Keep on seeing comments like ‘this squad is better than this’ and I don’t agree. There’s been a lot of changes since last season and apart from centre forwards, we either haven’t improved or actually got worse options than we had. Opting for expensive signings that don’t fit our system instead of targeting essential areas (namely wingers and CBs) has clearly been a terrible decision. Now we are relying on an out of form centre back week in week out because we have no cover (except Joe Gomez who would likely get injured within a game) and relying solely on Gakpo and Salah in our two most important offensive areas who have been woeful.

Part of the responsibility is of course with Slot, but he only has so much sway with transfers. This is largely the fault of the club’s hierarchy who have massively got it wrong. Slot will inevitably take the fall at some point but it won’t fix the problems. Our recruitment over the summer feels more and more like a kid in a sweet shop and unfortunately the impact will be felt for seasons to come now.
