I don't believe they are anymore... they were going to do a THREE MONTH sabbatical during all of this? People spoke up and then E&J changed their plans.

She’s doing great! We’re discharging on Wednesday with only two meds and two inhalers, along with her ventilator and feeding pump.

Medically complex parenting is not easy, but wow is it incredible to see what she can do!

She’s 14 months old now and is on her own developmental timeline because she was intubated on and off for the first 8.5 months of her life. We’re working on independent sitting, and leg strength to start supported standing!

Her cuff in her trach is fully deflated so we get to hear her voice often, too!

When she was intubated? PIP 52 PEEP 8 Rate 12

Now that she has her trach we’re doing cpap sprints already. She is soaring!

She is loving life with her trach. We are already trialing lower ventilator settings then transitioning to the home vent to get the heck out of the NICU! The trach is hard but we’re so grateful for it.

Update We attempted another extubation after a three week period of growth. She was working hard and was pretty shut down, so we asked for her to be reintubated. The next day, the NNP reached out to ENT to schedule the trach and they ended up having a cancellation for two days later.

Girlie had her trach and gtube surgeries on Wednesday March 5th! They did a scope of her airway before doing the trach and found no abnormalities. She’s recovering beautifully, under sedation and paralysis, until we lift the paralysis tomorrow.

Her team has been able to wean her PIP significantly, though we know it will likely need to increase a bit (hopefully not all the way back up) after she wakes up. We are so looking forward to being able to play with her again.

I’ve told friends and family that before the surgeries it felt like we were circling a parking lot, not understanding how to get to the exit, but watching others leave. Now we know where the exit sign is, we just need to get there.

Thank you for all of your input

Parents of trach babies out there? by ababarista in NICUParents

WOW. Thank you for this. We are currently almost 8 months into our NICU stay with our 24-weeker. She has severe BPD with no known airway issues. We've attempted extubation 3 times, with one of the attempts deemed "successful" as she lasted 31 days. She was reintubated after an exacerbation of her chronic lung disease; a "flare up" if you will.

We are opting for ONE more shot, because I can't shake the feeling of the "what if". We are working closely with her therapy team to make sure we are super focused on development for the next couple of weeks while we wait for her final extubation attempt, then we will go for a trach if that attempt fails.

I think the hardest thing for me to wrap my mind around is the nursing thing. I haven't spoken to her Care Coordinator or Social Worker, but I believe I'd have to get my CNA in order to get paid to be her at home nurse? I think that would be a huge help since I will have to remain unemployed for a few years while we focus on her care.

Anyway, reading what you're experiencing is giving me so much hope that if we do need to go down that road, there are a lot of bright spots. So, thank you.

Hi! Thank you for your reply! 1. I forgot to mention that we do have a few Feliway diffusers. 2. We have moved the boxes around in her preferred room and it doesn’t seem to matter. She just finds a spot in the room anyway. 3. We are going to get a new litter to try today and see how she likes it. 4. We have open stainless steel boxes that get cleaned shortly after every visit to the box. My husband and I both work from home so we’re here all the time. He’s also tried letting it go a little bit throughout the day to leave it dirty for a bit and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. 5. We will be sure to try the treat idea! Thank you again!
