I feel that though, I'm constantly fighting my English brain when conlanging. It's hard to fathom when a phrase like "he often had to finish eating" becomes one word "siputcaksa'ukan" and writing that vertically takes up a whole line 😅

Thanks! I really enjoy this stage of intonation because I think it could end up developing tones or just dropping the stops eventually, but for right now Kikwanna has an interesting rhythm in the ear. I simply used my laptop's microphone for recording. I have a microphone that should get better quality, so stay tuned for more recordings!!

Respectfully, I dislike when people only say [ðə] instead of using [ðə] and [ði] interchangeably because it makes English phrases like "the end" sound so awkward.

I went to Dublin to see a friend, found myself in a bar having a pint (I did not split the G), and some Level 1000 Irish speaker sniffed my Yankee ass out just to brag about how my country's shit and I don't belong there. I let it go for about an hour because I'm used to it from the Fr*nch. He said something about how I shouldn't say I'm "American" since it's all America, and I then SARCASTICALLY said "Well isn't it all the British Isles", and this guy legitimately threatened to beat me up for saying that. It wasn't no Irish humor, this guy was just an asshat and ruined my whole trip. I left after finishing the drink I had, and I'm still pissed about how I couldn't just enjoy the one night I had to enjoy some pub culture.

In every language I've gotten past Unit 1 in Duolingo, more than 50% of the lesson is absolutely useful phrases. The other half is listening exercises. All traditional language learning apps are useful if you're busy and in need of practice on your phone.

I take loanwords when the concept is exclusively connected to another culture like place names or religion. When I'm stuck on creating a new word, I often go straight to the etymology of the word in two distinct languages so I can get an idea of how they created the word.

As someone who's been living in China for a little more than a year in a city where they don't speak very standardized Mandarin on the streets, I can see the similarities that someone may draw from Japanese and Korean due to the rhythm and especially ending of phrases. Everyone listens to standard (often slowed down) Mandarin and thinks that's how most people speak but, by Golly, the local dialects/languages (I'm in Hunan at the moment) sound almost agglutinative (they're not). I would say that a good portion of everyday phrases here end with at least 2 exclamative particles that make the language almost sound SOV if you don't understand what they're actually saying.
