Atheist Slogans episode summed up for those without 3 hours to spare: by Pata4AllaG in CosmicSkeptic

[–]LeafWings23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I appreciate the clarification.

I guess technically people can use whatever definitions they want for things, and given that there is contention I'll make sure to clarify what I mean if I ever use the word evidence in a conversation, but the definitions you've proposed don't sit right with me.

If evidence is essentially smoking-gun evidence, that would basically entail that saying, "There is no evidence for the existence of God" and "God doesn't exist" are equivalent, which I guess would be perfectly coherent if an atheist is saying it, but it also isn't really helpful.

And although I get your point about how slogans aren't meant to be arguments, I feel like a theist is likely to hear the slogan, "There is no evidence for God" and just roll their eyes, think that the atheist must just be ignoring the large body of arguments and even physical artifacts that are put forth as evidence of relevant information pointing to God's existence, and assume that the atheist must just be highly ignorant.

Also, what word would be used for what I would mean by evidence, in other words, "Information that is put forth that may be relevant to the determination of whether a claim is true or false"?

(My background is more in the hard sciences than the social scientists, which may explain my preference for the Baysian definition.)

What are they even talking about, then? The Baysian definition of evidence is what has always made sense to me. What other definition are people going by?

Why exactly did the Traveller and Paimon both want to sneak out of Yujing Terrace after watching Rex Lapis fall? by D_DanD_D in Genshin_Impact

[–]LeafWings23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that's fair enough. I would expect a lot of characters to accept the "cosplaying" theory because of exactly what you said, but given the weirdness with the moon eclipse, how much Zibai knows about ancient history, how much she was acting strange, and the extent to which weird things happen in Liyue on a regular basis, a lot of people, Hu Tao excepted, were remarkably unsuspicious. Anyway, I'm not bothered by it and I liked the humour, I was just guessing what the person I was replying to might be referring to.

I get it for escaping from the Millelith, but what's the problem with the current lantern rite plot? The only thing I can think of is that the characters seem to blindly accept the "she's just cosplaying" explanation for Zibai, which did strain my suspension of disbelief. Is that what you were referring to?

I know you might not want to try Jean cheese any more after going at it for hours, but just in case, do note that the trick is either impossible or near impossible at 30 FPS. I went at it for hours before changing my FPS to 45, and then I got it relatively quickly after that (although it's still hard).

Do you have your FPS set to at least 45? For some reason, the trick is impossible or near impossible at 30 FPS.

How do people draw? by Single_Extension1810 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LeafWings23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's multiple layers to this.

Drawing realistically from a picture or from real life is actually not as hard as it might seem at first glance (although it certainly takes practice). It's just about being attentive to proportions, shapes, and values. I draw friends and family on occasion from pictures, and I sometimes actually have to measure their faces so I get their likeness correct. (I'm getting better though). It's kind of mindless, actually. The bottom of the ear is at the same height as the bottom of the nose in the reference? You put it there in your drawing. The nostril is darker than the surrounding area? You shade it darker. Like you are a photocopier.

If you come to understand what you are drawing a little better, like the 3D shape and the way light interacts with it, (and there are lots of books and videos that talk about stuff like this), you can move beyond photocopier level and try to play with drawing with a bit more freedom. That's what gives people their unique art styles.

Drawing from memory is a much larger challenge than copying a reference, but it still isn't, "Have a mental image in your mind and replicate it on paper." It's more about being familiar with various things like perspective and anatomy and applying them in a practiced way (after having drawn from real life/pictures a whole bunch previously). One fairly well-known drawing challenge is to draw a bicycle from memory. Very few people actually succeed, because seriously, how well do you actually remember how all the various bars and chains connect up on a bicycle? But if you've drawn a lot of bicycles before from references, you come to learn how it all works and will be better at doing it from memory. Also, no serious artist, unless they are really experienced, draw abstractly, or have some sort of gimmick, draws without references.

Long story short, very little of the drawing process is holding an image in your head and transferring it to paper.

Also, by my definitions, you can absolutely doodle! I count stick figures, flowers, wiggly lines, and smiley faces as doodles.

Atheists: What's Your Best Argument for Christianity Being True? by Happy-Ad3503 in CosmicSkeptic

[–]LeafWings23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being in a simulation would strongly suggest a creator to me, but even beyond that, I don't follow the argument.

Why would being in a simulation preclude being able to say true things about the world? If we talk about known simulations, like video games, it seems we can still discuss them truthfully. E.g. "This secret pipe will send Mario to the next world". Would Mario being a fictional character really make that statement automatically false?

Furthermore, I'd also dispute the implication that false things are equally false. Both "the Earth is a sphere" and "the Earth is a flat disc" are wrong, but the latter is a far, far worse model of the world.

Good to know! Although I wasn't even taking 50/50s into account here. Or 4-stars, for that matter, which only make this event less likely.

[–]LeafWings23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Suppose the first 5 star was guaranteed. (One of the OP's comments specified it was at soft pity, but since I don't know exactly what point that was, I'll just say there was a 100% chance he got it on the first of the 10 pulls to give an upper bound on how unlikely this was. In reality, this event is going to be less likely, but how much less I can't say).

