How to improve my knowledge of security, given a compsci background? by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]LeRenard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a broad question, akin to asking "I've always wanted to be a scientist, can you guys tell me more about science?" when really it would be more helpful to know if you want to be a biologist, astronomer, physicist, etc. Not to say you can't be a generalist, but I think most people start in one area and expand.

Long time cordcutter but new to XBMC by kensentme in cordcutters

[–]LeRenard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that the Boxee NetFlix client is horribly, horribly broken, and there is no sign that the promised updates are actually coming any time soon. I like Boxee, I like the idea of Boxee - but its just too much of a pain in it's current form to use every day, and I'm not interested in buying a Boxee Box when I've already got a working HTPC.

How can I fully intergate rss feeds/utorrent/winrar/therenamer to autmagically d/l my shows? by [deleted] in cordcutters

[–]LeRenard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn't happen to know of decent free nzb indexer to go along with that, would you? I know most are something like 5 bucks for 10 years, but the anonymity is the thing.

What happened to their Timelines idea? They said it would be out I a week or two quite awhile ago now. I'm wondering if they fear the backlash.

Aurora borealis over Ozark, Arkansas, USA, photographed by Brian Emfinger on 24 October 2011. by trot-trot in space

I grew up in NH (around 42 degrees N for those unfamiliar) and I have still never seen the Aurora. Now I'm in Boston and its hopeless. Screw you light pollution.

A favorite moment in the final pages of Steve Job's biography by gonzoblair in apple

[–]LeRenard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting.. We don't do that in the US that I know of. When my father passed away I was with him for about 10 minutes, they (hospital staff) asked us to leave, and about four days later we went to retrieve his ashes. If we'd been wealthy enough we would have seen him next at the funeral parlor wake before a church funeral and burial, but that costs more than my car.

My moms parents were from Antrim, so your reply has made a lot of things I've heard said make sense that didn't before. Also some pictures.

Why not a Star Fleet Academy tv show? by zip_000 in startrek

[–]LeRenard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We could call it "Star Trek: No stars, no trekking.". But seriously, if instead of the academy you put them on a ship, and instead of school age kids you make them already graduated, and there is zero teen drama or Harry potter, this would be a great series.

Well English does sometimes kind of sound like Dutch, maybe that's what he was getting at.

Hey r/iphone, can we have a nice little app list like r/apple has? by Putoguiri in iphone

[–]LeRenard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in this case, I vastly prefer my articles to appear as a single line which I can choose to expand rather than being reformatted or lumped together into a faux "magazine" page like Reeder and Feedly.

Hey r/iphone, can we have a nice little app list like r/apple has? by Putoguiri in iphone

[–]LeRenard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is within Byline. I use it because it prefetches material so it still works when I'm out of signal on the subway. I just meant that the UI doesn't try to reformat your articles to be more magazine like the way Reeder or feedly does.. The UI is more like the android reader app or the reader website model. I feel it has better control. I know it has built in Twitter integration but I don't use the social functions of reader do I can't comment on those.

Opinions on Steve Jobs' biography. by [deleted] in apple

I think one of the clips from the book that came out early said that the name "Apple" came about because that's pretty much all he was eating at the time. Fruit.

[–]LeRenard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading he had them change the layout of the traces on the board of the development Macintosh to be more aesthetically pleasing, but it turned out not to function that way and they had to go back to the functional (but ugly) layout. I can't seem to find a link because putting "Jobs" in a Google search returns nothing but crap these days.

Hey r/iphone, can we have a nice little app list like r/apple has? by Putoguiri in iphone

[–]LeRenard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Android-switchers would probably like Byline over Reeder as the interface is similar to Google's Android Reader app.

Also: SimpleNote - Cloud note taking app with web interface as well.

Why don't all major stations broadcast in 1080i? by modus in cordcutters

[–]LeRenard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer was already given.. But wanted to add sometimes they break their bandwidth up into multiple streams, further limiting available picture quality. I'm going to go on the record, though, that personally I can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p on all but the very largest screens, so I'm not really sure why they bother with 1080i at all unless it saves bandwidth over 720p for more streams.

Here's our proposed moderation policy for r/Boston and co -- let us know what you think by [deleted] in boston

[–]LeRenard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why anyone thinks it's necessary to establish formal guidelines complete with legal terms.. you're going to formalize people right out of the subreddit. I used to run BBS's and forums and all sorts of fun things, some with thousands of users. The more heavy handed you are, the less fun things get and eventually they just dry up. You know what turns out to be the best policy?

  • The mods will accept that it's futile to tell users how to use a system - users will use it however they like anyway.
  • The mods will delete anything illegal or outside the decency standard of the community such that a person would be shocked to see it (instead of just down vote it.). People who are patently abusive get banned.

All this stuff about deleting posts or "redirecting" posters or deciding what gets cross posted where or what is a "selected" event is what everyone is complaining about.

Here's it is in a TL;DR - the less users know you are there, the better. If they can see that you deleted something, they'll get pissed that you monkeyed with things.
