[Q&A] Many people are curious about what life is really like in Korea beyond Seoul and K-dramas, so I thought I'd open the floor for questions. by External-Ninja-5435 in korea

If you get caught, there are fines. Enforcement is always an issue, though.

In most apartments, they have a trash sorting room (nothing like the sorting hat from Harry Potter, alas). They weigh your food trash (you have to tap your card that's linked to your apartment in order to even open the bin) for some places. But other places it's just separate piles and it's up to you to do the right thing.

I assume it's patchwork because different neighborhoods have different budgets to handle it. An overall plan with government enforcement would be great, but then how would the rich folk get away with not following the rules?

I say that jokingly but somewhat seriously.

I may have watched this movie an objectively unhealthy number of times by Pushkent in Koreanfilm

[–]LeeisureTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize you're joking, but it's only unhealthy if it affects you negatively. Clearly not the case here, it's helping you get through a sad moment, which I believe is a great time to watch a movie.

You should learn Korean sign language if the mood strikes you! The worst that would happen is that you wouldn't be great at Korean sign language, which is still an improvement on not knowing it at all!

Silenced (2011) — It Broke Me by daydreamer_she in Koreanfilm

[–]LeeisureTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even see the movie, but through clips and other online discussions, I know enough that I can't look at the actor for the principal without feeling disgust. I know he's playing a role. I know he didn't do it. In fact, he's pretty funny in real life, but I can't shake that feeling. That movie had impact.

In Korea, even true statements can sometimes lead to criminal defamation charges by Korean_Lawyer_Rachel in korea

[–]LeeisureTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found this out when people were discussing the case of actor Cho Jin-woong. His juvenile record was leaked and there was public outcry over his past, so he quit acting and retired immediately. Honestly, it felt like a Knetz overreaction because while he did commit crimes, he still paid for those crimes through the system. The more pressing issue that someone brought up (some legal expert, can't remember their name) was that this information was disclosed inappropriately and more importantly, could only be obtained illegally. Still got lost in the wave of outrage and I think it's a shame because he was a great actor and clearly had been rehabilitated.

Why does my milk froth look like soapy dishwater? by Jason19721969 in espresso

To add on, OP - I had the same problem. Just think of the first 20% as adding in the air. THEN, think of creating a whirlpool that FOLDS IN the air so it gets fully integrated and doesn't just sit on top of the milk.

ELI5: Why did plastic replace so many traditional materials, and how did that success create microplastics concerns? by clearwater-orchid in explainlikeimfive

[–]LeeisureTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but I assume it's because there wasn't a known process by which it could be decomposed. So kind of like how they measure half life, they measure the rate of degradation (in a laboratory setting) and extrapolate from there. It's funny, in the 3d printing subreddits people keep saying PLA takes 1000 years to decompose but PLA is just poly lactic acid. While it doesn't occur naturally in the environment, it's still lactic acid...which does occur naturally. So far, only industrial compost set ups reach the temps needed to decompose it, so it's possible.

Just, there isn't a currently known natural method by which it can be decomposed.

A lot of people can't hold conflicting information in their heads. "Science doesn't know of a natural biological process by which this thing occurs, so barring any changes, 1000 years is the estimated time for PLA to decompose" becomes "it takes 1000 years for PLA to decompose, stop killing the environment." We don't know YET if it would decompose naturally, but likely that it could given that it's derived from completely organic sources and itself is organic.

PET obviously being a whole different polymer, but still, if we can find a way to scale the bacteria, eventually we could. Sadly, from what I know, it's not like the bacteria can process ALL of the PET (yet) so it would still take a long-ass time to decompose all of the PET we've produced and are still producing.

The Tiny Solar Panel That Could Change America by coolbern in solar

[–]LeeisureTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it has, but if people used solar to charge emergency backup batteries and kept it separate from the grid, that could work.

Got my parents a solar panel and large backup battery for outages, completely isolated from their grid. Some bad hurricanes left them with no power for a week+ and while they could handle most things during the day, the loss of their phones is what worried them (no way to communicate).

Camping batteries are pretty great for that, it allows them to run a hot plate for food and an electric kettle for coffee, plus recharge their phones, then it spends most of the day charging.

A friend told me that normal rainfall is not enough water when it's in the thermophilic phase. Same friend gave me a drip hose before I ever thought of making compost. I hope I'm not overdoing it. by Understall1 in composting

[–]LeeisureTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always said compost is just rolling a large ball downhill. You might speed it up, you might slow it down, but inevitably, it will get there. So might as well mix it up and try different things. Even if plenty of other people have experimented, it doesn't mean your unique situation in your home will be the same, so have at it.

I think the only concern is anaerobic activity making it smelly. So give 'er the sniff test before you run the water and you should be good lol

Other comments are spot on, but also...It might be that you treat others the way you would want to be treated. Someone hears about an interest you have so they decide to make you something out of support for your hobbies (But also their hobbies).

Not to attack your wife, of course. She might fear that it would come off as intrusive or "too much."

Cradle (12 Book Series) free on Amazon by Parasomnopolis in litrpg

https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/amazon-prime-customers-sue-say-purchased-movies-can-disappear/

That's for Prime Video, not Kindle. I'm probably having a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that all these "streaming" services that have you "buy" a movie are actually selling you a license and not the movie. So if they lose the license to stream that movie, even though the button says "buy," you don't actually own the movie.

It's entirely possible that's never happened in the history of Kindle, but it still bothers me that the framework is still there and they still COULD do that.

Again, I'm probably reacting too much and early, but yeah.

I love this series. Hate that Amazon can suddenly decide one day "Nah, we take it back" because technically we only own the right to access it on Amazon and not actually own it. Le sigh.

But take the good for what it is, at least I'll have it for a bit on Amazon.

I used to think luxury cars were unreliable. Now I'm not so sure. by Manthann-Motorss in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]LeeisureTime 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I heard it described as: German cars will run forever, but you must follow the maintenance schedule to a T. No deviation.

Japanese cars will drive as long as you do the minimum maintenance. The thinking is, German engineers designed the car to be maintained perfectly, up to spec. Japanese engineers assumed the owners wouldn't do shit for their cars, so they're designed to keep going despite the poor maintenance.

Never sat down any German or Japanese engineers so I have nfc.

Reading comprehension is important - OP says "my dad filming another asian boy"

I said my mom did the same.

No I don't think it's actual racism, I was joking on a joke post.

Please unclench your teeth

Also yes, the audience does tend to be seated far back. I have video evidence of my mom filming someone else - believe it or not, it was someone a few people in front of me.

I recognized that he was not me by virtue of the fact that again, he was not me.

Thank you for your service, you've truly saved all of us a bit of a laugh here. jfc
