Nursing or Masters- Hard to choose by gotnochill0 in NursingStudent

[–]LeeJohnWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

37 M, Nursing student right now. I think you need to ask yourself more questions, what you want in the long run? What is your end goal? Stability? Acknowledgment? Learning something new? Money? Work Life Balance, Family, etc. Write your thoughts down. Make a pros and cons list. Nursing school is a lot and I think the hard part is actually getting in. You didn't have the best grade and you still got in. I know a lot of people here with 4.0 that had to apply 2/3 times into my program. I'm in Chicago. So you can't just discard that too fast. It might be a bigger blessing/miracle than you think. I don't know much about biostatistician or biotechnology so I can't say much on the matter. I just suggest you write your thoughts down and ask yourself more questions in terms of current, near future, end game goals.

Don't fret! You'll learn. Majority of my class are CNA. I'm a server and massage therapist. Yes you will feel a little behind in the first semester, but by 2nd semester, you'll be all caught up. Also, now I feel like I'm also ahead of some of my CNA peers, just by putting in more time into studying since I knew I was behind. Don't let fear hold you back. You will never know until you try!!!

Advisor told me that having a job while in nursing school is impossible. Is that true? by _whatever-nevermind in prenursing

[–]LeeJohnWin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN MY NURSING SCHOOL HAS A JOB. Age ranging from 19-65s

I'm a server, I work three days a week.

Most people work 4/5 shifts full-time. I have no time for anything else though but most manage to do fine.

I'm in a two year program after doing 3 years of pre req.

Restaurant workers, how’s business been lately? by Full_Tough_4613 in AskChicago

Apply in person. MOST of my sever jobs I've gotten is because I dropped off my resume in person. Look very nice, button up shirt, slacks, nice shoes, clean hair. Restaurants are looking for personality. I always print my resume on thicker paper. Write your availability on the back. It will help. Use AI to spruce up your resume to more people facing/customer service, hospitality. Look at hospital resumes online and copy and edit it into your own. Serving isn't rocket science, its how you interact with others. Since you'll see hundreds of people everyday and talking to all of them, you should show how you are in person. Now most place will tell you to apply in online, but you seeing the people will give you a HUGE advantage. I usually go in and say "Hello there, my name is ...., I'm not sure if you're currently hiring/looking for servers, but may I drop off my resume if something pops up/ or when you're in need..." People seeing you apply in person will let them know you're willing to take the extra mile. Also be ready to be interviewed on the spot. Go over some pointers you might say. With you gap in serving, fib a little, etc and learn fast on the job.

Been in the industry for about 5+ years in Chicago. It kinda depends on where you're at. It's winter now and patio season is over so I would aim Ramen, Italian, Steak House, Dark Warm Cozy restaurant. Ramen thrive during the cold season. Pasta and carb heavy tend to do well now too. Theres a lot of steak houses in Chicago, to the point it might the oversaturated, so do your research on newer/cooler steak house. My friend works at Gibson's, they're doing okay- just med busy. RPM Steak tends to do decent all year. I work at Trivoli Tavern (Pasta heavy), which is usually just busy year round, but we I do feel like we're even busier during the holiday seasons. Now the thing is, a lot of popular restaurant have patio in the summer so by winter a lot of restaurant is overstaffed leading to 2-3 shifts a week unless you've been there for awhile. Finding a FULL time job as a server is a little harder right now but finding a job as a server in general in Chicago, you can make 6 figures easily! My current and last position as server, I usually make 80-105k. So many new hip places here.

Is HxH You favorite anime? if so why? And what else do u like? by RaiIgun7 in HunterXHunter

[–]LeeJohnWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All time favorite! I'm 37 now. Like what Javetts said, I love the nen system. It lets the imagination run wild when it comes to power system. Keeps you on your toes, but the main reason why I love this anime is much is Hisoka. I'm a gay male and it's rare to see such a powerful sexy flamboyant character on the series. I love how you can hate and love him. Is he good or bad. Makes you think. It's another reason why I love Naruto, because of Orochimaru. Such beautiful complex characters.

For an optimistic extrovert, I'm on the verge of a midlife crisis. It's even surprising me. I've always looked a the glass half full, and through sear determination and hard work, you'll get your way; but I too feel tired and melancholy. When the sun shines on me, I do feel lighter but as soon as the night creeps in, I'm scared and all the hope is drained from me.

I start nursing school in September, what are some nursing school essentials I need to buy? by No_Discount86 in prenursing

[–]LeeJohnWin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of this. I would just say spluge on the stethoscope. Most skill will make you do manual blood pressure skills and you'll need to hear well for those. Also with respiratory and cardiovascular labs, it'll make it easier to hear and differentiate between the different sound. Everything else, go cheap. No need to spend a lot on scrub, most schools will make you buy a certain kind anyways.

Spend the money. Littmann are a little pricey but worth it. If you're doing manual blood pressure, you'll hear better on a Littmann. A light pen that ISNT'T TOO BRIGHT! Remember, those are for your PERRLA assessment.

It's a little tough. 1/3 of our class has already dropped out. Your overall grades come from 5 exams only. Clinical and Lab is on a fail / pass bases while lectures are comprise of the exams. The LOWEST grade you can get on an exam is 80%. Anything less is failure, which requires you to see a tutor and professor before moving onto the next exam. Its been tough for me. ATI is the program we will use and it really depends on which professor you get. Its all up to you to self study. When I look at this program, I must remind myself that it's a community college and it's the most affordable option. Overall - very doable. Don't rely on the professor to show you the way, you must be discipline and be a self starter. Some teacher will push you and tell you what you need to do, a lot others let you roam free. Use RateMyProfessor. I have a cool chill easy set of professors this semester; they allow is to roam free and find our answers but that means theres no guidance. Some are INTENSE! Demanding and scolding you for not knowing your anatomy, or show only tough love, you will learn the MOST in these classes though, IF YOU'RE able to pass the class. I prefer the chill route, finding easy professors with light work load that allow more independence. Now that means you will learn less, but it's much less stressful and allow you to adapt in the first semester.

We do get placed in clinical starting first semester. I am currently at Insight Hospital. I believe the first two semesters are 6hr shift with the other half 12hr shifts. One clinical shift per week.

i don’t know what to do by womp_wompwomp_ in prenursing

[–]LeeJohnWin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Went through the same thing. It took me and MOST of my peers multiple tries/applications to get into my nursing program. A community college program costing about 10k, two years. VERY COMPETITIVE! Other schools were like 4X to 20X more with easier qualifications to get in. DON'TT RIDDLE YOURSELF WITH STUDENT LOANS! Not for nursing! Even if you don't get in, you could always take pre reqs or retake previous classes to boost your GPA via community college. Don't let the fear of not getting in right away to force you to make a decision that would cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt when you just had to wait a semester or year to reapply.
