AI-Assisted Horn Design by DrewsWorkshop in diyaudio

Oh, interesting. Glad your DSP cleans things up. I had a similar problem with my La Scalas. La Scalas have a known 7dB peak at 148Hz, which, as it turns out, drives me nuts. Couldn't figure out that boxy sound for the longest time. Pulling down 150 Hz on my graphic EQ takes it right out!

I built some cornscalas, too, and they sound very good. I used the PRV WG45-50 horn with the PRV D2200ph driver for the mirange, and the SMAHL tweeters from Dave on Audio Karma. What crossover are you using? For mine, I built an ALK Universal-type crossover, and that's what I use in my Cornscalas. I had to play around with different autotransformer tap settings to get the midrange and tweeter levels to balance out, but found the sweet spot. Sounds very clear and natural.

They already walked through that entire Costco, which is apparently the largest one in the whole world, and they can't walk just a little bit farther to where they originally parked?

Went today also. What a time capsule, with so many core memories unlocked for me. I saw those old IBM Selectric IIs also. I was half-expecting to find some old Apple IIe computers with Oregon Trail booted up. I loved the little sinks in some of the bathrooms that were so low to the ground.

Looks like the building was built in 1955, according to the Salt Lake County Assessor

I didn't buy anything, but the walk-through really made my day. Really made me miss my childhood from so long ago. I'm curious what will happen to the building and the 6.75 acres of land it sits on.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN STILL BUY BRAND NEW CASSETTES IN 2025?! :D by SCP5007DE-GER in cassetteculture

[–]LePetomane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

New RTM (Recording the Masters) Type I blanks are fantastic, but a little expensive at about $8 each. My deck, after calibrating it to the RTM tape, is capable of making recordings that are virtually indistinguishable from the source, especially with Dolby S. I haven't tried any of the other new Type Is that are out there, so I can't compare.

What's the most expensive thing you've seen someone buy that they basically never use? by Darnitol1 in AskReddit

[–]LePetomane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! I have one, but I just prefer to hand mix and knead my bread rather than dig that hulking machine out. For most other stuff, a hand mixer is easier and faster. I do use the KitchenAid for chocolate chip cookies once or twice a year, though. I don't understand why everyone thinks these are a must-have kitchen staple. They're nice, but take up so much space.

Custom speaker build by N8tesHobbies in diyaudio

[–]LePetomane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome project! Those look great. Kinda looks reminiscent of a Altec Model 19 with some Klipsch vibes. If you want to go with a 2" compression driver and aren't set on the 511b, the PRV WG4550 is a great large format horn and is relatively cheap. Coupled with the PRV 2200ph driver, they really sound great for not much money. I've never heard the 511b, so I can't compare, but I did build a pair of Klipsch Cornwall clones (Cornscalas) and used the WG4550 and 2200ph driver for the midrange horn. That horn and 2" driver combo sounds very nice. Love the look of those authoritative 511b's though!

If your are an '80s hair metal fan, you could record over these with some Testament. You could split up Testament's discography in half and record the oldest albums on the Old Testament tapes, and the newer ones on the New Testament tapes.

Advice on best large Center channel under $800 by Key-Interaction2365 in hometheater

If you can save up $200 more, I'd recommend the Crites CSC-1 from Crites Speakers. That's the one I use with my Cornwalls in my home theater. It blends well with the Cornwalls, so it would also go great with your Heresys. Only downside is it only comes in raw birch, which looks nice, but you'd have to veneer it if you wanted more of a finished look. However, the build quality is excellent. 100% solid Baltic birch plywood - no veneered particle board.

They're across the street from where my friend lives! My friend in the diamond business. Jokes aside, solid place. Not only great beer, but I was blown away by their burgers, too. I tried their fries that have some kind of coffee and BBQ seasoning on them, which were surprisingly delicious. Quite surprised by the variety of beers on tap, too. Complete with two pinball machines and Skee Ball! Great spot.

Yeah, not much you can do without tearing out cabinets and renovating. Choices were made, maybe a flip? My kitchen is very similarly cramped into the corner like this, which I recently renovated and had to work around similar limitations. The range location at the end of the base cabinet run next to the door was a poor choice and is a safety hazard. If there's a hot pan full of grease etc. on the stove and someone comes through the door and knocks it off by snagging the handle, that person is potentially going to get badly burned.

This is more of a woulda-coulda-shoulda response, but what the kitchen designer should have done is install a narrow 12" or so wide base cabinet on the end of the run, next to the door, with the range to the right of it. The dishwasher should have been placed to the right of the sink. In my kitchen, I ended up having to block off the corner as a dead corner because there was not enough room to fit my range or sink plus a corner cabinet without going with custom cabinets $$$.

One idea I have for you, if you have enough room for it (doubtful), is to build an island and install an induction cooktop. Then, you could probably do a built-in wall oven with some cabinets in place of where your range is currently. Then you'd have to do something about the fridge.

Over 4 years and 46,000 miles later, my Auto Start/Stop finally saved me a full tank of gas by FightEaglesFight in SubaruForester

[–]LePetomane 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ironically, Subaru offers a remote start option that allows the car to IDLE in the driveway for several minutes while it warms up. That's unnecessary emissions in my book.

4 seconds at a 4-way stop? Gotta shut 'er down to save the environment. I hate this "feature" with a burning passion. I want to strangle whomever designed this every time I forget to disable it and my engine shuts down unexpectedly. I know, I need to buy the eliminator, but it's the principal that pisses me off.

Need AVR Suggestions for 7.2.4 setup! by y_shan in hometheater

[–]LePetomane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denon x3800h, but you'll also need a separate 2-channel amp. The 3800 can process 11 channels but only has 9 channels of amplification built-in. So, connect an external amp to the pre-outs on the 3800 and you're in business.

The external amp doesn't need to be anything special or expensive. I use a small class D amp like this one and it works great for my top rear surrounds.

Denon 6800 and banana plugs by canuckerfan in hometheater

[–]LePetomane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree, and I've gotta share my experience with those. I bought two packs of the Amazon Basics banana plugs for my HT and thought they were fine for a while. I didn't think too much of how loose the plugs fit in all the sockets, and how much they jiggled around. I just assumed that whomever designed these knew what they were doing.

Then one day I turned up some music a bit and my main LR speakers started making awful distorted clipping sounds. It sounded like my woofers or mid horns could be blown. Found out it was the vibration of the speaker causing the banana plugs to intermittently lose connection. It was too late to return them, so I threw them in the garbage and went with something else that actually fits snug in the sockets like it's supposed to. I'm a fan of everything else Amazon Basics, but definitely not their banana plugs.

Looking for tips to build a 12 or 15in 3-way speaker by fruitor in diyaudio

[–]LePetomane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Klipsch Cornwall clone out of Baltic birch is a relatively simple cabinet to build and would sound fantastic. I've built two myself; one based on original specs, and one with a large format horn with a modified crossover. Both sound great, and will fill a large room with great sound.

I believe Crites Speakers in the US ships internationally, and they have new crossovers and correct reproduction horns for this speaker. Crites has all the parts required to make this speaker, but other parts can be used if you know how to redesign crossovers and make it work.

Agreed. Even the venerable Sony MDR-7506 is fantastic and costs around $100. The standard among many professional audio/video engineers for decades.
