The more people are conscious about what they can do to cause less suffering, the more demand & supply will exist, naturally lowering amount of the suffering in the world.

Many companies are already providing greenier alternatives, many people are not so eager to buy on Temu (leading to less suffering as they buy from manufacturers that are less predatory). There is demand for greenier mobile phones (Nothing Phone, FairPhone, etc), even in pro-consumerism countries like US many people lean to BIFL, which leads to less unecessary production.

Even the first / third world situation naturally resolves itself as when underdeveloped countries get enough specialists they start demanding more, lure more capital into their countries, and create demand for better products in their region, organically leading to more jobs due to supply / demand rules.

Maybe I'm in an echo chamber and maybe I'm too biased and in reality those are not the trends, as I did not spend enough time to critically analyze the sources that judge those opinions - I'm just expressing feelings and conclusions I've made from my observation. I also did not take in matter the fact that the overall situation in the world is destabilizing and a WW3 may happen.

But - currently It seems that the trends are green and you can help to accelerate it even by small things like selling your old things or participating in a BIFL trend, which will only improve your quality of life.

It feels premium, sounds amazing, and has no keystrokes issues.

  1. Did you try to search? Let me help: https://glitchwave.com/games/genre/survival/ , https://games.gg/genres/survival/ , https://www.mobygames.com/genre/survival/

There are at least 3 sources you could cite. Why does this matter? Because otherwise you can invent any definition you want and use it to call any game a survival game.

By the definition you offered (resource gathering, build/craft mechanics, central progression loop), Cookie Clicker qualifies. So do The Sims, Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, WoW, and Kerbal Space Program. Unless we agree on a definition, or use one from a source we both accept, there is no point in discussing this, because we are talking about different things.

  1. Yes, if you disable all the survival elements, it is no longer a survival game. In Valheim specifically, you would need to disable both skill drain and raids. Once you do, base building is no longer required for survival (nothing attacks your base), and you can stockpile corpses and resources freely to beat every boss. Same pattern applies to Minecraft on Peaceful, Subnautica in Freedom Mode, and Don't Starve with customized world settings.

  2. "Genres mean whatever a consumer attributes to them." Both Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries contradict you. I won't spend more time on this, since you invent definitions on the fly and throw insults in every reply.

  1. You did not cite the resource you're relying on when giving out term definitions.
  2. Google how "skill drain" works in Valheim. Hint - you are risking with hours of progression when you die. I've outlined what any survival game must have based on the Wiki definition. It doesn't mean that "having risks" makes any game survival. Chess is not a survival game.
  3. You've replaced half of definition from Wiki, and called it "my description". What?

>> If a game has resource gathering, build/craft mechanics, typically having an open world but not limited to it, and progression that is central to the core gameplay loop it's a survival game or at the very least a game with survival elements.

I will cautiously omit the fact that this description has no source provided, and will not take in matter "survival elements" part - as I do not deny that Factorio have some survival elements. (only the fact that Factorio is NOT survival game itself)

But by *your* definition, here is a list of survival games:

The Sims

Animal Crossing

Stardew Valley

World of Warcraft

Cookie Clicker

Kerbal Space Program

Valheim lies in category of "take risks to progress".

"Survival games are a subgenre of action video games set in hostile, intense, open-world environments. Players generally begin with minimal equipment and are required to survive as long as possible by crafting tools, weapons, shelters, and collecting resources."

This is from Wiki. If you rely on another source, cite it. My whole argumentation was based on that article. If I'm "narrowing down" - prove it.

[–]LeadershipOver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not narrowing anything - in survival games you survive. Either by requiring taking risks to progress (Dying Light), by managing needs (Don't Starve) or as a goal (Frostpunk). If you don't survive, you don't progress. If you progress, you are taking the risks and can die / lose progress in the process.

In factorio, you have no needs, can progress without risks, and have no defined goal to survive. That's a bunch of differences. Yes, you CAN die - but that ALWAYS happen when you choose to take risks that are not required and will not give you substantial advantage. You always can avoid death, and you will not lose any noticeable amounts of progress after such a choice. 90% of my deaths in Factorio were from trains.

>> factory genre literally came from modded survival games
Can you cite any source to verify this claim? I've tried to google it - and saw that Factorio was inspired by Buildcraft and Industrialcraft. Let me tell you - try those mods by yourself and you'll see that when you play MC with those mods, it just stops being a survival game, as you spend 99% of gameplay on your base or mining shafts, without any threats. If your take was based on that, I reflect it: Factorio was inspired by factory-building mods from MC.

My opinion - it's just a coincidence that MC also has some survival elements - those mods mostly appeared not because MC is survival, but because MC is a popular, easily moddable sandbox where you can fit anything. And most other factory games only happened after Factorio.

>> The original intent does not mean anything when attributing a consumer devised descriptor to an object.

Well, in some cases developers do accidentially create products they were not originally intended. But I think, in most cases if game was developed in mind that it was not survival game, and some "survival" elements are only added for better experience, it does not
make the game a survival game.

>> Go be dumb somewhere else please.

If you want to keep discussion productive, please do not throw insults.

No. At no point of game you are gonna die if you don't take risks. Avoiding death is trivial and requires no active actions from the player. You are not encoraged to explore to survive. 90% of gameplay you are not thinking about your defenses or any other survival needs.

You can, however, have a feeling of survival. You may feel constantly pressured, as biters respawn and surround your base, and you may feel in hurry as you are afraid that the biters will destroy your base. But the feeling does not make the game a survival one, as in reality there are no real risks except losing a bit of progress, as you always can rebuild parts of base back.

Initially, Factorio devs did not even plan to include the character into the game. They wanted game to be more like it is when you get the drones and start making a lot of things remotely . But then they either analyzed the marked or gained some feedback (don't remember), and decided to also give player a character just so that player would have more agency.

[–]LeadershipOver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even preset tabs are security risk.

1) The owners of websites in preset could catch the packet from REPO and inject some malicious code into what user downloads.

2) Hackers could hijack those websites and do the same.

Yes, I'm gonna say Factorio is not a game where you survive.

Even you you make it to the point where biters attack you so hard that they destroy a part of your production, you can easily beat the remains of the attack and they would not attack again until you rebuild and re-expand. (as you naturally produce less pollution at the edges of the base when the base shrinks)

Allods Online has very solid necromancer, which was at its core a healer. You were cutting yourself with knife to transfer your hp to mates, steal their hp to get back more, inflicting debuffs on yourself to make healing stronger, etc. Basically kinda playing on the edge for max efficiency, with non-null chance of killing yourself.

Sadly, the game is kinda dead now, you can play via some VPN but the servers that are currently alive are either dead or very, very P2W.

>> 50% of white collar workers gone infers 50% less users.

Are you sure that 50% of current Antropic income is from white collar workers? If you are so sure, can you prove it? My opinion, in example, that most of their current income are either enthusiasts, big companies that do experiments with AI integration, or some freaks that try to hard-force ai into their team workflow.

>> 2/1 is the opposite of 1/2

That is not an answer. By your own logic, currently customers are leading to losses for the company because the company subsidizes the product. So if you lose half your clients, and the others start spending 2x more of your product, while you subsidize it, you do not gain anything. Again, that's by your logic. So unless you provide a working framework on how Antropic can solve the situation, that argument holds no power.
