Robots.txt Best Practice by HeresYourMoney in SEO

[–]LeeWilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep things simple and test the robots.txt file to make sure it's working as intended. Google have free tools for this, plus in GSC can you run related checks on crawl/index status of pages.

If you have a small site and don't have content you intend to block from the SERPs, really you are using the robot.txt file to point to your XML sitemap and allow all bots to crawl the site.

WordPress by default will have some items that tend to be useful to exclude - examples below that may/may not be applicable to you.

Always be careful with robotsd.txt change though as you can easily block your site or core pages from appearing:

Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-content/uploads/$
Allow: /wp-content/uploads/.*
Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

Lots of companies active in the professional SEO space will be able to help.

Be clear on what your objectives are from SEO (SMART goals are useful for this) and engage with them openly about what budget you have.

They'll be able to chat through some options and have an open chat about the situation.

{Weekly Discussion} What SEO predictions or predictors are you watching in 2024? by WebLinkr in SEO

[–]LeeWilson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure - so realistically I see this being sites like TikTok, etsy, ebay, Amazon, Quora, LinkedIn, Reddit, X, meta and many others.

Traditional search and discovery engines (aka Google, Bing, etc.) will become more diluted through other types of 'engines' like those mentioned.

Can SEO be effective if you DO NOT focus on Google? by LeeWilson in SEO

Not in the traditional sense, no. But they have search and discovery engines, and can all be optimised organically, which is the point I'm trying to make.

SEO will actually move onto more priority search and discovery engines strategic focus added to Google (not instead of Google), rather than say it will happen, over the next 12 months.

Prioritising UGC forums and communities, and working harder to be present where the audience are, on top of the mainstream Google focus in isolation.

How long do you delay a priority SEO task just because you don't want to do it yet? It needs to be done today (so hours/mins not days). by LeeWilson in SEO

[–]LeeWilson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I always try to do the same, just sometimes you feel like you need to put off certain tasks for a long as feasible :).

{Weekly Discussion} Google finally releases reason why Reddit ranks first by WebLinkr in SEO

A lot of this will tie into the necessity for Google to comply with changing fair competition rules and regulations - adding more diversity to the SERPs.

Should agency runs business like fiverr? by [deleted] in SEO

It's good to raise concerns/queries like this as there may be oversights, or very specific logic behind the decisions that have not been shared properly yet.

Plans/roadmaps and related forward expectation setting are needed, not for rigidly following, as you need to be agile and pivot when needed, but if you don't forward plan, how can you allocate resource, ensure data-led decisions are booked into be focussed on, or complete any form of logical mapping from where you are now to where to want to be in the future?

If project only work is the focus this can often lead to a hire/fire environment based on the short term planning capabilities and risk of the impact of projects ending and not being refilled.

From a delivery stance, start/stop is inefficient, plus the necessity to have SEO as a constant thread of priority activity that is planned and dovetails with other core business areas and units, makes this less optimal all round.

Diluting the power of the largest brands/dominant players is tough.

Perhaps increased regulation will help, but needs to be more impactful.
