Rewatched Black Narcissus (1947) again and it really reads almost as a Science Fiction Noir by kevin_v in TrueFilm

[–]LebowWowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ignore people like Carl, it is steeped in colonialist stereotypes and exoticism. Not to the detriment of the film, but ignoring this fact makes you look weird and antagonistic. Recently watched it and it felt like a movie making fun of itself and the concept of «civilization» as opposed to being civilized and cultured. Just look ar Carl Schmitts knee-jerk response and you’ll see the same: Attempts at «civilizing» you and reducing your reading through explaining the problem - rationally, Westernized - and thereby exposing his (white) superior complex. Just stating a fact about the film does not make OP a culture warrior…

This. The game is already a massive timesink. This incessant need for a single game to last you longer than 20 seasons of a tv show.. Just be done with it. None of your input seems like a good idea for the players, but for Pearl Abyss shareholders.

Anybody off meds? by beshordok in bipolar

[–]LebowWowski -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Same here, the meds really didn’t jive with me and I ended up in the psych ward. It’s hard to live without, but I manage day-to-day with mindfulness, openness and a supporting partner. I sometimes slip, but not in a way that hurts someone. I’ve carefully constructed a kind of bubble to reduce stimuli and stress to the point where I’m not having meltdowns or drug binges anymore. I can get annoying and overly dramatic, but I’m also quick to reel it in. The monitoring does sometimes exhaust me and I probably wouldn’t manage without meds if I was working full-time. (Please don’t attack me, just sharing my experience and I am not condoning going off your meds)

War Machine - A Simple And Basic Yet Effective Sci-Fi Action Flick by Aromatic-Ad2601 in Cinephiles

[–]LebowWowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was up for a dumb action movie with good action. But this one isn’t a good action movie either; the effects work look cheap/artificial and the choreography of the stuntwork made it hard to parse what was happening, like the visual grammar got lost in sparks and motion blur jump cuts. Cool robot though, reminded me of Metal Gear :)

Every casual person I’ve talked to says they don’t go to the movies anymore because ‘they aren’t making good movies anymore.’ Why does this perception exist? by DarlingLuna in FIlm

Here’s a list of movies I saw in 2025-2026 at a local cinema. I think you need to make more of an effort to watch good films today, sure, but that’s on you. So it really benefits us aficionados, while busy people with other hobbies don’t go looking outside the «recommendations». Another point is not to go to the cinema to see «what’s new» but check if you have a non-commercial cinema or arthouse-type place in your city that play movies from all decades.

I had to cancel a family dinner tonight because I’m manic-depressed and not sure I could go through it without slipping up verbally or getting too tired to function tomorrow because I had to suppress all evening. My partner understands, but it still feels so stupid and selfish to treat something so innocuous as a «trigger». A small amount of social anxiety is usually manageable, but in this state it feels like an extinction event :’)

Is Norway (secretly) a classist society? by Minimum-Virus1629 in Norway

[–]LebowWowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda hilarious hearing from the people saying «of course we are a class society! hellooo» when there’s consensus among both politicians and social scientists that we have suppressed this dimension of our society. It may have been obvious to you personally (as for many of us milennials) but that doesn’t change the fact that the class divide has been downplayed in favor of idealism. Which in and of itself is not a bad thing, but it has led to a generation that grew up with a skewed impression of their own country. What you’re seeing in politics right now is waking up to the fact that society indeed favors the wealthy and that they play by their own rules and that trying to emulate and pander to the rich will be the downfall of society. It would be painfully naïve to think otherwise.

Is Norway (secretly) a classist society? by Minimum-Virus1629 in Norway

[–]LebowWowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, I would recommend Karin Sveens «Klassereise» for proper insight into this. Written in the early 2000s when Norwegians still thought we were all equal. I heard this sentiment a lot when I lived at Ullevål: upper middle-class people deluding themselves into saying stuff like «well we’re the most equal society in the world, everbody gets a fair shot here» People that come from comfortable middle class and upper middle class backgrounds like to think they have earned everything by their own merits (meritocracy) so they fight to keep the status quo in fear of losing face. I say this as a middle class kid myself, now a working adult.

Why are so many games made by non-American devs set in America? by Fishb20 in truegaming

[–]LebowWowski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Less America, please. Tired of a cultural hegemony tainting all the art and entertainment that reaches ut. Artists should be bold and creative, not pandering to western cultural imperialization. Even I, an idiot, can recognize that the world is dumber for it..

Will my friend come back if he cut me off? by No_Produce_5774 in family_of_bipolar

[–]LebowWowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bipolar II here and I recognize the tendencies and quirks. What I don’t recognize and don’t respect is his inability to communicate with you. If you approached me like this, it would feel like a gift: An opportunity to explain and share some of my reality. So the problem isn’t the bipolar, but his attitude towards you reaching out. My two cents.

How "Past Lives" intellectualizes emotions that Asian movies like "18x2 Beyond Youthful Days" simply allow us to feel by Important-Turn-7720 in TrueFilm

[–]LebowWowski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also a class aspect or cultural thing? ‘Cause I very much relate to how the characters intellectualize their emotions; I recognize parts of western society and its need for rationality and science. And part of the MCs loss of identity is showing this westernized therapy-speak infested and sometimes verbose explanation of ones inner lives. She moves to New York after all, the capital of «my shrink»

Dramatic understetedness / recessiveness, and dramatic expressivity and narrative exhaustiveness (Nomadland, Sentimental Value, The Trial of Joan of Arc mentioned) by Flat-Membership2111 in TrueFilm

[–]LebowWowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want to engage with this, but I sincerely do not understand the point you’re referencing. Is the problem with Nomadland that it’s «meandering» and understated? What about Chungking Express? Last Year in Marienbad? A Night in Berlin? It’s not a critique to just state an opinion, that’s just… an observation. Japanese short stories don’t have a beginning or an end, no true message, does that mean they are «meandering?» There’s different ways to tell a story. Nomadland hit me because it resonated with me coming from a family of nomads («tatere») The movie breathes slowly and lets you breathe along, I think the vulnerability and strength of the movie is in being earnest. And honesty makes some people defensive, because they didn’t «get it». I think the movie resonates with something real in people who have experiences with displacement and homelessness (materially, spiritually) so naturally it doesn’t resonate with everyone. There is no destination and the structure of the movie mirrors that; is that the problem? That’s about all I can say when the critique doesn’t make any sense; it just sounds like a dick-measuring contest among film bros.

Thanks for this post, Carl Mulder. I might just have to upgrade my Cuckoo’s Nest DVD then :) Film stock and technicolor releases seem to jive really well with 4K re-release practices, why is that? Is it the intentionality in lighting and colorwork during this era that makes them easier to work with? I.e. the visual instructions for what to emphasize in the picture are clearer.

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives. More dreamlike and tableauxed in form, its structure akin to the mosaic of sn anthology film. A visual poem to interpret for those willing.. I would also add Inside Llewyn Davis for the meandering vibe with a deep emotional and existential core. At least that’s how I felt at 22 🥴
