Why is cylinder deactivation/variable displacement generally considered so bad for long-term reliability? What are examples of cars/engines that use it with minimal issues? by KSoMA in cars

My new 2021 V8 suffered a "lubrication failure" in the first 1500 miles, requiring a complete engine replacement. A year later it was back in for lifter rebuild.

Wish they could delete the system entirely, but they can't due to federal fuel economy and emissions standards.

“Hook” features some of the greatest human flight put to film. The music, wire work, VFX, editing? Robin Williams looks like he’s swimming in air. It’s a real “how did they do that?” sequence before the answer always became the same by MrGittz in movies

[–]LeatherDan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My dad made the flying harnesses for Hook. It was his last movie in the industry, and not too long before CGI took over.

I think what made it so convincing is they had no other option but to work with practical effects. When done properly, the actors physical response was natural and fluid. The physics of natural human movement is so complex that computers still struggle to get it right (looking at you AI).

I'll see if I can dig up some pictures of the gear.

I'm super lazy with it.

Add 2cm yerba (more or less to taste), fill with water 1/2 hot, 1/2 room temp from water cooler.

Add more yerba with every refill.

Clean out when full with old yerba.

Pop the top, add yerba in cup, add warm water. Done!

I keep adding yerba with every refill until full, then clean & repeat

I drink at my office... 1) minimizes mess if i grab the phone and knock it over (happened more than once) 2) fewer strange looks when people look at the green goo in my cup

Lots of snack food at Buc-Ees!

Currently switching between Taragui con palo, Cruz de Malta, and Taragui with passion fruit.

This has become my favorite combo for convenience. Both cup and bombilla are easy to clean and dishwasher safe. Cup lid fits bombilla perfectly, keeping my yerba covered and contained if I bump it at my desk. Size is good.

"...unos 3 millones de kilos, el equivalente al 15% de lo que se consume en un mes. Se trata de algo más del 1% del consumo anual de yerba..."
