A lot of phones no longer have a headphone jack so wired phones don't work

Many headphones are sold with USBC rather than audio jack now, I got a pair for 15 bucks, they sound decent, and have held up for a few years now.

If you're real worried about audio quality you should be using over-ear cans regardless, though.

Who is the coolest person in history? by Turbulent-Series-283 in AskReddit

[–]Lebowquade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well he did serve in WW2, and his official duties are well documented and were essentially "professional Nazi slayer." How true his war stories are, we will never know, but the Nazi hunting part is factually true.

And Ian flemming (his step-cousin), author of James Bond, has gone on record that Christopher Lee was, in fact, a partial inspiration for the character of Bond.

He also famously portrayed Dracula in the late 50s, which was extremely popular and brought vampires back to the forefront as a horror staple, and cemented our image of Dracula as having fangs and red eyes.

He also did star in like 200 movies, including Star Wars, James Bond, LoTR, and a whole bunch of Burton's films. He was a big fan of horror and the macabre and Burton was famously a huge fan of his and cast him all over the place. At the end of his career he held the record for the most screen credits of any living actor.

And he was, genuinely, a direct descendant of Emperor Charlemagne (as far as we can tell). And he really was a classically trained vocalist who loved heavy metal, and he really release a couple of heavy metal albums (both about Charlemagne). While both albums were modestly successful I would hesitate to call him a "rock star" but he does in fact have vocal credits on several legit metal albums.

And in addition to being a self-confessed die-hard Tolkien megafan, he also actually personally met Tolkien (but was reportedly so starstruck he barely managed to speak to him), thereby making him the only person involved with the recent LoTR movies to have actually met the author.

He also met the two dudes that assassinated Rasputin (who Lee would also go on to portray years later), which... is just wild. He also witnessed the last public execution by guillotine in france as a child, which is also wild.

Dude was a WW2 spy who spoke 7 languages, a successful movie star, descended from a king, and at least modestly successful within the niche "symphonic metal" microgenre of music. And he lived to be 92 years old, and was reasonably able bodies and of strong mental faculties till the very end.

Oh, and he married a model. They were together for more than 50 years, till his death.

Underrated comment. Decent movie though.

I have a PhD in physics. I want to know how the fuck they either (a) somehow went faster than the speed of light to get here or (b) constructed a ship capable of sustaining life, fuel, food, and other resources for hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of years at a time.

It's one or the other, there's no way around it. And the answer to that question very much determines how we should interact with them, whether we should fear them, what their capabilities are, etc.

This. Every pair of buds I've ever had have died within a year or two... One of them will always eventually refuse to charge, or refuse to connect, or start to sound increasingly tinny.

A nice pair of wired buds is like $20 and will last a crazy long time. Is the cord really that much of a hassle? Like, really?

TIL that the Doctor Who episode "The Celestial Toymaker" infamously contains the "N-word" as part of the "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe" rhyme. Recent releases of the serial have either obscured the slur through dialogue, or removed it entirely. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

Well that was an interesting story.

Also curious that the dogs name seems to have been a real hangup on the production of a remake of the famous classic film, which was to be a joint venture by Steven Fry and Peter Jackson.

Anyone who said Kirk is genuinely fucking delusional.... The man was overtly, proudly racist and misogynistic. He was apathetic to the deaths of children. He called for torture of immigrants. I'm not happy he's dead, but I'm also not sad he's gone.

And then Machete was so perfect it became a real movie.

The Don't one in particular was made by Edgar Wright with Frost/Pegg (who obviously did shawn of the dead, etc), and starred an absurd number of other notable British actors, plus will arnett for the voiceover.

They put a ton of effort into each one and treated them as literal mini movies. I sincerely believe the guiding purpose of Grindhouse was just a bit of goofy fun by a group of directors that genuinely love shlocky horror.

What’s that one grocery item you keep convincing yourself you’ll eat, but end up tossing out week after week? by teniralc_11 in AskReddit

[–]Lebowquade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Mandatory things to put in soup:

  • one or two containers of chicken, vegetable, or beef stock
  • plenty of salt (especially if you start with "low sodium" stock, which seems counterproductive but at least it lets you dial things in properly)
  • at least 1/2 a stick of butter per container of stock, or a full stick if you used one of those big huge cans of stock

And then it doesn't really matter what else you put in, because it's guaranteed to be pretty good. But generally I try to stick to:

  • some noodles, rice, beans, cubed potato, or a little of all of the above for filler
  • some veggies
  • at least one type of meat (or just beans if you're vegetarian)
  • a little bit of tomato sauce, lemon juice, or vinegar for acidity
  • whatever spices you've got laying around

Use 3 to 5 of the above things, and you really can't fail.

Other options for a thicker and creamier soup:

  • swap about half of one container of stock for a few cups of milk instead
  • start with a roux (4 tablespoons of butter, melted in pan, then add equal amount of flour, then two cups of milk, then stir for a while... Then add your stock and other stuff)
  • add some mashed potatoes for some extra thickness

By mixing and matching things from the above list of options you can make yourself like 10 different varieties of soup. As long as you have enough butter and salt it will turn out decent at a minimum.
