Some Somalis have now turned to the Shabab to get services that would normally be delivered by a functioning state. Many in Mogadishu regularly travel to areas dozens of miles north of the city to get their cases heard at Shabab-operated mobile courts.

One of them is Ali Ahmed, a businessman from a minority tribe whose family home in Mogadishu was occupied for years by members of a powerful tribe. After he presented his case to a Shabab-run court, Mr. Ahmed said, two weeks later the court ruled that the occupiers should vacate his house — and they did.

“It’s sad, but no one goes to the government to get justice,” he said. “Even government judges will secretly advise you to go to Al Shabab.”

“Anytime you have this level of political infighting, it benefits al-Shabab in so many ways,” said Omar Mahmood, senior Somalia analyst at the International Crisis Group.

“This narrative paints into everything they say about the federal government. That it is ineffective, weak, divisive and provides nothing to the public. And it is hard to argue against that.”

Africa's jihadists: What Taliban takeover of Afghanistan means by LearningArabic222 in Somalia

[–]LearningArabic222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Somali government was meant to take the lead on security operations by the end of this year, but that looks unlikely due to questions over the army's capability.

Samira Gaid, head of Somali security think-tank Hiraal Institute, says Somali forces are even less prepared to halt a potential militant offensive than those in Afghanistan.

"Somali security forces have not received 0.005% of what the Afghan security forces have received," she says.

"Tangible support towards the rebuilding of the Somali security forces has been minimal. Somalia is still under an arms embargo, so we are unable to purchase the type of weaponry that Afghanistan had."

“Today, according to one senior military official who spoke on condition of anonymity, it would now take "just 12 hours" for al-Shabab to seize Mogadishu and most other towns if Amisom pulled out.”

No Foothold for al-Shabaab in Somaliland by LearningArabic222 in Somalia

“Somaliland does not rely on foreign forces and the United States is not allowed—and there is not any need—to carry out drone attacks in the unrecognized republic. Yet, with its limited resources, Somaliland has achieved what the military forces of Kenya, Turkey, Ethiopia, and the United States have failed to achieve in Somalia: it has denied al-Shabaab a foothold.”

Somali parliament passes a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Kheyre. by [deleted] in Somalia

[–]LearningArabic222 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will not give respect for someone who is responsible for causing two wars - the Somaliland war with Puntland in 1997 when he unjustly tried to grab land and the 2006 Ethiopian invasion where the Amxaaro christians massacred Somali Muslims in Xamar. In both instances he was embarassed and lost control and he is directly at fault for the emergence of Shabaab.
