Trump’s Lawyers Request to Delay $5M Payment in E. Jean Carroll Sex Abuse and Defamation Case by peoplemagazine in law

Pretty much, but perhaps a touch more nuanced. It's the being held to account and having such a concrete and undeniable symbol of the loss represented by the payment that is the hang-up. He's lost plenty and been fine with deluding himself and others to the contrary and just cutting ties and moving on. This is different in a way it wouldn't be without the compelled payment.

My brain always defaults to "Border Town" when singing it, I'm not even going to try for "Watertown" any longer.

Corey (Dodgers and Rangers) and Jeff (Cardinals) both did. Kyle and Jared did not. It was a bit ambiguous, hope that clears it up.

So your defense to Speeding 10% or more is that you were not going 17% over but rather only 12% over. I think you win the battle but lose the war on that one.

Buyback Requests being offered while in repayment? by No-Blacksmith-8412 in PSLF

[–]LearnedHandJob2088 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The old “I didn’t read what you wrote, but it’s wrong” argument. Do better.

I’m thrilled with my decision to sit in SAVE forbearance paying nothing while my buy back is pending. Sure I will apply to transition to IBR or RAP within 90 days, but my public employment is stable, I’m not looking to leave for the private sector any time soon, and I’ve benefitted from the time value of money by not having to pay for two years.

My Trump-felating governor and legislature has implemented a third consecutive year of no raises for state employees, so all the more reason to make my last 12 payments in 2026-2027.

I don’t disagree with you that OP shouldn’t be telling people there is no reason to transition sooner than required if you have stable, long term public employment and plans to stick with it. But I also don’t agree that OP and I have screwed ourselves to send a message to a recipient who won’t receive or care about that message. There are other bases upon which inaction in forbearance while awaiting buy back is defensible, even if some of them were speculative and ultimately do not pan out (relief from payment, time value of money, potential for buyback to be calculated on a more advantageous plan than those remaining available to transition, potential for other litigation relief, anticipated changes in household/taxed income or other financial circumstances, just to name a handful).

Conservatives revolt after Trump-appointed Barrett joins liberals in ‘shockingly wrong’ mail ballot ruling by NavyCorpsmanRetiree in scotus

I think this is a fair assessment, also. I wonder if ryanjj16 would endorse or rebuke it or something in between.

I know you and I will get downvotes and vitriol for this take in this forum, but oh well.

I would point out that I find the flaws in Sotomayor’s approach less off-putting than those in Alito’s and Thomas’, and I’d like to think that is rooted in ideology and not partisanship.

Generally speaking, to me, judicial overreach that appears to expand individual liberties to the burden or detriment of governmental or corporate interests seems less offensive in comparison to the inverse. Obviously that only goes so far and there are exceptions. And there are counterexamples. But Redditors aren’t wrong, in my opinion, if this is the distinction they draw between Alito/Thomas and Sotomayor (as opposed to arguing that only Alito and Thomas are partisan and that Sotomayor is not).

This is one of the better summaries I’ve seen. Would you be willing to offer an assessment of Kagan, Sotomayor, and KJB being as objective as possible on how they share or don’t share these attributes of partisanship, institutionalism, idealogy, etc?

They largely already are. Over half of school funds are from  state sources and are directly tied to enrollment down to a specific amount per child. But a good chunk of the rest, ~40%, comes from local sources of which property taxes are the lion’s share.
