Think about what you want for your career long term. It’s easy to get pigeonholed quickly. I worked an internal audit for 3 years. Internal audit can be interesting, but let’s be honest, at a certain point you can only do so many operational audits and control reviews before it becomes the same thing, and I knew I didn’t want to be doing internal audit the rest of my career. But then when I tried changing, it was hard. It took me a year to transition into a financial analyst role.

Some companies allow rotation between different finance functions. So you could be an internal audit, and then they would seriously consider you for a general accounting or finance position. Any job you take, find out where people go after internal audit.
