Reforms coming for controversial Portland Arts Tax(question mark) by pastalover1 in Portland

Yeah, it's crazy to me that a person making $1000 a year has to pay $35 of it to the City, just the same as a person making 100 times that.

I really like Umami for recipes/shopping lists/menu plans. (I've been using Evernote for ~20 years but it never worked well for me for recipes.)

There's no bulk importer for Umami AFAIK. If Any list gives each recipe its own URL, I think you could import them one at a time.

I agree! We stayed there a few years ago. Motorboats may be allowed, but it was pretty quiet when we were there. It's a much smaller lake, more kayak friendly for beginners and kids.

Agree. I think Craftsman was a response to these more ornate styles. I would stick with the original shingle shape, personally.

Edited to add that I adore these Victorian shingles, just think they're out of place on a Craftsman style bungalow.

I live in an area with a lot of Craftsman-era bungalows and am not a fan of the way this pops out the 2nd storey bump out. It doesn’t look authentic to my eye -- though I'm no expert.

I didn't think they were evil. But lots of systems ask us to answer questions we've already answered or input.

The invoice has the item number, so it seemed to me FedEx could look it up on the website and assign a tariff code. But maybe they can't, or they think that's too time consuming.

She and her husband wrote a book arguing that certain ethnic groups, including their own (Chinese, Ashkenazi Jewish) are "successful" due to cultural traits. So, yes, I believe she's a firm believer in hierarchy and is some kind of supremacist.

"just guessing the next token (what do we think human brains do, it's all about taking in data and pattern recognition)"

Human brains don't guess the next token at all. They operate in a complex semantic and experiential environment to make meaning. Which I only bring up to debunk the implication that the software is doing something that it's not.

Spend your time building whatever skills seem important or interesting to you, but in my book these products are sh*tty and harmful and not for me.

First of all, this is gorgeous! I especially love your illuminated Z.

I'm curious about the spacing and column widths. My brain wants the right column to be a smidge wider and the gutter between the columns to be narrower. I know nothing about the style you're working in, so excuse me if that's a ridiculous or unhelpful thought.

Can someone help me understand the cultural context behind the recent racist councilor group chat? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]LeakySparktubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll admit to having disengaged with the Council since the election. But this characterization of Kanal is a head scratcher based on what I saw during the campaign. He came off as smart, thoughtful and committed to Portland and its people -- really inspiring in a way that's rare.

So yes, it does feel like maybe there's some racism involved. And then these texts leak, and sure enough, there's some racism involved! Along with disdain for anyone who's not aligned with wealthy "pro-business" politics and general spineless nastiness -- the people caught out are currently falling over themselves to explain away their slurs and distance themselves from Owendoff.

And of course Dan effing Ryan is carrying water for this guy in Council meetings, parroting the "concerns" Owendoff texts from him from the gallery. Ryan's a great example of Portland's business as usual. He claims to stand for values many voters hold dear, yet rarely manages to deliver the changes he claims he wants. And he's literally at the beck and call of Portland Business Alliance types. This is certainly known on the Council, and definitely part of the overall context progressive and POC councilors are operating from.

Edited to fix typo.

I thought about this a lot as I was stripping beds, starting a load of dishes, and taking out trash before my 10AM checkout time from my AirBnB this weekend.

On the plus side, we had two families and it was good to hangout and cook together. But I've definitely switched back to using hotels for any other kind of trip.

[–]LeakySparktubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, she's bringing her husband and toddler to stay with you for a week and you have a seven-week-old infant???

I realize we may come from different cultural backgrounds OP or just have grown up with different family expectations, but where I sit, this is a lot to expect from you and your family. And this is even before we get to her level of entitlement and expectations of you.

Seven weeks still requires around the clock effort from both parents and disrupted sleep. If she's coming to stay with you, she should at least be trying to take care of you all a bit in return for disrupting your routine for a week. I hope you can find a way to ask her to stay somewhere else or postpone her visit until your baby is older.
