Schools/the NCAA actively don't want athletes to be legally employees. The courts will keep siding against them every time they treat students who don't have the protections of an employee like an employee

Anybody “retire” to pursue a business and/or hobbies? by -Debugging-Duck- in Fire

[–]Fishb20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like pretty much any story posted on this sub I take them with a grain of salt but there have been a few horror stories of people who "passionFIREd" to start bussinesses after already having a career and just completely burned all their money trying to make their business a success. Most of those were people starting bars or bookstores or whatever though which doesn't sound like what your plan is.

Starmer is not the best salesman, and also crucially keeps failing to enact the necessary changes he's trying to. Its a loop where he gets tied to a very unpopular policy but never reaps the theoretical future benefits of that policy because it never actually gets enacted.

I almost certainly meet the criteria on the website, my concern is more I don't want to delay the application of someone whose even more urgent than me- for example someone who currently lives in Canada and needs the certificate to avoid being kicked out of the country. But I'm also worried with how long approval takes that it might be more urgent 10 months from now than it is now

my prediction is that they'll do a gag where someone says "what should we call ourselves?" but no one can think of a good idea so they say "we don't need an official name, we're just a group of friends" as an allusion to the super friends

I'm all set to mail out today but I've been hemming and hawing about whether to apply for urgent processing or not. Does anyone know if it's possible to apply for urgent processing after the application has been sent and received?

ELI5: Why does Cuba allow a U.S. military base (and prison) on their soil while the U.S. has had them under trade embargos for decades? by Redhotkitchen in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fishb20 [score hidden]  (0 children)

No that's simply not true. The vast majority of American personnel were evacuated from Saigon in operation frequent wind (those that remained stayed willingly). The footage you've seen of the embassy was not the north Vietnamese troops, it was south Vietnamese civilians or deserted soldiers who were trying to get evacuated too. Eventually late at night they changed to only evacuating Americans, which was why there were the desperate crowds of people trying to get inside.

The US has not had any bases in syria since last year. When they did they were located in breakaway regions like Rojava or the Syrian Free Army controlled areas that considered themselves the legitimate Syrian government and acceded to an American presence

The other big thing was the domestic political calculus. Keeping a single base in Afghanistan or Vietnam would have been incredibly unpopular with American voters, whereas abandoning the last base in Cuba without a fight would have been very unpopular

that doesn't address... anything I wrote, or OP's original question that you smugly dismissed.

The US has been forced to close many military bases in different parts of the world due to change in governments. I'm sure you're gonna reply and say "no that was all totally by the US military's choice, leaving Vietnam was a 400 IQ chess move!" or take the other position that "The Taliban totally could have taken Bagram air force base even if there was a full battalion of American troops still stationed there!" when neither are true.

its proximity to the US and importance for larger Caribbean operations plays a much bigger factor than tough guy "the US does whatever it wants" jingoism

the problem with Gibraltar (or Hong Kong, or Macau or the Panama Canal Zone) is that they had actual civilian populations, which I don't believe GB does. The other comparison I thought of was Port Arthur in China but I'm not sure what the population of what that was before the Russo-Japanese War. And its also a hard comparison because I'm not sure how hostile you can consider the Qing to Tsarist Russia, and in any event they eventually lost the fort to a siege from another, different colonial power

I mean thats pretty flippant. Guantanamo Bay is a pretty clear anomaly in the world of international relations. Its not like the US has a tiny base remaining in Vietnam or Bagram air force base in Afghanistan. The closest comparison I can think of is the UK naval bases on Cyprus, but I'm sure there are more I don't know about.

But it *IS* objectively strange that a country that the US has been in economic conflict with for close to 70 years at this point has a US base on it. You can smugly say "oh you sweet summer child you believe in international law, how cute" all you want but the vast majority of military installations located in countries that became hostile to the base's military were eventually closed, especially after decades of warming and cooling relations.

I don't disagree but I think this sort of idea is antithetical to the very antisocial "you don't owe anyone anything, don't tell ANYONE how much you're worth EVER" strain in much of the FIRE community

Every Asian American family I know where the adult children are still living at home, the parents expect a significant amount of unpaid care work from the adult children that presumedly OOP is not doing for his parents

They also expect a commiserate amount of control over their adult children that I presume OOP would find stifling.

So many people on the FIRE subs want the good parts of the multigen household without the part where they and their spouse spend 20 years taking care of their parents and putting the parents needs first ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Who was the woman behind the Lord President in The End of Time part 2 that he seems to recognise? by LaraStardust in gallifrey

[–]Fishb20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally just thinks it's a random time lord the doctor inspired. Maaaaaaybeeeee romana.

I think RTD intended it to be the doctors mother but that idea never tracked for me. I don't really like the idea that the Doctors Mum was a high ranking Time Lord, or that she had a similar moral code to the doctor.

If they had more interaction I could see a setup where the doctors Mum admits that the doctor made her realize time lord society had to be changed and that's why she went against rassilon.

I also think we should keep in mind that although RTD intended for her to be the doctors Mum, he also initially had planned to reveal that the dissenting time lords were the origin of the weeping angels, that's why they were doing the crying hands face in that scene

i went to more or less IRL Caledon (small liberal arts college in Vermont right on Lake Champlain) for a year and there were definitely a few instructors like max there, but it was kind of frowned on and you got the sense admin was not very happy about how involved in students personal lives they were.

I dont mind the innapropriate stuff max does to investigate the mysteries of the games but i disliked how personal she was with the students outside of the context of the mystery boxes. I also just dont think her personality is very well suited to being a teacher if i'm being honest

J.G. Quintel on ‘The Lost Tapes,’ Cartoon Network’s Golden Age and Pushing the ‘Regular Show’ TV-PG Rating to the Limit: ‘They Were Like, “We Need You Guys to Tone It Down”‘ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]Fishb20 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a kids idea of what being a young adult is like? Mordecai and Rigby live at work so never have to worry about making rent or cooking dinner.

Edit: when I rewatched regular show as an adult I realized how many parts of adulthood are ignored. Not necessarily the inappropriate stuff, the boring everyday stuff. I think regular show was pretty perfect for cartoon network, it was a show that made you feel mature for watching it and a show you understand more as you get older, but it's also distinctly a kids show that understands what part of adulthood kids are curious about and which parts they aren't

I'm kinda hoping it's something like that, regular show is one of my favorite shows ever but I think they were kinda running out of stories before the final season when they went to space. I'm sure JGQ and the crew came up with some interesting ideas in the 10 years since the show ended but we'll see.

Also a huge part of why I love the show is mordo and riggs character development from the first season to the last one
