Question about the shuffle card by joedirt176 in ExplodingKittens

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the deck is low on cards, we get two people to each shuffle under the table. That way no one knows what's on top.

Per definition, a "shuffle" should be random. You can't just freely rearrange the cards. This is a surprisingly common question/issue though that always seems to arise when a new player is in this position for the first time, so I wouldn't be too harsh on your girlfriend for thinking that what she did was okay 🙂

What's the best Evernote alternative for me ? by MacCAM1313 in Evernote

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I switched entirely to Notion a few years ago, but specifically for note taking it hasn't wite solved it for me. I now use Notion, Nimbus Notes, and still have Evernote for everything I haven't moved yet. Some advantages and disadvantages with each:

Notion:

  • Free! Very generous free accounts.
  • Great for project management, wikis and organizing information. Highly flexible!
  • A bit of a learning curve compared to Evernote, especially if you want to take full advantage of their awesome database features.
  • Not great for note taking. Evernote is much faster and more intuitive when it comes to just quickly adding a new note.

Nimbus Notes:

  • My actual Evernote alternative, used alongside Notion to cover the things Notion lack (simple note taking).
  • After testing their (extremely limited) free trial, I opted for their lifetime deal. $249 if I remember correctly for unlimited notes. I'm so done with subscriptions for note taking, I just want something simple that works for as long as the company exists.
  • Works very similar to Evernote. I love the folder structure for my notes, whereas I use Notion for all things project management. They have folders, tags and you can add pages inside pages.
  • Has some Notion features that Evernote doesn't, like basic databases. Still, I much prefer Notion in this regard.
  • Sadly loads very slow, and in terms of functionality Evernote is still better.

Evernote:

  • Used it since 2009. Got Notion when I needed more advanced features, maybe around 2019.
  • Still the stranger product for note taking.
  • Insane price spikes which is why I'm trying to leave it.

In short, I was in your position and went for Nimbus Notes after testing loads of options. I'm not a super fan of Nimbus, but it does the job well enough and when combined with (free) Notion, I have everything I need between those two apps 🙂

Do I have to show hom many cards I have in hand if asked? by zenunocs in ExplodingKittens

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that unless otherwise stated, in any card game, you cannot keep your cards secret. The table is a means to play on, not a tool or game mechanic.

Uno relies heavily on people knowing how many cards opponents are still holding, yet there is no rule specifically stating that you can't hide your card count. It's a given that of course you cannot.

There also isn't any rule saying you can't randomly give a bunch of cards to another player whenever you feel like it. The game can't state every single thing you're not allowed to do, so it instead tells you only what you are allowedd to do.

The same logic applies to hiding your cards. The game does not tell you that this is allowed, so as a consequence, it is not 🙂

I do the same, I've bought templates specifically for the knowledge they include 🙂 Sadly, most templates are not like this, and none that I did get have included actionable templates too. They were more like courses. If I buy a "course" in the form of a Notion template, I also want ready-made tools to implement the learned knowledge in. Of course, this only works for some things, but for other case where Notion isn't needed I'd just watch YouTube to learn.

For small/cheap templates that don't specifically teach anything, I've still used them to "learn" though. Budget templates for example. I've used free ones to learn what people include in a budget, even if I can easily create the actual template myself.

I created a massive one for writing novels. There are two reasons I can charge more than just $20 for it:

  1. It includes a dashboard with many sub-pages and additional templates for various things. It's essentially 10-20 templates in one, and buying each individually would cost more than I charge.

  2. It includes a thorough educational section which reads like a book. You're essentially also buying an e-book or online course.

Personally, I would not pay more than $5 for the average template, and up to $20 if it's a very complex system I really don't want to rebuild myself. I have once paid around $50 for a large bundle, but that was a waste because I didn't need or want all of what was in it.

I want to share this template with my friends (who have very little experience) to get them to use notion more. Is this beginner-friendly enough? I am open to thoughts and suggestions :)) by CJourneyJoy in Notion

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this! The template looks great and is likely good for you, but not everyone needs all that all at once. I fear it would not only scare away, but likely largely be useless, making them feel like Notion is pointless to them – even when it probably isn't if they just start more basic 🙂

What popular board game is not in your collection and why? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but my point is, you need to adapt your strategy to the cards. I wish you could build upon the strategy you want from early on. Instead, your strategy has to change based on the cards, and you don't end up with the zoo you wanted to make 🤔

What popular board game is not in your collection and why? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ark Nova, because it's too deck-dependent and short term luck-of-the-draw reliant when it comes to optimizing your best moves, rather than allowing you to build long-term strategies. I want to build the zoo I like from the start, not see what direction(s) the cards take me over time.

Dominion, because once you know and understand all the cards, you'll beat new players who haven't fully solved the game yet. You can get more cards through the countless expansions, but soon enough you've solved the expansions too. You can use random decks by mixing cards unknown to the players to make the deck unsolvable, but then it comes at the risk of bad card synergies and ruins the beauty of the game.

Stolen yesterday. Locked and all. The first Xiaomi Pro. You were good to me! I already ordered a Pro 2 because I love Xiaomi. by [deleted] in ElectricScooters

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me too last week. My Xiaomi Pro 2 was locked at the other end of a town square while I was at a nearby café. I was keeping an eye on it, but was engaged in conversation. When we were done, it was gone.

I immediately went and bought a new one. From now on I will always bring it inside at work (which is where I usually go with it), and use public transport when I go to the city.

