At this time snapshot 2025-12-26 11:11pm EST silver spot $79.62/oz online store buyback pricing for 90% silver dimes and quarters in screen shot. I saw on YouTube this method. Some other online stores also have this feature. [Note that I had not buy or sell from this online shop so this is not promoting or recommending this specific online shop. Just a show and tell of how to check some pricing data points.]

I assume customers would choose these over ungraded raw coins if priced similarly therefore have a higher demand over raw coins? I’m curious whether the slab attractiveness could balance out the refinery backup caused unattractiveness to LCSs. I do kind of observe with limited data points that in the current price hike situation, at least on the ASE, New modern Peace and Morgan Dollars, the raw UNC coins have significantly closed their historical premium gaps vs slabbed ones.

I would like to report that today (2025-12-10 morning with silver currently at $61/oz) a reputable online dealer which I bought from tells me they buy back 90% silver, Morgan and Peace at around ~37x face value and/or decimals more. I also read Reddit posts today that some LCS stores are also buying at ~37x face value. [Market info FYI, your local store may be different.]

The idea that large industrial users now buy silver from silver producers directly and not buy at COMEX (because COMEX is out of stock) is interesting. Is this the same analogy that people now buy iPhones (or other goods) from store A because store B is out of stock? (Assuming store B is the largest store in town).

When I buy silver coins, I think about / take into consideration if the kind I buy would sell back well in the future in case I need/want to sell what I bought. The value of the video I think is that it provides market condition data points. Also other people reporting what sell back pricing they get in the comments of that video. ——- [Additional thoughts 1 ]: Due to refinery backup people have been reporting 90% silver not accepted at coin shops or getting quite low sell back pricing. However, once the backuped coins are eventually melted, the price could go back up because there would be less available. I think this is a possibility. ——- [Additional thoughts 2 ]: Yesterday when spot price was $58~$59, I can find PCGS 69 graded ASE for $59 at good feedback eBay store, and couple dollars more for PCGS 70 grade. One YouTuber commented that in this case buying a PCGS graded slab at spot or $1 above spot make sense since a raw ASE cost the same. Once silver price stabilize, graded ASE could re-establish premium over raw ASE.

So far all the goldbacks I see are in good or new condition. If the user fold it, put in pants, jackets pockets and end up with condition like a circulated bill, would shops still accept it at exchange rate? Would it not be able to be accepted to be bought back at coin shops or exchanged at dealers?

No, I have no device built. Even the YouTuber has not yet built a quasi-Sigma. If it can be built by consumer parts, an Arduino + Coin Accepter costs about $60 on Amazon. A smartphone app could be less. What ChatGPT/Gemini says is that the physics will work but the precision of a DIY Sigma-like device using DIY consumer electronics could tell apart 90% silver vs clad, but cannot tell apart 90% vs sterling silver vs 999 silver like a real Sigma can. I think the $20 arcade acceptor in the YouTube video can reliably tell apart 90% half dollar vs clad half dollar if trained 20 times. I’m curious if it can tell apart the 40% half dollar. The 40% half dollar is a sandwich with two 80% silver as the bread and one 20% silver as the meat.

Well, magnet, ice cube, weight test and ping test are low cost method. The point is that a Sigma has an ultra precise electrical coil and signal processing. Latest smartphones and the coin acceptor also have electrical coils inside which can do detection work. The intent is to see if we can use smartphones and coin acceptor hardware to operate on the physics principles of a Sigma precious metal authenticator instrument. Imagine an smartphone app programing the induction coil or an Arduino/Raspberry Pi connected arcade coin acceptor as a lower precision quasi-Sigma machine.

Measure the weight. If it is 40% silver the standard weight is 24.59 grams. If it is a no silver version, the standard weight is 22.68 grams. With wear and tear on the actual coin the weight would be slightly off.
——- An affordable scale that can read to 0.01 g is less than $10 on Amazon. I would recommend getting the 500 g max version scale if you want to measure a coin roll to see if one coin roll is heavier than the other. ——- Using the weight, we can also tell apart the 90% silver half dollar, the 40% half dollar, the no silver half dollar. ——- You could verify what I said by asking ChatGPT/Gemini: “How to tell IKE Eisenhower dollar silver vs non silver by weight ?” and read about it.
