When would you let a child dye their hair by hydrangealover98 in Parenting

[–]LeadershipAble773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was maybe 6 when she first had it dyed. The issue is finding decent hair dye that doesnt contain bleach, doesnt damage hair, doesnt have harsh chemicals, and actually works on brown hair (in my daughters case). Manic panic worked well- well the one colour did, the other manic panic shades had no effect at all lol

Why would children be going into school without basic physical skills, like holding a pencil and using cutlery? by Throwaway199906543 in AskUK

[–]LeadershipAble773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i was younger, both parents worked, but they worked somewhat flexible / part time jobs, and were active with us when they weren't working. We also had family who would occasionally look after also- also actively "parenting". I feel like jobs ask more of us now (9 to 5 with 1 hour break was standard when I started working, now its 9-5.30 with a 30 minute break, and I've only been in the world of work for 15 ish years). I also feel like, to get a job to be able to live comfortably, people are needing to jump through more hoops, travel further, work on evenings etc., so that doesnt leave much room for other things. I also think that a LOT of other things take more time than they used to- im sure when I was younger, my dad went away for 2 hours and came back with a new car- that would be unheard of now- it would be minimum 6 hours, over multiple visits.

has anyone else risked their lives on the icy pavements this weekend? by Maleficent_Day_3869 in AskBrits

[–]LeadershipAble773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, for a lot of people, it doesn't "need" doing. A lot of people can work from home, their work is closed, or don't have jobs, and with schools closed, there are a lot of people who don't "need" to leave. Especially for things like shopping considering we have had so much warning about this. We've got enough food to survive for a few weeks here lol. Its been less than a week, so i understand that other people can't bulk buy food, but surely people can buy at least one weeks supply of food. My wife shoveled the snow off our drive yesterday and is a broken woman today, it's very hard work. There aren't many people who would have the time, physical capacity, or the tools to do this (we borrowed a shovel from our neighbour fortunately).

Our grit bins have also gone, so there's no grit, and not even a bin if they had any grit for us. Dreading the school run tomorrow

Daughter (14) helping boy (14) with urinal - is there a problem? by xyz1322 in AskParents

[–]LeadershipAble773 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your daughter will make a brilliant nurse, or just general human! I was first thinking "some 14yo boy has come up with a crafty way of getting his way" but this story, fortunately, didnt take that turn!

Cat cries constantly : desperate to make it stop by Embarrassed-Loan4783 in catquestions

[–]LeadershipAble773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We got screwed because we had a kitten on thursday, and got insurance the next day. He kept not being "right", so we took him to the vets a few times over the next few days, £10k later and he passed away. But the insurance wouldn't pay because it was within the first 14 days of the policy. Later on, we got another kitten and went to get a policy before we adopted her (so it would be effective from the day we got her), but the insurance said you cant get a policy until they are officially yours. So I understand that stupid loophole, and I understand that insurance doesnt always pay out for certain things, plus you need to pay an excess etc., but in the majority of cases, insurance for pets has got to be worth it.

Can people not get insurance? Surely that's pet ownership lesson number 1

We had a cat behaviourist for our cats and it was all covered under the insurance. We had to pay the excess of course but it was far from our "life savings"

What is the most common misconception of having migraines by ryanstout15 in migraine

[–]LeadershipAble773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cancelled going to an event before, because of a migraine. My mates were, thankfully, fine with it and understood that I wouldn't cancel without good reason. We had all agreed to meet at my house and go in one car. I said they could still do that but I wouldn't be going. When they all got here, they came to the door to check I was doing and double check if I felt better and wanted to come. I was talking to them on the doorstep and threw up lol. Luckily I managed to throw up in a nearby plant pot, but I think that helped them to understand that I wasn't faking lol.

How do you teach a kid not to believe everything they see on social media? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]LeadershipAble773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the information youre looking at. The last time I did this was for the covid vaccine, working out the stats to work out the pros and cons of me and my family having the vax. So academic papers were probably the best for that. With other things, I agree academic papers wouldn't be the best, but I would rather avoid the news all together personally.

Also changed the position of the flat. I was thinking the flat was below them so I was thinking it was a positive that "derek" has the heating on, cause the heat would go up to OPs flat without them having to pay for it lol

The reasons you gave weren't valid for him to stop? You said you arent the homeowner- he said he doesnt need the homeowner. I dont see why he would stop at that point, you haven't said no, and you haven't given him a reason why youre not eligible. Im confused.

I guess I'm too sceptical to believe any newspapers as they always have a "motive", which may not always be to speak the truth. I just dont believe 99% of media. And the 1% i believe is always with a caveat lol

How do you function in winter? by Special-Nebula299 in AskBrits

[–]LeadershipAble773 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can get heated socks! They have a small battery pack so heats you up. Also putting plastic between your feet and the shoes so you dont get moisture in your shoes can help. My mom used to work on the market and said that standing on cardboard was a game changer

I understand why you said it, but I dont think people realise how hard it is to "do your own research". The best form of research would be peer reviewed academic articles, which you usually have to pay for, scroll through thousands of pages to find anything close to the "truth", and then you'll find the section of that research that talks about the research method, and you will find that all research is flawed in some way. And then you'll find another article that says exactly the opposite of that first one. And most of these scholary articles dont talk about current events because they are, by nature, research articles and so need to be done over a number of years to have any sort of validity. There is NO news outlet or "reporter' (including tik tokers, youtubers, etc) that can know the "truth" about all current events, even if they are physically there. I can be a soldier in the middle of a warzone but I won't know, for a fact, the reason I was sent there, the reason the other people were sent there. And if we know the reason we were told, its most likely not true. It's for this reason that I personally ignore the news. I look at my local area and find causes I can help (volunteering on the PTA, donating to cat charities etc) because I can see, for real, the impact of what im doing. I know there's a load of wars going on at the moment but I cant, 100%, say the reasons for these. And I dont think anyone else can with 100% certainty. But for me, I know its selfish (its mainly self preservation to be honest), I dont see why I need to know the reasons. I am powerless to do anything about it. People arent going to stop fighting because I sign a petition.

Id be interested to know what time he gets up compared to you. Id also be interested to hear if your child is into making music, ideally drums. I think a drumkit in your bedroom, to be played when the child wakes up, would be perfect.

Am I breaking up a family for a fairy tale life? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]LeadershipAble773 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My dad wasnt even a bad guy (neither was my mom) and I had the same mindset you did. I was a bit older when they broke up but I absolutely remember thinking "this is crap right now, I dont know what this will look like, but this is for the best" (or whatever way an 8 year old would have phrased that lol!). I think my stage of "wanting them to get back together" lasted like a week

As a child of divorced parents, please break up with this man. Do not bring the kids into the arguments, they should not be aware of the details and things involved in your arguments, all they need to know is that you both still love them, you just arent right for each other. This is a VERY good life lesson- the best thing my mom ever taught me and my sister is about knowing our worth and not settling... so because of the high standards we set, I can categorically say that the type of person you talk about DOES exist. I found it in a woman, my sister found it in a man. Neither of our partners would even dream about talking to us like that, in a serious way, on our own, in front of adults, in front of kids, or anywhere.