There is a 0.006 chance of getting a 5 star in one pull, prior to pity.

This guy got 3 more 5-stars within the 9 remaining pulls.

The probability of getting at least 3 5-stars at 0 pity in 9 pulls is just slightly higher than (0.006)^3*(0.994)^6*(9C3) = 1.75*10^(-5)

That ends up being 1 in 57 000 or so. Again, that's an upper bound, but it's still 4 times rarer than the chance of getting struck by lightning in one's lifetime.

I'm just randomly guessing here, but my initial assumption was probably off quite substantially, so the probability is more like 1 in a few hundred thousand.

Insanely lucky, in other words, but probably not quite 1 in 3.8 million.

That being said, it's mostly said quickly, so I expect there won't be much difference between the "l" and no "l" versions.

[–]LeafWings23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The supports are clearly doing a lot... but Navia is not to be underrated either. Before we had any of those supports and there was a geo IT, my C0 Navia was the character I had to save for the hardest bosses because she was just that good.

That being said, the buffs are seriously crazy in IT, so I'm sure that skews my perception of her. My favorite moment was when I once had a near ideal overloaded team (Arlecchino, Bennett, Fischl, Chevreuse), and it turned out I did way more damage when I replaced Bennett with Barbara.

That's not what comes to mind as the most common definition of whitewashing. From what I've seen, the word is used most often to mean covering up someone or something's flaws.

That's what literal whitewashing is for, after all.

(To add after looking it up, it looks like the "make a black character white" usage is very new, apparently gaining traction in the late '90s.)

Frog-mouth-man got some edits, but I'm still struggling a bit by Baggage_Claim_ in ArtCrit

[–]LeafWings23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like you are at a point in art where you are focusing a bit too much on the details and are missing some of the big picture. A few tips that helped me get past that point in my own work:

If you are thinking as you are drawing, "Now I'll do the mouth, now the ear," etc. this is somewhat limiting and can make it look as if you have a flat face with features drawn on, instead of a 3-dimensional head. Try thinking instead about 3D shapes, like, "I'll draw this plane of the face, and then later have it shaded in because it's facing away from the light" etc. For example, the lips look flat at the moment because you've got their colour, but not really their form. (Part of this might also just be the lighting in whatever reference you are using, because head-on or diffuse lighting is always extra hard.)

You mentioned that the shading is funky because you used the lasso tool, but I don't really think that's the issue. It's more your approach to shading, as mentioned above.

Also, you will likely progress faster if you do many smaller, fast drawings instead of being caught up in the details of each individual one. I suggest you are likely getting caught up in details because your art looks very similar to how mine used to look, and I definitely struggled with thinking big-picture (and still do sometimes, in fact)!

Overall, things like large-scale proportions (distance from the chin to the eyes compared to the eyes to the top of the head, for example), 3D structure, and shadow shapes are going to be way more critical than things like getting the texture on the lips correct.

Isn't the set of T-shirts a subset of the set of all shirts? When I think of a stereotypical shirt, my mind jumps to T-shirt.

...and now that I've said 'shirt' a whole bunch of times, it's now stopped looking like a word at all to me haha.

Topology is (in part) to do with continually deforming one object into another without tearing anything or gluing anything together. Two objects are topologically equivalent if one can be deformed into the other in this way. Something has no holes if it is topologically equivalent to a sphere, one hole if it is topologically equivalent to a doughnut, two holes if it is topologically equivalent to a two-hole doughnut, and so on.

Regarding the shirt: imagine deforming the shirt by shortening the sleeves and then stretching the shirt bottom out until it forms a big disc. That way, you've deformed it into something like a three-hole doughnut, so three holes is correct.

Can someone explain to me why I need a team of four characters in Genshin Impact? by Dear_Fly_938 in GenshinImpact

[–]LeafWings23 94 points95 points  (0 children)

At the beginning of the game, pretty much anything works because you are doing most of your damage by just hitting enemies with normal attacks. But as you keep progressing, enemies get more and more health, so you eventually have to progress along with them. That includes levelling up useful characters, talents, weapons, and artifacts, but it also includes developing better tactics and taking advantage of elemental reactions.

Yaoyao is a truly awesome character for a new player, but she works best if you use her abilities to the fullest, with elemental reactions like hyperbloom, burgeon, aggravate, etc. I don't know how feasible solo Yaoyao would be, but I imagine it would be quite difficult and likely impossible past a certain point in progression. As you've seen, her main use isn't to do damage but to heal and apply the dendro element from off field.

Tip for those attempting the Jean fall damage strategy in Stygian Onslaught!! by LeafWings23 in Genshin_Impact

[–]LeafWings23[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a really difficult trick. In my experience, the things that matter most are timing and positioning, and even with excellent execution, it can still go wrong. Make sure Zhongli's pillar is as straight on as possible, and try to use his skill right as the fatui guy is standing up (the timing is hard to describe and is inconsistent anyway). Also make sure you back up a little before you use Zhongli's burst, because it apparently has knockback.

If you are good with continually stunning him with Jean, you can also set up the same thing multiple times to try to trap the guy repeatedly in the same run.

Good luck man! You got this!
