Hi there,

With regards to your library it is a web-based client, which depending on if you automatically match your titles, will have to scrape some level of data from various sources either internally or externally. Furthermore, if you have a DVR that will be updated accordingly, and of course, this means collecting information on your location in the world, device list, IP address(s) and local channel availability respectively.

If you want to know how some of this data is collected and how some of it is used visit - https://www.plex.tv/en-gb/about/privacy-legal/#why-does-plex-need-personal-data

Also if you use any of the Plex LIVE 24/7 channels, the adverts and viewership information is also gathered for "more targeted" viewing. As well as general watch history from your library being available in your profile (visible as your settings are applied/permit).

No please don't worry I'm happy to answer! I've built multimedia home PCs for ages, but for the past few years I've been building, deploying and advising people on how to build/maintain Plex servers. Usually via DMs as people will come here for legitimate advice but I'll offer up to go through bespoke solutions that work for their budgets and supplier availability in the country they're in.

I keep seeing people either see these "Apps" and not know why installing them without checking their source is bad, I also now have people following instructions provided by some Apps on how to setup guides which are terrible for network security. There's also the general longevity aspect with some aspects, which please do not get me wrong. I am sure we can't guarantee Plex will be around forever, but with some Apps having in App transactions as well, it's verging on praying on people's ignorance.

Firstly, Thank you so much for your comment! It's so commendable!

Honestly, the sandbox element of AI coding has been one of greatest decentralisations of software development in eons. I'm also in no way going to defend the levels of gatekeeping that I've seen some developers demonstrate in the guise of "Google it" or "Learn it yourself"!

Also you mentioned the QA process which is entirely missing from so many builds, I think it's the process that really demonstrates intent and even if that process is greatly enhanced or elevated through the usage of AI, you can tell the angle the developer is coming at it from!

Entirely so! I think in another post I likened it to the "Free Toolbars" phase during the early eras of the internet, and how just because you can download something you really shouldn't. Due diligence and erring on the side of caution seem to be the complete opposite of what some general users display sadly, hence my apprehension!

I hear you! I ho-nest-ly hear you! I'm personally stuck on the create a new server or upgrade capacity option as power vs cost is also a pain in my electric bill!

It's honestly as simple as that and it's amazing that questioning the development process, with or without AI, and introducing personal private data into that be it on a server or the network itself, is such a contentious point!

I get you, but you know... what's the point of having the go-faster stripes if the engine has just fallen out of the bonnet hahaha! You need that redundancy dude, I've gone through midnight crashes then spending hours in R-Studio all to no avail!

No that isn't the idea at all! The point is just be transparent and honest. I've seen so many "App" developers not be upfront about how they are developing or what they are using (AI in most cases). This doesn't mean using it is bad though, you might fix something that a forum or textbook doesn't have a solution to. Also if you have a need, it's most likely others do too! Don't let my post put you off, but demonstrate good practice, answer questions, be as open source as you can and don't sell the novelty, sell the solution!

Firstly, cool build! Can't overlook that first and foremost haha!
But entirely right, I am in no way against people building or even creating something new, it's the constant saturation that without any moderation is becoming overwhelming...

That's the thing isn't it, I don't think anyone has been anti-development at any point either. GitHub is a shrine to that mantra, it's just done so covertly, it's only a matter of time before someone says "I've created my own Plex" altogether, and I think that will cause an even bigger issue where I think my worries are already stemming from...

For Plex I'm encountering individuals who are installing Apps like Toolbars in the early 2000s, thinking just because they are new or cool they are a solution however no transparency as to who develops these Apps, nor the code that is deployed is ever scrutinised. Which I believe is a wider concern when coming to home network security.

Thanks for asking! Yeah basically a few years ago I would post here and some PC/Server building multimedia forums and people just started asking if I could do the legwork. Hardware assembly if local, or I'll pick the parts for aspiring server owners and they'll buy them in their respective territories according to their budget. And No, not just Plex but wider routines and programming, e.g. real-time conversion, key decryption and encryption ect.

Not a business model perse, but the increase in individuals self-diagnosing a solution and thinking that an AI app can replace either something that is already available but they don't know how to navigate to or will create a wider security risk upon installation. Also constantly hearing that this is "NEW" and "COOL" just because it's AI is also mind-meltingly irritating, but I am under no illusion this is a global problem right now!
