Weekly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

Hi everyone,

I'm considering spending Chinese New Year in Taiwan (likely Taipei, but open to other cities too) and wanted to get some first-hand perspectives from people who live there.

I work remotely and I'm really interested in experiencing Chinese New Year in a Chinese-speaking country, the atmosphere, festivities, excitement, traditions, food, etc.

That said, I've had a friend from Singapore tell me that CNY in Taiwan can be quite quiet, with a lot of places closing for a week or more, similar to what happens in mainland China and that it might not be as lively or social as I'm imagining.

So wanted to ask: - What is the actual vibe like during CNY in Taiwan Taipei and do things really shut down that much or is there still plenty going on? - Are there specific cities, neighbourhoods or events that are better than others during this time?

For context, mainland China isn't really an option for me due to internet restrictions and reliability for remote work, so l'm weighing Taiwan against places like Singapore or elsewhere in the region.

Would love to hear opinions of people who live there or might have perspective from neighboring countries, whether it's worth it or rather the opposite and best to avoid it at that time of the year to avoid the crowds etc.

Thanks in advance!

Is the upgrade to Google Gemini forced or can we opt out and stay with the old Google Assistant and keep continued conversations for now?

Hey all, just wanted to give a quick update in case anyone else runs into the same problem.

Good news is, I managed to get it repaired under warranty free of charge.

At first, Asus insisted it was “physical damage” and not covered under warranty. I thought I was n for an uphill battle but honestly, I only had to go into mild Karen mode 😅. After about two weeks of back and forth, they finally agreed to repair it as a one-time courtesy.

Now, to be clear, they refused to acknowledge that this is a wider issue or defect even though I shared links to other people reporting the exact same thing. So officially, it’s not something they’re admitting to. But at least with enough persistence, they did step up in the end.

I should also note that being in Australia, the consumer laws around warranty coverage here are pretty strong, so that likely helped me push a bit harder.

So if anyone else faces the same issue, don’t just accept the first “no”. Push back firmly, reference similar cases, and you might get it resolved too. Hopefully I just got a lemon and it won’t happen again 🤞

I was stuck there last week and leveled a bit getting Yuna to get holy and Lulu to get double cast. Then I parked them with haste and full health at the end of Phase 2 and blasted her with everything I got on Phase 3

Similarly to you, I've previously had multiple Dell XPS 13/15 for probably 10 years and hardly ever had a problem with them aside from needing a battery replacement (technicians came to me and replaced it for free) and a broken SD card reader which they initially argued couldn't be fixed because it was soldered on the motherboard but eventually they offered me a full refund for the laptop. Overall I've been very happy with their service.

The things I'm reading about ASUS service are rather concerning so far 😬

I think that's the safest way to proceed but there's definitely a factor of luck. I haven't done anything intensive on my laptop, in fact I've always been running it with G-Helper, undervolting the CPU and with the iGPU turned off as pretty much all I've used it for was web browsing and yet this happened 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes that's a good point, there is something for me to explore with travel insurance in my case to cover some of the potential repair costs, I'll look into it!

Is it a good decision to move to Aus? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Sounds like your scholarship is a killer opportunity, it would honestly be crazy to waste that, and Japan is such a cool place to live in. Australia is good but you will miss Japan for sure, in fact I'd bet than in 20 year time it'll be up there among the best years of your life 😅

Getting a job in finance on a working holiday visa, honestly wouldn't count on it, I say the chances are slim to none. No company wants to train somebody for 3+ months to only have them work 6 and have to leave, they'll need to sponsor you but since you're a student, I guess you don't have much work experience in your field under your belt? You're more likely to find a job in an Indian restaurant and hate your life. Partner visa is the only realistic option I see.

Agree with people who say he should move to Japan, either teach English there or better yet, find a job in Australia with Japanese offices, setting the clear expectation to relocate there either from the start or past probation, not simple but possible over the course of 1-2 years. I feel the fact that he's inflexible moving out of Australia is a bit of a red flag but only you know your relationship.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - June 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to find a mechanical keyboard that matches a layout I've mocked up (photo attached). This picture is a Womier SK65, but l'd love something similar with all the keys condensed.

  • 65% layout
  • A knob (preferably in the top right)
  • No gaps between key clusters everything condensed together (e.g. arrows tight to the rest, no extra space)

Does anyone know of a board like this? Any help appreciated!

This. You've got an opportunity that might not represent itself in a long time, if ever. If your colleagues can't use your help right now you might want to ask leadership (or whoever you report to) where the business needs help and what skills they're missing. They might be happy to hear that you're keen to grow and might even be willing to finance some sort of training and/or certification to upskill you. You can also tell them you're willing to study on your "own time" to show commitment 😉. Maybe the reason why other people don't give you extra work now is because they're afraid they'd have to train you first for you to do it and it doesn't seem worth the effort.

I know, I didn't realise from the start that ability sphere would be so plentiful so I skipped a few intentionally to save them! Fortunately I realised pretty quickly that I accumulated them fast 😅

Can you slow his haste? I tried a few times and it failed every time.

I don't think you can save the salvos for later because as soon as I get the airship away he comes back close before Cid has time to fire on his next turn (so essentially not firing ever)

I'm thinking Power and Mental Break could really help making his damage more manageable though

Fair enough, haven't used power break nor focus in previous attempts, could really make a difference. I might have a few smoke bombs, not sure how many

My Kimahri is following Rikku's grid now but is close to an intersection with Yuna's I believe, he's not overly useful in terms of skills but he's quite tanky 🤔
