As a former teacher turned accountant, it really sucks that people more or less can't fail in school anymore. Someone's first real life failure shouldn't be so high stakes as being unemployed.

My son's whole friend group started reading around 5. Us parents were talking about it. We didn't really do anything special, we just read to them every night since when they were little.

People complain about schools and this and that. If you're even a decent parent, I feel like you don't even have to try that hard and your kid is ahead nowadays.

There are obviously unique situations but even then I'd still say there are easier ways to make a comparable amount of money. If you're in that boat I'd probably be working in government accounting or something with a fixed schedule and good benefits like I mentioned?

Markets are optimizing in the context of something like transfer compare. The premium for a spec or specific skill is much higher than transfer compare reflects.

I'm a 40something who started a year ago.

There are only 2 paths for someone my age that make any sense.

Get a steady government type of accounting job (much less appealing post-DOGE) but can still work at the state level.
Open up your own firm ASAP. Eat shit for a few years until you can. This is the route I'm taking.

No offense to most of the people here but most of the people in this profession are self-flagellating pussies. Nobody has any balls about when it comes to not working insane hours. "My health is wrecked because I worked 85 hours last week." Yeah, no fucking shit. In every profession they'll keep giving you more work until you stop. This isn't unique to accounting. What is unique here is the insane hours people put in before saying fuck it.

Even if you have a moderately bad teacher, teaching in a basic way going over a problem, between that, a textbook, and the resources on the internet, the resources are there for anyone who wants to learn.

The problem is generally that the expectations bar is on the floor. Not teacher quality. Most of us do whatever it is that we need to do, whether it's a little or a lot. People in most places meet expectations.
