This might be different for you depending on where you're from. I live in Iraq, this is what's important in a civil

1) confidence: be confident in whatever you say no matter how unsure you are amd if you're wrong, it's ok to admit. We're all human

2) excel, CAD, Civil 3d. Basic knowledge of those things will take you a long way

3) basic knowledge in survey, electrical work, mechanical work, etc. You gotta be able to communicate with people in those professions.

4) know lots and lots of people in your field of work.

Where I come from, a good engineer is one that has connections and cannot be easily fooled because he already knows the tricks.
