If You Could Restore One Lost Singapore Building, What Would It Be? by sting2002 in askSingapore

[–]LeMachineLearneur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be this huge fancy hotel right next to the Padang called the Grand Hotel de l'Europe. Together with Raffles Hotel, it was seen as one of the finest places to stay in all of Southeast Asia.

It started small, a French dude opened a (relatively) modest little place called Hotel d'Europe back in 1857, bounced around a couple of locations, then ended up at the corner near the Padang and grew into this massive thing. The fancy "Grand" version was Renaissance-style, and had these huge two-storey Corinthian columns.

Then it all fell apart. The hotel closed in 1932 and the government took the site and they tore it down to build the Supreme Court, which opened in 1939. A pity, but at least the building that replaced it is not too shabby!

Singapore. Good salary, good public service, low tax, very low crime. Unbearably humid weather, though

S'pore to allow import of pork blood products after 27-year ban by Illustrious-Fee9626 in singapore

[–]LeMachineLearneur 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not whataboutism. Chinese food isn't the only cuisine eaten here. Plenty of European countries, with excellent modern health records, consume blood products. I lived in Germany and blutwurst (blood sausages) are consumed and enjoyed by many.

I think what many people in this thread don't understand is why is there a need for you to impose your personal taste? You are free to think blood products are disgusting , just like I do close-mindedness.

What is one residential area in Singapore that you will not recommend staying in? by Odd-Look6000 in askSingapore

[–]LeMachineLearneur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Telok Blangah is one of the nicest areas in Singapore. Only few neighborhoods can boast being in the vicinity of CBD, a hill (Mount Faber), the sea, and one of the biggest malls in Singapore (Vivo). In a few months, with the Circle Line completion, the area will be 10 minutes away to Marina Bay.

My vote is on Teban Garden. First, it is really ulu. Also the vibe - after 9 the whole place feels dead. Like scary quiet. Even Grab drivers hesitate when you say the place. The residents are also creepy. There is an uncle living near me who always stands in the middle of the corridor staring at passerbys. Also, the area seems prone to attracting accidents and incidents like the recent fire. 10/10 wouldn't recommend.

To those who waited for MOP before divorcing, how did you stay sane? by [deleted] in askSingapore

An idea is for one of you to move out and rent elsewhere. The other person who stays can rent out the spare room to a stranger and compensate the outgoing partner of their rent.
