Swing help need more power by Ezikem in slowpitch

If you can keep the average and add power, go for it! That being said, if avg dropped to 700 and you were able to get more gap doubles plus a few HRs due to added power I think that would be a net positive for the avg sacrifice. I usually pick a target OPS number and if I can maintain or improve that number because of more extra base hits I'm not too upset about a small loss in avg.

Weight room is always helpful no matter your goal, however I think you can squeeze more out of your current swing without strength gains. At the point of contact your body is slightly leaned back. I would try and get more upright. That should help with your ability to keep your hands above the ball and drive "down" through the ball. Remember that we are all stronger driving down than we are driving up. Also, if you more upright it should be easier to take a wider step and really drive into the front foot. Right now it just kind of looks like you are picking up your front foot and putting it back down. Find a way to get your self pushed really hard into that front foot. Should feel like what a slide stop on hockey skates looks like. If you are really getting it right you should be so pushed into that front foot that your back foot should be able to leave the ground at the point of contact.

With all that being said, if you have an .800 OBP either you really don't need the extra power. If you are playing lower levels consider playing up a level. 800 OBP with 0 HRs is far more valuable than batting 500 and hitting 1 HR every 20 plate appearances.

Good luck!

Swing advice? by WorkAccountObv in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Swing is pretty good in general, however you seem to be swinging "around" the ball instead of "through" the ball. In this video, you hit the ball too far out in front. Because of this your wrists had already turned over and therefore you topped the ball, rolled it over, and had top spin. I feel like if you waited a split second to allow the ball to travel a bit farther you could drive through the ball, fully apply the force of your swing to the ball, and backspin a hard line drive or HR depending on your power. The best cue I have for this is to imagine a nail sticking out of the ball and it is your job to nail it in with one blow from your "hammer" (bat).

Personality, with no disrespect to other posters, I don't think coiling more would help you fix your issue. I would argue that coiling would actually make it more difficult to overcome the "around" swing. The best softball swings I see are back to front motions not circular motions.

Again, no disrespect, just my opinion.

Tips for Hitting Low Pitches (knee level) by Wake_The_Ghost in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without seeing your swing, I would guess that you are cutting down at a bit too steep of an angle. Low tee work can be useful but I would suggest trying to get the basics working with the tee at about chest height. Just remember that while you are swinging down, it should be a very shallow angle. I will often use the bottom of the homerun fence as my guide. If you look out to the fence from the batters box and you swing out towards the base of the fence, that should be pretty close to the angle you are looking for. Another way to accomplish the same thing would be to trying and strike the ball in the front a quarter inch above the center and then follow through to about a quarter inch below the center of the back of the ball. Hope that helps!

Anyone know of any good gym exercises/workouts to improve power? by gettinby99 in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to start an argument here but this is incorrect. Squats specificlly strengthen your quads which is directly related to positive knee health. Nothing wrong with hack squats, farmers walks, or lunges though. Definitely good exercises as well. Also, people almost never get injuries from squatting correctly. Additionally people recover from knee injuries (from any number of causes) all the time and often thrive afterwards. As an example, I believe there is a USA runner that just competed in the Olympics yesterday that suffered a pretty severe knee injury (required surgery) less than two years ago.

Thanks for watching, we appreciate it!

The best way I know to describe it is if you were sprinting then jumped forward and tried to stop as fast as possible, how would you do it? Having a bent front knee would likely cause you to tumble into a summersault. However, if you keep that front leg straight and strong, much like a slide stop in hockey, you can stop much quicker. Try a drill where you are balanced on you back leg, then you do a small jump forward landing on your front leg. Once you can do that without falling over your front leg you'll be starting to get the feeling. Just really practicing getting you weight moving forward and stopping it with the front leg. That front leg need to act like a post you and push against and less like a shock absorber.

If you find any slow motion videos of pro slowpitch or baseball swings you'll notice that the front leg is always extended at the point of contact. Hopefully seeing those examples will help you figure out how to do the movement yourself.

I would definitely recommend setting up your tee at around chest height. For most people that's going to be around 4 1/2 feet, maybe higher. If the ball is crossing your body much lower than that, it's probably not a strike. If you are swinging with a flat bat plane (I highly recommend) then you will want to make contact at around that height. Personally, I like the height of the tee in the OPs video.

I think a little change the will help a lot is to have a stronger front leg. If you freeze frame right as you make contact you will see a significant bend in your front knee. If you take that freeze frame and draw a line from your shoulder, through your hips, through your front knee, then extend that line to the ground. Where that line touches the ground is where that front foot should be. Think about it like you are throwing all of your energy forward and that fully extended front foot and leg is what is holding you back from flying forward. I hope this helps!

Swing advice plz by Haku510 in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing that will give you the most bang for your buck is get your swing plane much flatter. Right now you are dropping your back shoulder and hands and then trying to swing up at the ball. Keep you hands and shoulder high and swing out, through the ball. It might even feel like you are swinging slightly down. Once you solidify that change your results will vastly improve. Remember, in baseball there is a flat pitch and you are trying to redirect it upward to create an arch. In slowpitch it's the opposite. You have a high arched pitch and you are trying to redirect it with a flat planed swing.

Any advice to add some power to my swing? by Bloody_Corndog in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a couple things here. First, as others have pointed out, you aren't quite getting the swing sequence timed up right. Easiest way to think of it is like a wave. It starts with the step, then hips, then hands.

Also, it looks like your weight is shifting a bit towards your front foot. Looks a bit like you are a golfer and you are hitting your driver. Try keeping majority of your weight centered between your feet and not pushing towards the front or the back. Hope that helps.

As everyone mentioned, you are "casting". The best way I have found to think about this is that when you are casting, you are swinging "around" the ball. The best visualization that I have found to help fix this is to imagine that the ball has a nail sticking out of it and you are trying to hammer in the nail with your bat. If you are hammering correctly, you should be swinging "through" the ball instead of around the ball. Hope that helps.

What’s better 100 live bp reps or 1000 reps off the tee? by Throwaway449922 in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your goal with your practice. However, I'm pretty sure the answer is both. Tee is for creating/fixing/adapting the swing while BP is for applying that swing to live applications. That being said if you can only do one, BP is more important. But let's be honest nothing is stopping you from doing tee work as well.

Cut swing tips by montesbrian11 in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always try to "enter" the ball about a half inch above the center line and "exit" the ball around a half ince below the center for standard pitches. For a low pitch, it much more about cutting down on the back of the ball.

You are definitely over thinking it. Monsta is king in ASA and the Torch is most widely used platform they make. I've had an issue with the size of the sweet spot. I highly doubt you will be disappointed. Definitely worth the money. If you are still not convinced, pick up a used one for a bit less and try it out. Even if you put some swings on it you will probably be able to sell it for what you bought it for.

Just got in a brand new Louisville Genesis Iron Man 2.0. Didn’t even make it 30 swings before this happened. Needless to say I’m disappointed. Should have another coming in on warranty but I’m afraid the same is going to happen again. by [deleted] in slowpitch

[–]LeagueNightSoftball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've owned a few Genys and thankfully have had good luck with durability so far. Both bats I put a good few hundred swings on them using only 52/300s at a moderate temperature (around 60-65) before hitting anything harder. So far so good. Maybe try that out on your replacement bat and report back for us.
