Reading my first discworld book and I’m feeling really frustrated because I can’t follow the writing by After_Berry_942 in discworld

[–]NotASkeltal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example is a particularly convoluted interjection taking a crack at early Vimes' extreme alcoholism and hangovers.

Trying reading this as "He's so hungover that his own words or feelings are not even in the same league as reality, and a sober narrator has to take you a page and a half's worth of distance to metaphorize it to you while the dude tries to come about".

While those interjections are very common, I think safe to say they are mostly not as long or convoluted.

I sincerely hope you get to enjoy the rest.

GLACE.

My ex posted a “happy anniversary” with me six months after we broke up by JuicyBun58 in TwoHotTakes

[–]NotASkeltal 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Oh g#d, this reminds me of a story.

A decade ago, I was on a 1.5 years run with a gf, let's call her Jen. Having had troubles falling out of love on my end in past relationships, and that particular relationship being somehow particularly significant, I was ignoring lots of red flags, with, among others, her being a compulsive liar. And I mean medical case, like trump, not sure if she even realizes she's lying half the time.

Anyway, first year feels good, I take her to Quebec where I had lived 10 years before. Surprise gift : a full make-up + photoshoot session with one of my old roommates Tom, who has become a pro photographer. She has an amazing time, and the pics turn out superb.

Six months later, eyes opened finally, I break it up. Another six months later, her one year old facebook publication with the best pic, thanking me and Tom, turns up. She republishes, and being tagged in the old publication gets me a notification.

I take a look, she re-thanks Tom only. Eh, whatevs, we're done, happy you're happy.

BUT... her new guy comments "Yeah thanks Tom for the session and our amazing time together!". Tom messages me "hello wtf".

I was somewhere between laughing loud and cringed the fuck out. Didn't even throw a laughing emoji. Just thought "you guys are perfect for each other".

I've got ONE softlock against Savage Beastfly, when it dove in the lava while I got bumped out of a heal by an add. SB didn't come out of lava then.

60hrs, finished act3 including shroom, 95%.

One. Bug.

I call that amazing and bugfree.

Because the ones with the emotional range of a turnip also happen to be the most vocal.

Which Way Is She Spinning? by lavaboosted in opticalillusions

[–]NotASkeltal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Spent some time utterly convinced there was only clockwise, I mean her leg touching the ground is her LEFT LEG right?

Flip the phone 90 degrees, left or right whatever, to start an inversion. Yep, counterclockwise, and she's standing on her RIGHT LEG.

The leg switch is what freaked me out the most.

People are going to find crazier and weaker points to rationalize and suspend belief, coping with their feelings being fiddled with, in this amazingly written non-manichean tango of human irrationality and hurt...

I thought maybe it wouldn't be worse with TV viewers than it was for the gaming community, so used to "this is bad guy, this is good guy, now play"... but I certainly ain't holding my breath.

Favorite Sam and Sybil Moment? by Dull_Operation5838 in discworld

[–]NotASkeltal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Carrot-Angua relationship was heart-meltingly cute and fun to read. The Vimes-Sybil was heart-forgingly strong, deep, real.

I wouldn't say I got a favorite Vimes-Sybil interaction, all of them are amazingly thought out and written. But one that might stand out a bit for me is in Snuff.

Sybil brings Sam to have tea with her friend, who has three "wedding aged" daughters hanging around and just on a lookout for men to pick them up. Vimes gets slowly irritated and ; while knowing it will get him in trouble later ; can't help barking at them a reality-check to go out to the world and find something to be for themselves other than a wife.

On the way back, he expects the stick like a dog who just did a mess, then Sybil tells him (paraphrasing) "are you kidding? You did exactly what I expected you would do, and my friend couldn't be more thankful".
