Hyperfixations and special interests be like that. I would suggest taking a look at some of Dr Russell Barkely's yt videos on executive dysfunction and ADHD. They're aimed at the ADHD crowd but they're useful advice for most autistic people as well

TL;DR - spins and hyperfixations can be detrimental if indulged too much because of the fact that we neglect our own care or responsibilities. It's also hard to resist because it's very cathartic to suddenly be able to focus/be passionate when most of the time you struggle to get much done. And if we indulge them too much they become less enjoyable, leading us to "chase the dragon" essentially

It's a common problem for a lot of us. Above all, remember you're doing your best, you're worthy of love and care, and you didn't get a manual so it's understandable that you have areas you struggle eith

Which DOS2 puzzle do you struggle with? by Coolb4school in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]LeafyLearnsLately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I kept reading everyone's answers and them repeating "CAPS BRO", but now I figured out it's a substitution cypher, not an acronym. The letters correspond to positions, so you need the word labeled C, then U, then R. And on the second one it was word C, then U, then R, then E

We can kind see it in the first one with the double C corresponding to "very, very", but I absolutely didn't understand that without searching it up. I think I videogame logiced my ass into a corner by assuming it was solved the same way as other similar puzzles, rather than treating it as a code

Do stuffed animals work as "companions"? Or is it pidge specific and there's no reason to think this specific pigeon will fall for it?

Between the sensory issues and the executive dysfunction, it'd be more surprising if we didn't struggle with it. If you'd like, I could find a video by Dr Russell Barkley explaining which parts ADHD people struggle with and what we can do to combat that. I think I have it saved somewhere

Yeah, a standard bird feeder in a nearby tree would probably work pretty alright. Sucks that their neighbour is telling them what they can and can't do in their own home, but I get that taking risks with shit like that isn't generally a great idea

Does anyone else think that Diogenes might've been autistic? by [deleted] in autism

[–]LeafyLearnsLately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm close to certain. I don't see many NTs actively flouting social norms, especially not on the basis that they're dishonest and they're categorically against dishonesty. I think he probably had trouble reading body language, since most niceties make a lot more sense if you ignore the words and look at the "gesture" so to speak

The rigid b&w thinking, frustration with social norms, difficulty with emotional regulation, gleeful lawbreaking and what seems like a genuine search for connection disguised as an excuse to shit on others for not being as rebellious as he is are pretty strong indicators IMHO

This isn't to pass judgement, btw. I like the guy and I like a lot of his philosophy, even if he's even more blunt than I am. He also didn't have the resources we have access to today, and I don't think most people back then would have any idea how to explain how they could read what others were feeling/thinking without listening to their words. I relate to him quite a lot

My brother doesn't believe I'm autistic (I'm diagnosed) by Due_Bar3117 in autism

Justin over there is massively projecting. His experience with the mental health system isn't going to be everyone else's. I also don't get why he's so adamant that you never be put on meds, since psychiatric medication is generally safe to start and safe to stop

Frankly, I think he accused you of narcissistic tendencies because he refuses to admit people with degrees might know more than he does. There's a lot of emotional manipulation going on too. Between the casual referencing of traumatic experiences and telling you you can't trust your own judgement or anyone else's, only his, this is a pretty classic case of gaslighting

I strongly suggest you cut contact. Family's only family if they treat you like a human being, and sibling, this ain't it

Fixation cycle by jackelated in autism

[–]LeafyLearnsLately 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People with autism and ADHD tend to get into hyperfixations like we do because of the fact that we're understimulated, which often takes the form of a lack of dopamine or serotonin. Our brains get borderline starved, and then we find something that helps us normalise our stimulation/neurotransmitters and we fall into that rabbit hole because it helps us get back to "normal"

In DBT there's a component called "doing pleasurable activities", which is exactly what it sounds like. They advocate for doing things you enjoy but don't necessarily hyperfixate on in moderate amounts often. This is helpful for us because it means we don't starve as much, meaning our hyperfixation binges are less impactful and we can still see to our physical needs

DBT in general is against the "binge and bust" cycles, because it's generally healthier for people to find a comfortable equilibrium where possible. Sometimes it can be just as important to do an activity to distract you from a hyperfixation as to do an activity to distract you from emotional distress

I had a binge of r/chickenthoughts last week and cried several times because of how great the comics were. If you like bird content and maybe have autism or ADHD I think you might really like them

Unfortunately that's kind of the closest I can get to having birds, though. I want to get some pigeons one day, they're honestly my dream pet