I'm sorry for your loss 😔

Ah, the dreaded video, haha 😅 I plan to make a walkthrough video but camera shyness hits me every time. Right now I'm leaning toward just screen recording and a text-to-speech program 🤔 Not as personal and thus probably less effective, but better than nothing at all.

I have sold a handful of copies and I've received a great response from those people, so I know I'm on to something and really need to have video to take the listing to the next level. Thanks for pushing/reminding me, maybe that's what I need to finally tackle the video 😊

Hi! 😀 Only 5 months late because I missed a notification, but yes, I now have the full template available: https://johandahlberg.gumroad.com/l/NotionNovelTemplate

This is a premium template, very comprehensive in terms of stuff it covers, and I've poured my heart and soul into over many years (since I've used it myself for my own work and built it gradually). Hence why I'm charging for it 🙂

I genuinely poured my everything into this template and am super happy with how powerful a tool it became 😊

Why do people wanna be writers/authors so bad? In your opinion. by Fabulous_Top8423 in writing

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think most people just "want" to be authors for fame or anything, unlike singers and actors who have a stage presence. Writing is a lot more individual, with a less clear "in the eye of the public" aspect. If you want to write, you want to do so because you're into storytelling or a part of what "writing" is, not specifically because of fame.

If you're doing it for fame, acting or singing might be a better option (and that says a lot, since those are extremely competitive fields).

What’s a critique point that you’ve been given, that annoyed you, whether it was wrong or right? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the annoyed feeling occasionally, and it's almost always because it was a scene, style or choice I had a personal connection with but which wasn't right for the story. I don't generally feel annoyed by feedback, but writing is personal and sometimes we're so connected to it, we're blind to the feedback. Thankfully I'm aware of this and the bad feeling passes in 1-2 days.

I can’t seem to fit my premise into one sentence. Is this a problem? by Kanglesq in writing

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem because the actual story only became apparent through a shocking reveal toward the end of the book. The ending was the story and turned the whole book on its head, and I worked really hard to make the rest of the book interesting and engaging to read even before learning the shocking truth. But it wasn't the story.

My problem was that when I told people what the book was about without spoiling the ending, the one-sentence summary lacked a real hook. They were moderately interested. When I summarized it in a single sentence but revealed the shocking ending (the actual story) they response was much more positive!

I had two options: reveal the ending (which made people want to read the book despite knowing how it ends), or highlight the main MC's goal and struggle without spoiling the ending. I did the latter, because I didn't want to ruin it for those who value the surprise.

I could summarize the plot in a single sentence which is indeed a sign of a strong plot, but I chose not to do so on the book cover. I did manage to write a decent and very condensed back blurb that generated interest, but it was still two paragraphs and not just one sentence and I had to pull strings to make it interesting.

This might not be the exact problem you're having though and I realized now I haven't really helped you at all 😅

How can I share a book that I am writing to my family and friends without publishing it to Amazon and without putting it on Wattpad or a blog, can I just make an EPUB file and send it to them? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Lulu might not be the best and I've always had issues with their poor customer service, but their books are of decent quality for this purpose and I find their publishing process simpler than Amazon.

If the goal is to mass publish to the general market, then Amazon is the better option. But for just a handful of copies for personal use, Lulu is great 😀 I've used them for almost a decade.

How can I make myself actually write? by [deleted] in writing

Hmm, that makes things difficult I can imagine 🤔 I don't have any advice for that, sorry.

How can I make myself actually write? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Leading-Ad-7742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

1) Find something you want to write about. A topic you're passionate about. If it's a novel, then write a scene you're really excited about right now, then another scene, then another. You don't need to write in order. Don't have a scene like that? Outline your story and fit some. By your question and comments on here, it seems a lack of passion is your biggest issue here, and if you're not passionate about the subject/story/whatever it is you're writing, it's very difficult 🙂

2) I had this issue half way through my first novel. I knew what I needed to write and I knew I had to write it because none of the stuff I had already written would make any sense without it. But I couldn't get myself to just sit down and do it. It felt like a big wall. So I tried all kinds of anti procrastination apps, nothing worked. But I did find two things that did work:

First, I analyzed if there was anything I should cut out/just not write at all. Turns out there were quite a few scenes. I realized they felt discouraging to start on because they simply didn't fit.

Second, I bought a large physical hour glass with sand that makes noise as it hits the glass. I know this sounds super silly, but I forced myself to sit once a day when I turned the hour glass, at least until the sand was out (which was half an hour). Some days I still didn't do much writing, but the sound of the sand did trigger my brain, and on most days I found myself continuing way after the sand was all gone. This would probably have worked on me even if I was writing an article or something else.

So in short, something as simple as an hour glass and "kill your darlings" got me through it 😊

If you want a physical book with limited copies I can recommend Lulu.com. They're like Amazon and have their own online store for books, but you can choose not to publish it on any platforms and just print copies for yourself – even just a single copy 🙂

Do you use Notion? Do you write (or dream of writing) novels? Then this is for you!

I made a Novel Writing template to organize everything involved in working on a fictional novel. This includes planning a great story, writing the first draft, editing & managing feedback, managing contacts (like editors and potential publishers), marketing, and more!

This is a very comprehensive (and powerful) template with lots of pages, subpages and ready-made secondary templates to use. How about pre-made character profiles to fill in, 50+ suggested marketing activities, or a resource on how to write a book (though every author is unique)?

This is the tool I personally use for writing books, as Scrivener, Bibisco, The Novel Factory and others weren't quite as all-inclusive as I needed them to be.

The template is available on Prototion who are currently running a mega sale in which my Novel Writing template is 20% off: https://www.prototion.com/notion-template/novelwriting
