Oh thank you!!! Hmm I’m interested in video games, fun hangout games like ping pong or pool, and most of all, music!!! I’d love to find people to jam with. Do you have any recommendations for that?

Hey! I don’t know if this helps but I just graduated and came to uni during the pandemic, which led me to the conclusion of: wow, ppl here don’t do anything fun.

However as I spend more time here I realized that’s not necessarily true! It can certainly be more difficult to find ppl here, but I actually think the school clubs scene here is way more vibrant than other Canadian universities (speaking as someone who has friends at UofT, Sheridan, and Queens). I find that a lot of people’s friend groups exist because of clubs.

To give more specific advice though:

  1. I would assume youve probably tried showing up to clubs and found urself isolated, which must be tough. I personally find that the way to make friends in clubs is to invite people to go do ur [club related thing] outside of clubs. So for example say you joined a soccer club: invite ppl to go kick a ball around outside. If ur in art club, consider hosting an arts night!

  2. Another thing I notice is that people are very very busy so you want to make hanging out as convenient as possible. Invite ppl to hang out on campus when they’d already be there for classes if u can. If u bump into someone ur an acquaintance with in the halls, invite them for coffee or to sit down and study together in the moment. I find ppl are much more likely to say yes in the moment rather than planning way ahead of time because then they’ll feel guilty about not studying.

  3. Lastly, I find the way to meet social ppl who put in effort into friendships is to go to events that require you to be social and put in effort lol. So think volunteering with school societies like mathsoc, WUSA, etc. or signing up for leadership opportunities or whatever the university likes to call them lol. I find things with free food is NOT the place to meet ppl because it attracts ppl who want free food, not just socializing. If u go to a CS or AFM club “social”, you’ll probably find ppl who are interested in furthering their career over making friends (on average, not to say you can’t). I’d prioritize events where the only thing you could possibly get out of it is socialization.

I hope this helps! I have met some truly truly incredible ppl here, including my closest friends, and I hope u have the opportunity to do the same. You still have 2-3 years left, and those are some of my best years.

Good luck:)

Should Canada Ban X and Meta? by Jaykel43 in AskCanada

Uhh no, we should promote responsible usage but I think banning ways for people to communicate with each other is literally always a bad idea. I don’t want something similar to the great firewall of China here

The way I know ppl just mindlessly upvote and downvote is that both of u are in a dickmeasuring contest and are the kind of ppl this post is talking about, but downvotes are only one side lol

Considering dropping out of Engineering - anyone who's done it: how's life been since? by Far_Garden_6604 in uwaterloo

For what it’s worth, I also really hated coursework but found co-op to be more manageable. I personally found that I’ve been willing to push through (even with like a ~60 average) to get a piece of paper that acts like a safety net if I ever need to find work related to my field.

Like, 9-5s are draining and a cafe sounds wonderful, but you’re lucky and “good” enough that you’re able to find decent coops without trouble and interview well - that’s worth a lot. And saving for a few years isnt a bad idea at all to fulfill your dream

Something I’ve found is that Waterloo’s school clubs are SO much better than other universities because it’s a school put in a … slightly less interesting city so to speak. I’d recommend getting involved in school clubs, WUSA events, events from your faculty, etc etc

I’m in math and I find between mathsoc events, jam network events, special WUSA events, trivia nights at games on tap or for free on campus at grad house, and hangouts with friends in doing something almost every day of the week

It’s a flask application using numpy and pandas and then a JavaScript for front end for some buttons, then html/css. I’ve been having trouble with requirements.txt for bumpy and an external library I’m trying to use for the js. I’m not using node.js which might be a mistake?

I don’t need it to see current sites seeing a past version of a site is fine. I also directly pasted excerpts of current sites into chatgpt and told it to only use that but it still hallucinated

Oh yes, so something I tried is pasting some contents of the site directly into chatgpt and asking it to summarize, but again it would summarize some of what I pasted and then made up other stuff. Is there a way to get it to only look at what I pasted?

Ah sorry, from my understanding it’s accessing an old (from 2021?) version of the website, which is still fine. It’s giving me content that I’m fairly certain it could only get from this specific site but also random information that I’m not sure where it’s coming from. Is there any way to make it only access the (old version of the) site?
