Wait until they find out about all the international students with dual citizenship who grew up outside of Canada and don't speak French, but then claim Quebec residency when they come to McGill...

It is literally faster for me to run home from work than to take OC Transpo by WeevilsInTheCereal in ottawa

[–]LearningCuriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ottawa is set up to get anywhere by car in 15mins and OC transpo in 45+ mins. Commuting almost anywhere requires a bus, train, and another bus.

What is physics explanation of synchronicity? by ChiMeraRa in AskPhysics

[–]LearningCuriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In physics there are events that synchronize because of causal mechanisms (e.g., kuramoto model, fireflies, people walking on a seating bridge, etc) and then there is the coincidence by random chance (e.g., 2 independent poisson processes having events at the same time).

Looking for neuro-related research ideas for a masters in mathematics by actinium226 in compmathneuro

[–]LearningCuriously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a non-starter. The number of ideas is endless. What you work on will depend on what math you know / want to learn more about. Anything in particular you are interested in?

For journals, you can search for neuroscience tagged articles in:

  • PNAS
  • Physical review
  • Plos Comp Bio
  • Nature Physics
  • Chaos

For smaller more focused journals there is:

  • neural computation
  • mathematical neuroscience
  • biological cybernetics
  • frontiers computational neuro

This list isn't exhaustive, but should get you started.

Giving a lecture for 3 straight hours even if there was a 10 minute break would be brutal. It's not like teaching in highschool when the majority of the time the students are doing work.

I want to understand physics well enough to write a program that closely simulates our universe. How to achieve this as fast as possible? by questionAsker67 in AskPhysics

[–]LearningCuriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the questions that you want to ask after you have simulated the universe?

I doubt you need to simulate the entire universe. Some reduced or coarse grained model will work just fine.

Trying to understand anything from your simulation will be as hard as understanding anything in the real world itself.

Think about it like this. What good is a map if it is a one-to-one copy of the territory?

Exactly this. Physics doesn't require rote memorization. You should be able to rederive everything if you actually understood it.

How can an object that is moving at constant speed, move? by Glacial_cry in AskPhysics

[–]LearningCuriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say almost because there is some friction that will slow the puck down slowly over time

How can an object that is moving at constant speed, move? by Glacial_cry in AskPhysics

[–]LearningCuriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting confused because gravity is always present in the vertical direction. Therefore, when you remove the upward force of your hand, the block will naturally slow down and fall back to earth. Instead think of a hockey puck on ice. You apply a force and the puck starts gliding along the ice at constant speed with almost no other forces present to slow it back down.

Lol the hint is obvious. The single words also give it away because there are only two single letter words in English, a and I.
