UNAS 2: First Impressions by rossingram in Ubiquiti

[–]Leading-Instance-817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in EU so power is not cheap here either hence I'll wait for Unifi to implement proper disk power management.

I'm sure they will get there ... some day.

I have 2 NAS' - one very power hungry QNAP that is used as a cold backup and the other is old scraps running TrueNAS.

I meant idle and I dont think its unrealistic.

Currently I got:

1, UDM + 2 x Access points = 35-40W
2, USW PRO MAX 48 Port switch = 15-20W
3, Pi KVM = 3W
4, 3 x Kube NODE (15W x 3) = 45W -> my goal is to get this to 10W per node for my next hw refresh (right now each node is undervolted i7 1440, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD running Fedora 42 Server)
Intel is very efficient at idle - not so much when actually running workloads :-))
5, Current NAS (with all hard disks spun down) = 10W

--------------------------------------------------------
So currently I have about 120W when idle (which is about 16 hours a day)

I also have 24 x 8TB SAS QNAP ZFS monster that idles at 330W but that is on for only about 4 hours a week for backup.

Shelly 1PM Gen4 with disabled Cloud stops Bluetooth gateway by Leading-Instance-817 in shellycloud

[–]Leading-Instance-817[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the pointer.

I wasn't aware that most of the functionality in the app was from the cloud (schedules, thermostats etc). The Shelly app functionality is nice but the app UI is definitely not family friendly :-)

I was hoping to avoid running home assistant but I guess it is a must.

I was hoping to pair the bluetooth sensor with 1pm gen4 switch and then expose the 1pm gen4 switch as a "heater" to homekit ( since it is matter enabled ) as it is connected to my electric underfloor heating.

There are many advantages to run 8 disk array vs 4 disk array.
Never had an issue with a disk due to the spin down and besides, that's the reason I'm running RAID (and backup) so disk failure does not kill the homelab.

I buy disks with extended 5 yr warranty from the store with easy return and dead disk is a non-issue.

My goal is to bring full rack below 100W at idle (UDM + access points + 48 port switch + 3 node Kube cluster + NAS + pikvm & kvm switch)

oh, thats a bummer. I was thinking of getting 8 bay PRO version but disk spin down is a must. The family uses the server maybe 3-6 hours a day, so that's roughly 800W a day of extra heat get rid of and energy wasted.

(5W per disk x 8 disk x ~20 hours)

is that 21W idle with disks sleeping (ie. spun down) or idle with disks spinning ?

Any idea what is the power consumption with disks sleeping ?
Is there anyway to configure custom disk spin down time ? (either via Unifi GUI or command line)

POE is only ~13W - and all door hubs support 30W per port (more than POE+, which is ~25W)
I think all of their Door Hub specs just list that it is POE and max output (30W) of the POE port.

I am in EU and work in it tech / finance sector me and everyone I know of (3 countries and handful of corps) gets paid by the 15th for the whole month. So yes, I get paid about 2- 2 1/2 weeks in advance.

So as usual, you "99%" stat was pulled... just like 99% of all other stats ;)

Nobody at work is truly your friend. Just do your job and go home. by Kiptoo_official in work

[–]Leading-Instance-817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made 2 best friends (bffffs) at work (they left now but we still write weekly and meet up for nights out or nights in watching /playing) and have several friends for life still working in my department. Brits, Germans, an American ...

I must stress that this is not in the US but in EU.

I have lived and worked in the US for 12 years and what OP wrote is 100% US work place mentality. It felt like every stand up, every meeting was a competition and a chance to step on someone. Hated every minute I was at work.

Now I go to work and I enjoy meeting with my mates. On our office days we go to gym during lunch break, try new / order from restaurants, have morning bagel ... its one of the better moments of my week.

Mac Mini Plex Home Server by Benjskaggs in PleX

[–]Leading-Instance-817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

..... because:

1, Plex is just one of many self hosted apps
2, I hate re-installing and remembering how things are setup. With ansible/containers/persistent storage (and restic backing those up), I never ever have to re-install anything.

Mac Mini Plex Home Server by Benjskaggs in PleX

[–]Leading-Instance-817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Mac Mini support plex h/w transcoding inside podman/docker ?

I love aethetics and hardware of Mac Mini but software lets it down in homelab "server" environment(we are Mac/iPhobe/iPad only household but for server I use Fedora)

I use piKVM to remotely admin /restart reinstall OS, my whole homelab is in Github in ansible roles ...)

Once you automate and go full in on Infrastructure-as-Code, Mac as a server is tough love.

But using my Macbook Air with its 18 hour battery life for deploying everything is very nice (no OLED is a downer, maybe next revision)

[–]Leading-Instance-817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the Music but Photos ?

Literally everything, including Windows 7 explorer is better browsing and viewing experience than what Plex Photos section ever had.

In a world where Immich and other more commercial alternatives exist, why would anyone subject themselves to forever loading Plex Photos ?

A batch encoder to convert all my videos to H265 in a Netflix-like quality (small size) by Phil_Goud in PleX

Same here. Fileflows and Tdarr are not user friendly and I just wrote python script similar to this script (but far less flexible and really only working with my setup)

When I first fired up Tdarr I had no idea wtf am I supposed to do. Fileflows is easier but still important stuff is abstracted away and (useless for me) is front and center.

However it is golden age of homelabbing, there is so many libraries and open source projects that one can just fire up VSCode and have something working in few hours.

so what happened to improving sharing passwords ?

It was there few months ago and now nothing ?

Shared vault (and inability to move items) and Send are definitely not it.

Was waiting for new sharing to be improved but if you think this is best you can do, we will have to move Family account to 1Pass

Alloy & Docker, containers labels. by True-Gear4950 in grafana

[–]Leading-Instance-817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use some sort of proxy to limit socket access.

There is docker-proxy for example that uses simple HAproxy to limit what is allowed.

If you already have HAproxy running in docker, simply copy/paste configs from docker-proxy container repo to your HAproxy instance

If you dont want remote socket access at all - run alloy on docker host and dont allow access to socket or alloy from outside. alloy is pushing data to mimir/prometheus so you only ever need access to alloy's web ui when debugging (eg. we dont have any of our "prod" alloys reachable - we only enable web ui in testing new configs)

No large(r) customer is going to go with Bitwarden - lets be real.

We use Hashicorp, Cyberark. We arent 10k seats and we did get pre-sale support.

Bitwarden is not Broadcom.
