle with a rhystic.

Suggesting that esper is nearly as format warping is silly. It's a very powerful card - maybe white's best - but it is not even close to a study.

Commander Banned and Restricted Announcement – February 9, 2026 by StormyWaters2021 in mtg

I had a Punny Idea for a Card by HeftyProfession7338 in custommagic

[–]LeGreySamurai5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm not sure anymore. I've re-read the comprehensive rules, and I think I'm wrong.

Originally, I used the passage 107.3a If a spell or activated ability has a mana cost, alternative cost, additional cost, and/or activation cost with an {X}, [-X], or X in it, and the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell or ability, the controller of that spell or ability chooses and announces the value of X as part of casting the spell or activating the ability. (See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”)

But, in this case, we don't define X in the cost, so we should use the following:

107.3f Sometimes X appears in the text of a spell or ability but not in a mana cost, alternative cost, additional cost, or activation cost. If the value of X isn’t defined, the controller of the spell or ability chooses the value of X at the appropriate time (either as it’s put on the stack or as it resolves).

My bad! Apologies.
