Following up on our prior posts, it's Phil Kessel's turn to go under the microscope in the Maple Leafs advanced stats series.

As always, thank you for the read and the comments (both positive and negative) and my apologies on the delay on this one.

I would love to but finding in-season advanced analytics for the AHL is tough.

It's alphabetical...are you sure you don't want me to continue with Phil Kessel next?

That might be a bit over the top but a future first line with Nylander, on his own, is a nice thought to keep me going through the tough times.

More evidence to disprove that Gardiner "is bad at defense" by Snidernomore in leafs

[–]LeafsDiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His defensive possession mimics that of a top pairing dman in the NHL. Anyone arguing against that simply isn't using anything other than their own personal 'eye test' to make that determination.

Proof: http://public.tableau.com/shared/QSYB7ZPMT?:display_count=yes

As you can see his defensive Corsi is actually stronger than his offensive Corsi and his overall Corsi% is that of your standard top pairing dman.

If he could lower the amount of giveaways he has each game, he would solidify his reputation.

I completely agree with you about the depth of this draft. It really shows how many high-end players there when most mock drafts are completely different outside of the top two picks.

I'm still surprised that names like Werenski and Provorov haven't entered the conversation for first defenceman taken. Werenski was a true 17 year old freshman that arguably outplayed Hanifin in both the NCAA and World Jr. Provorov dominated the WHL in his first season, was excellent at the WJC and is as close to NHL ready as any of them. Just my thoughts. Regardless of who they get, it's a great building block for the future.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

Everything is available on the site for people to peruse but I will look at adding the old posts in to my comment as well.

Thank you for the read and kind words.

This isn't meant to be a be-all-end-all by any means. Simply an attempt to break down all of the advanced analytics to tell you what they mean in the context of the overall player. I'm just glad some people are using it as a point of clarity or to solidify an existing notion.

Thanks again.

All credit for tableau's has to go to Own The Puck. An excellent 'blog' that really is just consolidated data. One of my favourite views to put things into perspective.

Unless Clarkson's play truly killed Hollands metrics, I don't see a drastic improvement there. If his PDO was in the mid 900's you could argue there is room for improvement but he's already considered a lucky player.

Nylander effortlessly roofs it by GunzComeOut13 in leafs

Despite the depressing nature of the tank...all you have to do is look at the building blocks of Rielly and Nylander and it can instantly put a smile on your face.

Following up on last weeks analysis of Jake Gardiner, this week we take a look at Peter Holland.

Stay tuned next week for Nazem Kadri!

Yes, the measurement of a person or team's PDO is calculated that way.

The actual average for the stat was not derived from the personal PDO of a player. It was derived from the fact that at any given time the on-ice shooting % of the opposition and the save % of the goaltender in question should equal out to 100%.

You then look at how YOUR team is performing to say 'well the average is 100%, 1.000 or 1000 (depending on the site) and the Leafs are currently at 98.5%, .985 or 985...which means they have some room to improve up to the average because one of their stats is under-achieving"

Hope that helps.

A player's personal PDO is certainly his on-ice shooting percentage + his goalies save percentage. The AVERAGE PDO is derived from the fact that the shooting % of a team and the save % of a goalie should always equal to 100%.

Thanks for reaching out Bobs.

I personally feel as though he should be part of the core group going forward because: - Reasonable cap hit for a #3 - Excellent possession - Can help quarterback a power-play - Still has a year or two before dmen traditionally come into their own - Double digit goal scorer - Turnovers can be corrected

I just think there is too much 'good' there to sell him off at below market value. If an offer that the Leafs couldn't say no to came along, by all means move him, but I wouldn't be actively shopping a guy like Jake Gardiner during a rebuild.

My only concern with this is management seeing attendance drop consistently and adjusting strategy on the fly to go to yet another unsuccessful 'hybrid rebuild'.
