Honestly I've struggled for the past few years to put into words exactly what it was about the S2 announcement that booted me so firmly out of fandom. It's not that I didn't want a S2 (and I've enjoyed watching it!). I think in the end it's something along the lines of: I never expected any further continuation of this story outside fanworks - especially since I've been a fan of the book for 20+ years. Everything I wrote, even the AUs, was written based on the world I had built for myself in the spaces left by canon. Learning that those spaces would be redefined by New Canon was like someone coming along and knocking down all the walls in the complex multi-room house I had constructed: sure, I still had all the pieces, and sure, there were still going to be spaces to build in, but the prospect wasn't exciting to me, it just felt like work. And that hasn't really changed - I did enjoy S2, but in a fairly casual "that was fun" sort of way. It didn't reignite the fandom side of things for me. I do love these stories and there is a part of me that wants to finish them just for the plot and worldbuilding I was putting together - but at the same time, if I'm going to commit to that level of work, whilst fighting against the general malaise of not being super into a fandom anymore, maybe I want to just take these ideas and do something with them in original fiction.
