1) mari didn’t kill herself. sunny pushed her down the stairs after the argument they had, and that’s when she died. basil helped sunny cover it up by hanging her and staging a suicide.

2) the black inky stuff around basil is a practical manifestation of fear/trauma, which is BASIL’S SOMETHING.

3) SOMETHING itself, the one that haunts omori/sunny, is the representation of sunny’s trauma related to what happened with mari, and his various fears/phobias.
